I hit up the Sporcle Live trivia scene at Oscar’s Sports & Grill Saturday, joined by “loaner” Evan from a rival trivia team. We won a $10/second place prize in game one, thanks to a conservative wager on a tough question about bones, and came VERY close to a big win in game two! We were in first going into both finals, and teamed up very well on most of the questions. We would’ve needed help from a couple of teammates on the question we had about a “formicarium,” and the more “sciencey” people on my team might have helped with the game one final about bones. Otherwise, there were not too many misses for us in this game! And here are the questions…
Game One
1. Video Games – In what video game series does the protagonist encounter enemies including Chain Chomps, Hammer Brothers, and Bullet Bill? This is not exactly how the question was worded, some villain’s name beginning with the letter “P” was read by Sporcle Live with Liz, but I have no idea which one. I have “Pokies” in my notes…and am unsure if that’s even close to being a villain from this series (sorry, my video game knowledge is limited to Ms. Pac Man and Burgertime). I was so much of a video game addict in the mid 1980s that my eyeballs threatened a mutiny, which is why I stay away from video games now (this is a true story). Evan knew this one for 10.
2. Writing – A denouement describes the beginning, middle or end of a story? 9
3. Explorers – In 1778, British explorer James Cook became the first known person to make contact with the native people in what future U.S. state? I was a little worried about this category since I am usually so shitty in it, but this one was pretty easy, 8.
4. Movie Pairs – Name two of the movies starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks released in the 1990s. Name a third for an additional bonus point. Got all three for 7 plus the bonus.
5. Slogans – What U.S. state has used the slogans “We Love Dreamers,” “Pacific Wonderland,” and “Things Look Different Here?” Miss for 3.
6. Animals – What kind of animal is typically found in a formicarium? We were in the right ballpark with what type of animal was needed for this, but miss for 2. After the game, I read the questions to my husband Mike, and we joked about how a “fornicarium” would be defined, lol…
7. Boxing – Within four, in what year did the boxing match occur involving Mike Tyson biting Evander Holyfield’s ear? We were worried about this category, but we got it for 6. A couple of my friends watched this match pay-per-view at Theo’s, which is now The Wurst Bar.
8. Cookies – What French meringue-based cookie is typically served in pairs – and filled with jam, buttercream or ganache? Another descriptor was that it is usually made in many different flavors and colors. We had no idea. Miss for 1.
9. Song Lyrics – Audio clip of The Beach Boys song “California Girls,” had to fill in the missing two words – “The Midwest farmers’ daughters really make you (two words)? Being that I’m kind of a grammar Nazi, I asked whether one of the words in the lyrics was considered one or two words just to be sure! Evan kind of made fun of me for that…but hey…that’s perfectly all right!
10. Cartoons – What color was Yogi Bear’s tie and hat? 4
Mystery – Anagrams (this part excited me) – Primetime Emmy best supporting actress winners (this second part did NOT excite me). Identify the actresses based on the years they won the Emmy and the anagrams
1. 2000/2006 – Glum Manley
2. A Tin Onyx
3. Only Ninja Ales
4. Nickname Knot
Evan and I really worked hard on this. We not only tried to come up with actress names, but also the series that they would have won the Emmy for. And when Evan started brainstorming names from one of the series, we had a hit. I racked my brain trying to think of the name of the actress who played “that slutty woman on Sex and the City,” but thankfully she was not one of the names that we needed. We managed to get two of these correct. For an Emmy mystery round? That’ll do! 🙂
Scores – I did not catch all of the scores, but the top 10 ranged from 32 to 57, with Cthulhu 2020 – Why The Hell Not (aka ‘Pods) in first.
Final Category – Human Anatomy
We opted to go low on this one and only wagered seven points…glad we did.
In humans, the tarsus is a cluster of seven bones, including the three cuneiform bones, the cuboid bone, the talus bone, the navicular bone, and one other bone.
Give either the technical name of this seventh bone, or its common English name.
The word “tarsus” was an important clue to me on this one, but not enough of a clue to help us get this. Geez, what a night for us to not have ANY scientists playing with our team (go figure)! Murphy’s Law of trivia!
Let’s Get It Managed to get this right and live up to their name with 70 points, we managed a second place finish with 50 points.
Game Two
1. Mascots – What soda has used the mascot “Cool Spot?” 10

Geoffrey Holder in a 1980s advertisement for the soft drink mentioned above. What a voice he had!
2. Meetings – The Old South Meeting House was the organizing spot for what defining historic event that took place December 16, 1773? 9
3. 2000s Movies- Will Ferrell played a character named Mugatu in what 2001 comedy film? 8
4. Novels – What Charles Dickens novel featured a character named Fagan? This question is a VERY abbreviated version of the one that was asked, got this for 3 (I almost always lose a coin toss on questions about Dickens books).
5. Youngsters – Freddy Adu became the youngest person, at age 14, to play what sport professionally in the United States? This question also abbreviated. Got it for 7.
6. TV – Weeds and Dexter premiered on what premium cable network? 6
7. Tunnels – The Mont Blanc tunnel connects what two European countries? Name both for an extra bonus point. Got one but not both for 4.
8. Bones – What is the longest bone in a human forearm? FB clue, 5.
9. Singers – What singer won American Idol in 2007 and had hit singles titled “Battlefield,” and “No Air?” Evan all over this for 2 (thank goodness, I can name only a couple of AI winners, which virtually exhausts my knowledge of the show).
10. Kids’ Games – What Hasbro children’s game’s objective is to catch the most butterflies after they’ve been blown out of the nose by what animal? Evan again for the points.
Missed #1 and #4.
Scores – Ten teams, scores 22 to 59, with ‘Pods in first.
Final Category – Albums
According to Nielsen Music, the four best-selling albums of 2017, based on album sales and streaming and sales equivalents, each sold over 2 million units.
Name the artists for two of those four albums.
We managed to get one correct and our second guess was number FIVE on the list! Oh well, our moods were too good for us to get into a “funk,” about it, lol…
Team Steve took the $15 prize with 76 points, and (I think) More Beer Less Pants (playing under a pseudonym) took second. I’m just guessing they got second because the player handed in the answer, like right away, and also guessing that this player did not use the name “Team Steve!”
Well, that’s it for now! Our next trivia outing will be Monday. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Samantha from “Sex and the City!”
