Trivia Recap – June 10, 2018 – Oscar’s Sports and Grill

We’ve been kind of attempting to “divide and conquer” in our trivia efforts this season in two different trivia leagues – Sporcle Live – and My Trivia Live. With us having only four “regular” players (and one of them being on a trivia break right now), it’s been a challenge! Two of us (and occasionally three of us) have been going out to our Monday and Thursday games, and when Saturday games are possible, we either have one player – or one player plus a “loaner” from another team going out for those games. In Saturday’s game at Oscar’s Sports & Grill, only one player was willing/able to go out…which was me! I wound up finishing second overall for the night with 94 points, just barely missed out on prizes in both games by finishing third. It was kind of frustrating narrowly missing out on prizes in both games, but I was more relieved than anything else that I was able to do THAT well by wagering zero on both final questions! Only one team each game managed to get the finals correct (not the same team both games). It wasn’t just the final questions that were a bit…rough, either! Read on to see what some of the other questions were that wound up stumping every team in the bar…
Game One
1. Taglines – What NBC series airing from 2006 to 2010 used the tagline “Save the Cheerleader?” Nope, miss for 2.
2. Logos – What color in the rainbow did NOT appear in the Apple logo that was used from 1977 to 1998? Every team missed this, I missed for 3.
3. Country Names – What is the only country whose long and short form name has the letters BY used consecutively? I should NOT have had to blow my 1 pointer on this one, but I misheard the question and thought the letters were PY, not BY! After this question, I wound up moving farther down the bar toward the door. Strange acoustics at Oscar’s – move farther AWAY from the speaker and you wind up hearing the questions better (don’t ask me to explain it but it worked)…Grrr…should have been able to use my 10 pointer on this one! Oh well…(NEVER sit at the bar spot closest to the kitchen again…check!)
4. Plays – George Gibbs and Emily Webb are characters in what 1938 Thornton Wilder play? 10
5. The Human Body – Maxillary, sphenoid, frontal and ethmoid are all names for what spaces in the human body? 9
6. College Colors – What Ohio school’s FBS football team is the only one to use the colors brown and orange in their uniforms? Got this correct on a guess for 4 (yes I was really excited about that…almost made up for not hearing that countries question correctly)!
7. Occupations – Name one of the two countries – besides Germany, Austria, Italy and Japan to have had occupations by U.S. military forces after World War 2 and before the Korean War? Miss for 5, only one team managed to get this one correct.
8. Film Deaths (I was excited when I heard this as a category – really I was…) – In what 1999 film does a character named Lester Burnham die after getting shot in the face? For an extra “nerd” bonus point, who directed this film? 8 plus the bonus.
americanbeauty
I actually really enjoyed this movie, even if the male star is now part of the blacklisted “Me Too” camp…This movie pretty much nailed the mid-life crisis.
9. Song Questions – Audio clue of an REM song with a four-word question that is also a title, got for 7.
10. Arcades – In arcade game would you find bumpers, flippers and plungers? A “yay I’m old” question….yay! 6
Mystery – North or South? Given the names of the following Italian cities, identify whether they are north – or south – of Rome.
Yikes! For this round, I borrowed a quarter from fellow trivia “soloist” Michael B., who was sitting a couple of seats down from me at the bar. There is a certain “camaraderie” that develops among the solo trivia players sitting at the bar (handing in slips for each other, sharing misery of getting questions wrong, etc.), but the competition is always there! Poor Mike said he missed the “human body” question, I said, “Well, I missed the countries one, don’t feel too bad.” As for this mystery round.. I really know NOTHING about Italian geography, and I figured giving in to the probability “gods” would probably serve me best in figuring out the answers…This is not the first time I’ve used coin tosses and die rolls in trivia games!
1. Naples
2. Palermo
3. Pisa
4. Turin
Managed to get #1 correct, so two points! Uh, yay? Go quarter power? Sigh…rough mystery round!
Scores – Thirteen teams, scores 18 to 62, with One is the Loneliest Number in first. I was in fourth with 50 points using the name “Sorry…I was imagining Whore Island.”
sorrywhoreisland
When Archer’s mother scolds him for gallivanting around on “Whore Island,” Archer starts daydreaming a bit…”Whore Island” was actually referenced much earlier in the 2004 film Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, when Ron tells Veronica to “Go back to your home on Whore Island.”
Final Category – Music Records
I had ZERO confidence in this category, so guess what I wagered?
What artist holds the record for the longest span of time between #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, at nearly 25 years?
One team got this one correct…unsure which team it was. But One is the Loneliest Number finished second with 52 points, and I wound up in third with 50 points.
Game Two
1. Pie – French silk pie is traditionally what flavor? 4
2. Star Trek – What is the first officer’s name on “Star Trek: The Next Generation?” FB clue, 10
3. Populations – After Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, name one of the next two most populous cities in Pennsylvania, name two for an additional “nerd” bonus point. Got one, but not both for 3.
4. Monopoly – Of the eight Monopoly board spots which cannot be purchased, which one falls last alphabetically? 2
5. Animated Movies – What 2011 animated film was the most recent non-Disney and non-Pixar film to have received the Oscar for best animated feature? 6
6. British Politics – Name the two political parties holding the most seats in the House of Commons. I can name exactly two British political parties, thankfully they were the two I needed, I got ballsy here and went 7. Getting ballsy on wagering won’t do me any favors in the next question!
7. Twitter – After Donald Trump, the world leader of which country has the most followers on Twitter? No teams got this correct, I missed for 9!
trudeau
(Conversation with my own mind after getting this question wrong): “Just because the leader of this country is…kinda cute and has a fondness for wearing novelty dress socks, it doesn’t mean he has THAT many Twitter followers.” He did just hit 3 million followers!

Side note, the prime minister of the correct country reportedly has a lot of “fake” Twitter followers (one article says about 60 percent of their followers are fake). I just don’t “get” Twitter. I have a Twitter account for the trivia team, but I honestly don’t know how to use it! I guess it might be fun as a “spectator” sport for seeing the dumb things that celebrities and politicians post, so… maybe “trainwreck” appeal? I honestly don’t know!

8. Children’s Books – In the Beatrix Potter book The Tale of Timmy Tip Toes, what type of animal is Timmy? Squirrel, rabbit, deer or skunk? Miss for 5.
9. Pitchers – (do I still have my 1 point slip…yes I do!) Who was the most recent MLB pitcher to have had 300 career wins, accomplishing this feat in 2009 while playing for the San Francisco Giants? Miss for 1.
10. Instrumentals – What saxophonist had a Billboard hit in 1987 with the single “Songbird?” 6

Missed #3.
Scores: Nine teams, scores 29 to 57, with “More Water, Please” in first. I was in sixth with 44 points.
Final Category – Wrestling
In 2016, who joined Hulk Hogan as the only wrestler to headline the main event at Wrestlemania at least seven times?
Wagered zero.
I was packing up my notes when the final scores were read, so all I know is I finished third for that round, unsure who got first/second (different people than in game one). Ah, Let’s Get It got first, do not know who got second.
That’s it for now! Next game is Monday, so look for the next recap on Tuesday afternoon. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Justin Trudeau (pssst..I LOVE men’s novelty socks)!
