Editor’s Note: This is a recap written by a rival trivia team from 2016. Enjoy!
We took our “Core 4” to The Bowery Grille & Pub on Tuesday to play some Sporcle and Shine with Emily. This season has been a little weird so far, with many questions landing right in our wheelhouse, but a few others falling FAR from it. Thanks to Brian Williams Reporting Live for the question set.
1. Sandwiches: The sandwich known as a BELT is just like a BLT with what additional ingredient?
2. Classic Toys: Now mostly used as a children’s toy, what trademark device was first introduced in 1939 along with cardboard disks containing stereoscopic images to look at and click through?
3. Autobiographies: With a title similar to his best selling 1977 album, what rock singer named his autobiography To Hell and Back?
4. European Cities: At over twice the size of the next largest city, what is the most populous city in the nation of Switzerland?
– Had it narrowed down to the top 2, unfortunately we picked #2.
5. Dance: What popular dance style of the 1920s was named after a port city in South Carolina?
6. Same Role: What title movie role was played by Eddie Murphy in 1998 and Rex Harrison in 1967?
7. NBA: Which Indiana Pacers player did Detroit Piston fan John Green hit with a cup during a 2004 game, infamously sparking a melee (known as the Malice at the Palace)?
8. Science: What organic compound is a component of the tough cell walls of green plants and makes up much of cotton fiber and wood?
9. Comic Book Villains: Which DC Comics supervillain is a zombie named for a nursery rhyme character that was “born on Monday and died on Sunday?”
– Nope.
10. Reality TV: Before making appearances on other reality TV shows, Adrianne Curry was the first winner of which reality competition series in 2003?
Bonus: Within two, how many seasons of the show aired in the 12 ½ years that it aired?
– Got the main question, not even close on the bonus.
Mystery Round: Movie Crosswords – All movies are one word titles beginning with the letter G
1. 6 letters – A musical film containing the song “Summer Nights”
2. 7 letters – A box office bomb starring Mariah Carey
3. 5 letters – A Civil War film starring Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman
4. 7 letters – A supernatural horror movie starring Halle Berry as a psychiatrist at a women’s mental hospital
Got them all.
Heading into the final:
MBLP was in second place, 4 points back from “Pure Flint” (I think this was The Aristocrats) who were riding a perfect game.
Final Category: US Presidents
Final Questions: Which two US presidents died at the youngest ages, dying approximately 82 years apart?
Got it, but so did Pure Flint. Second place for MBLP.
Game Two
1. Rivers: What river forms most of the border between California and Arizona before entering Mexico?
2. Garbage: What are the three R’s of waste management?
3. 2000s Movies: The most expensive comedy film ever made at the time, what 2007 movie is a modern day retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark? Bonus: who played the title role?
4. Cars: What do the letters KBB stand for in terms of what a person might consult to determine the value of an automobile?
5. Coaches: Which school did current Alabama head coach Nick Saban lead to the NCAA championship immediately before leaving to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins?
6. TV Characters: Which TV character gave birth to a son she named Jerry Garcia after the Grateful Dead guitarist?
7. Classical Music: A piece of music from which Rossini opera would later be used as the theme song for The Lone Ranger?
– This was a substituted question in Toledo for the audio clue. We had the audio of the song referenced in the question.
8. Literary Animals: In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, what kind of animal are Napoleon and Snowball?
9. Theaters: What is the nine letter term that refers to the lowest balcony in a theater?
10. Advertising: According to their ad campaigns, which car rental company wants to “put you in the driver’s seat?”
– Our only miss of the round, for 2pt.
Visual: Missed #2. We went with the other state capital close to NYC.
Heading into the final:
We were AGAIN in 2nd place, 3 points behind a team that evidently was 1pt off of a perfect game.
Final Category: Draft Picks
Final Question: Since Patrick Ewing was drafted in 1985, only four of the #1 overall picks in the NBA draft have also won an NCAA championship. Name one of the four.
Unfortunately, of the “Big 4” professional sports, the NBA is our weakest. Our sports guy named one of the players, but went with his college teammate instead. This left us in 4th for the night. It’s tough to catch a team that has a perfect or near perfect game. I guess we need to start getting some more questions right. Oh well, it’s a long season. We’ll get our act together soon enough. Until then, we’ll just be over here, crying in our beers.
