Trivia Recap – June 3, 2018 – Oscar’s Sports and Grill

It was the trivia night that wasn’t supposed to happen! Saturday afternoon, a group of four ‘Pods met up at 734 Brewing Company in Ypsilanti’s Depot Town for its opening around 4 p.m.

When getting a “flight” of beers, it’s essential to get one of each color (LOL)! This flight includes a (from left to right) stout, amber ale, raspberry cream ale, and regular cream ale.

The plan was for us all to get together on a rare pleasant summer afternoon, have some beers at a new “joint” and just shoot the breeze…IN the breeze, as it were (the outdoor beer garden was nice on a pleasant day, but might not be as nice on a 90-plus degree day in full sun). And then, as people who drink enough beer often do, they started…talking. “How about doing a camp fire at my house tonight?” So it was settled, Mike and Brad would meet at Brad’s later for a camp fire, and I would be the D.D., driving Mike to the fire around 8:30 and picking him up later. I wasn’t really in the mood to hang around a fire anyway, and I actually WANTED to sober up! It was the responsible thing to do, right? So after Mike and I had some dinner at Aubree’s and walked home, we took a brief pit stop, then I dropped Mike off at Brad’s, and headed out to Saline for a Sporcle Live Trivia game at Oscar’s Sports & Grill, hoping to catch at least a bit of game one (which I did). I made it just in time for the mystery round and the final question.
As for this recap? I am going to put the regular round questions for GAME TWO first, then put all of the mystery rounds/final questions together, but I only played one regular round of questions. Are we clear? Good! The score I figured for myself does not match what has been reported to the league, unless I did something really, really wrong, it should be 61 total points for the night, not 49 points as it shows on the bar’s score page. I have e-mailed the league about this, so maybe it will get fixed soon (I’m really not THAT worried about it, I just wanted to get credit for playing on this night). I may not have been able to wager more points than I had in the round, so I guess I’ll see what the league “brass” has to say! All of that said, let’s get on with it, shall we?
Game Two (Regular Round)
1. Disney Movies – In the 1951 Disney film “Alice in Wonderland,” what kind of celebration are the Mad Hatter, March Hare and Dormouse celebrating? For a “nerd” bonus point, who wrote the book on which this film was based? Got the bonus, but missed for 2. Mike would have been all over this one. When I read the question to him later, he not only revealed the correct answer right away, but started SINGING it (really was kind of cute – you had to be there). Who says it isn’t entertaining being the designated driver?
2. Territories – What group of islands in the Caribbean is the southernmost of islands owned by the United States to not be located in the Pacific Ocean? Not confident, but got for 3 (I’m stronger at knowing the “sovereign” nations,” not territories).
3. Web Sites – The web site Chagg, founded in 2005, offers what products for temporary use? Miss for 4. Sporcle Live with Liz’s anecdote a couple of questions back about having a tattoo of a Jabberwocky on her back might have (not on purpose) led me to a different type of “thing” which also has a “temporary” version, lol! It was not a bad thing that I had “ink” on the brain, I just didn’t have the right “kind” of ink, as it were…
4. Stadiums – During its first season, the Carolina Panthers played their homes games at what ACC stadium? One team in the house got this one correct, I picked a stadium in the correct state at least…but missed this for 1. Would SURE like to use my 10 pointer sometime this game!!!!
5. Vice Presidents – Hannibal Hamlin served as vice president under which 19th century U.S. president? Yay I got to use my 10 point slip!

hannibalateam.jpg

U.S. Vice President Hannibal Hamlin is NOT to be confused with Hannibal Smith from “The A-Team.”

6. Board Games – According to its instructions, the game Racko only contains four racks and what else? I have never heard of this game, but seriously…these “games” questions have been KILLER lately! Missed this for 5.
7. Commercials – “Steve” from Stranger Things has appeared in advertisements for what pizza company? FB clue, 9.
8. Words – What English word for a multi-passenger vehicle has the same word in Spanish meaning “they go?” I almost wish the additional Spanish clue wasn’t given, this completely threw me off, because I was thinking of the right word. Oh well, the trials of playing by yourself! Miss for 6.
9. Musicals – In the lyrics to “The Music Man,” the band has 88 trombones and how many cornets close at hand? Wish this would have been “within 10,” because I GOT this answer correct within 10! Oy…maybe this is the game I should have showed up late to play, lol…
10. Nursery Rhymes – In “The Old Woman And The Shoe,” the old woman gives broth to her children but not what else? Good guess for an essential 8 points.
Mystery Round (GAME ONE)
Crosswords – Identify the words based on the following clues
1. Five letters – pirate plunder
2. Six letters – Catchy song used in advertising on TV, radio, etc.
3. Arena often covered and featuring games of skill, wild animals and clowns
4. Grey nocturnal carnivore with a bushy tail and black mask
Got all of these.
Game One Scores (Going into the final)
Thirteen teams, scores 8 to 64, with Better Late Than Never in first. I was bringing up the rear with 8, though Liz did not notice my sign up slip until game two, so my score was not actually read (we straightened this out by the end of game two…or so I thought…)
GAME ONE FINAL CATEGORY – Movie Casts
Wagered 20 on this, even though “movies” questions have been brutal lately…
The performer who played Bruce Willis’ partner on Moonlighting and the performer who played Raymond’s father on Everybody Loves Raymond appeared in what film for which Jodie Foster received an Oscar nomination?

Cybill Shepherd and future Avenger Robert Downey Jr. in the 1989 romantic comedy Chances Are, which is one of only a handful (if even THAT many) of rom-coms I actually like…

Got it…
Game One winners: One is the Loneliest Number, 74; better Late Than Never, 75.
GAME TWO MYSTERY ROUND –

visual62.jpg

My tablet was not cooperative enough to show this round to me in time, so I had to look at the host’s laptop for this one, which means I needed virtually every second to answer these. Only managed to get #1, lost out on #3 on a coin toss. And I didn’t get enough of a chance to look at #4 (she pretty much looks like any blonde female celebrity) to be able to nail her down.
Game Two Scores (Going into the final)
Ten teams, scores 29 to 56, with Let’s Get It in first. I was in eighth with 33 points.
Game Two Final Category – Politicians
Since John F. Kennedy served as a member of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate, there have been five other members of the Kennedy family elected to U.S. Congress, two of whom share the same first name. Give three of the four first names used by those reps.
This did NOT end up being our question, as a couple of players wound up being too loud during their answer discussions. So Liz threw out this question and asked this one instead (wagers were not allowed to be changed).
Final Category – Asian History
Name either category in which the “Great Leap Forward” occurred in Asian history?
I was one decade too early…but wagered zero.
Game Two Winners:
Baby O.J., 71; Let’s Get It, 75.
We’ll be back at it Monday at Powell’s Pub, so look for the next recap on Tuesday afternoon. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, the Queen of Hearts!
