The regular season is wrapping up this week in the My Trivia Live pub trivia league. We played our last game on Monday, and though our performance in the game wasn’t exactly stellar, we still got what we wanted! Because we finished first in the bar, we will battle for a “finals” spot in the Saturday, May 12 semifinals.
I still don’t really know all of the details, but it seems another team tried to stop us. I looked at the league scores going into Monday night’s game and they showed us to be in the lead. But after the game when I looked again, one score “mysteriously” showed up for our bar during a week the games were canceled for the NCAA basketball final. WTF? How could a team have logged a score during a week the game was canceled?

I questioned the host about it, and he didn’t really have any good answers, but said that another team probably tried using their “get out of jail card.” In this trivia league, this means that once per season, a team may miss a game at their regular bar and play another night to substitute the score from the other place. The thing is, you can’t do that if you miss a game because of a canceled game by the league.
I’m questioning whether this other team was trying to pull a fast one – or whether the other host was trying to pull a fast one. This team has been playing at least a couple of years, they were a team at Powell’s in 2016 when I started playing games there occasionally. I had a brief conversation with the other trivia host, who told me that one of the teams from Powell’s played her show on Tuesday. I specifically mentioned that our game was canceled that week. She has been a trivia host with this league almost three years, so I’d like to think she has a good grasp on the rules.
But then, it could have just been a perfect storm of incompetence/ignorance. Though I’m not ruling out the possibility of “foul play.” I have a “civil” relationship with the other host and have known her for a couple of years, but as of late, I don’t totally trust her. She might still be bitter that we quit playing one of her shows last December, and she and my husband don’t always get along. As for this other team, I can totally relate to doing whatever it takes to win in trivia – within the rules. But I can’t abide by doing whatever it takes to win by being sneaky/underhanded. Maybe that’s OK if you’re playing a D&D game and your character is evil aligned… speaking of evil, I’m thinking of doing a blog about my favorite movie villains, so stay tuned!
Long story short, the incident has been resolved. I sent an e-mail to one of the league brass, and she said she fixed it. She also thanked me for pointing that out. Had this gone unchecked, this other team would have wound up having a 15-point lead over us – without having earned it. This takes that game that we missed because it was canceled into account! If you really want to kick our asses in trivia, do it the old-fashioned way – by knowing more answers than we do! We won’t lose any respect for you if you do this!
A little update, the score popped up in the standings AGAIN after it was removed! So again, I emailed one of the league administrators, who fixed it again – AND said she would also talk to the trivia host who likely did this.
It all proves that NOTHING is ever easy for our trivia team! Anything we get, we have to fight for. That’s why our name is the “Miskatonic University Fighting Cephalopods!”
