The trivia seasons for My Trivia Live and Sporcle Live began in early August, 2018. You know what Scottish poet Robert Burns said about the best laid plans in his poem To A Mouse, right?
But Mousie, thou art no thy-lane,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men
Gang aft agley,
An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!
In regular English, this basically means the best laid plans often go…askew, or awry. Which is exactly what happened with my trivia team this season! We had “planned” to play a third season at Powell’s Pub, where we’d previously qualified two consecutive seasons for semifinals, but stopped after four games. We planned to play the minimum games at Oscar’s, but…only played one game. We played eight games at Original Gravity, but only reported scores to the league for four of those games.
We certainly didn’t stop playing trivia games! I actually kept very, very meticulous records this past season. We played a total of 23 times since Aug. 6 in nine different trivia spots winning a total of $335 in prize money. This averages to just under $15 per night with 1-3 players on average per night. We only played six times in the MTL league, the rest of the games were Sporcle Live games. Our biggest prize winning night was Sept. 26 at Haymaker ($50), followed by Tower Inn on Oct. 16 ($40). Our highest-scoring night of the season was 153 points at Corner Brewery on Oct. 31 (we had a very favorable question set that was almost ALL about Halloween related things).
We were largely “commitment phobic” this entire season when it came to finding “regular” trivia spots! Original Gravity was our most “regular” spot with eight total visits, but I still didn’t want to go “all in” there for tournament purposes this time. I’m honestly not sure if it was the “right” thing to do or not. Who can tell? What’s done is done. Whichever team winds up winning the finals spot Thursday, Nov. 15 won’t have to beat MY team this time! And I’ve already said which team I want to win the spot…
Good news is we FINALLY found a trivia spot we want to “commit” to! We very shyly asked Tower Inn in Ypsilanti last Tuesday if they wanted to “go steady” with us…and (squeal) they said “Yes!” You have any idea how painful it was for me to get up the nerve to ask? It was like that one time in high school when I asked that cute boy I liked if he wanted to…(and I am SO not going to finish this sentence – this is one secret I’m not going to share in this blog…well, one of MANY). I’m going to let Leela from Futurama provide a nice distraction from this painful memory in a scene from the episode called The Day the Earth Stood Stupid (everyone but Fry became very, very dumb):
Leela from Futurama shyly flirts with Queequeg from Moby Dick. I can do a pretty decent imitation of Katey Sagal’s voice!
I know, I know… I’m being completely silly here…but I just felt like Tower Inn was the “right” spot the last time we played there. The night works out well for at least 2-3 of us, the drinks prices are decent, and the proximity to the Eastern Michigan University campus gives the place a nice “energy.” Not to mention plenty of “fresh meat” for us to chew on (LOL) – and a decent shot at winning prizes. Best part is it’s very, very close to home! This will be especially important in the upcoming winter months.
That’s about it for this trivia update. Thanks, as always, for reading! I’ll see YOU in the next recap on Wednesday afternoon!
