Trivia Recap – March 13, 2018 – Powell’s Pub

“Patience is a virtue.” Those were words uttered on the mic by My Trivia Live “trivia jockey” George after he worked through some “technical difficulties” before Monday’s game. Those “technical difficulties” involved a bar patron who accidentally knocked the jukebox cord out of the socket while playing pool, so the jukebox machine had to be “rebooted.” Unfortunately, this happened just when Mike was starting to “groove” on Jethro Tull’s “Locomotive Breath!” Keep in mind this man tends to dislike a lot of music, so please try to feel his pain, will ya? 🙂 And not only that, the wicked flute solo was just starting! Pop quiz? How many rock songs feature flute solos BESIDES songs by Jethro Tull? 🙂 George came by a few minutes later and explained he was trying to get the sound working again, and since we were just chillin’ out with our beer and pretending to watch women’s NCAA basketball, all was good! The trivia game started about 15 minutes late, but still ended pretty close to on time. A bit more about the game, we finished in first for the night, winning a $30 gift certificate. We had 59 points going into the final question, which every team in the bar missed. Toward the end of the last round, one of the bar patrons led the bar in singing “happy birthday” to another patron named Reggie. We talked to Reggie after the game, he said he remembered seeing me at a name that tune game at McShane’s several months ago. Specifically, he recalled me beating him in the “lightning” round, in which I correctly named the song “Jungle Boogie” by Kool and the Gang after he had missed it. He also recalled that I had been playing with a “short blonde woman,” whom of course was Kimberly (she did a “that’s my jam” victory dance in the “dance off” at the end). All’s fair in trivia, war, and name that tune! Kimberly and I will be attempting to make some noise at a “Face The Music” game tonight in Plymouth, interestingly enough!
And…the questions!
Round One
1. Logos – How many sides does the current Best Buy logo have? 3
2. ’90s TV – What is Kramer’s first name on “Seinfeld?” 5
3. Candy – What candy manufactured by Tootsie Roll used to be called “Papa Sucker” until being changed to what name in 1932? Miss for 1.
Round Two
1. ’80s Albums – What band’s ’80s albums included “October,” “The Unforgettable Fire” and “The Joshua Tree?” The last one in the list was likely a gimme for all of the teams, got this for 5.
2. Trade – What product did John F. Kennedy attempt to exempt from the Cuban Trade Embargo? 3
3. Actors – What 1992 western film did Clint Eastwood star in and direct which also won best picture? For an extra three point bonus, on what 1960s series did Eastwood play a character named Rowdy Yates? Sadly, this bonus question was a tad bit early in our pop culture library, so we missed this, no points.
Round Three
1. Classic Literature – What is the first name of Dr. Frankenstein in Mary Shelley’s novel?
thebridesting.jpg
Jennifer Beals and Sting in the 1985 film The Bride. Sting played Frankenstein in this movie.
2. Recent Movies – What 2017 movie chronicles the life of P.T. Barnum and stars Zach Efron and Hugh Jackman? Miss, did not get the title quite right (someone let the lion out of the cage and have at us, as punishment, lol…). Missed for 3.
3. Geography – On what large island is Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia located? Torn between two possibilities, picked the wrong one, miss for 1.
Halftime – “mix it up”
Identify the alcoholic drinks based on their ingredients listed.
1. Rum, pineapple juice, coconut milk
2. Tequila, Triple Sec, salt, lime and sour mix
3. Honey, tea and brandy or whiskey
4. Rum, sugar, mint and soda water
Got them all.
Scores: Five teams, top three were ‘Pods, 31; Dan Smith, 33 and Ham Wallets, 35. Did not hear the fourth and fifth place scores.
Round Four
1. Musicals – The song There is Nothin’ Like a Dame appears in which musical? Newsletter clue, 6.
2. Olympics – What professional football, baseball and basketball player won the pentathlon and decathlon in the 1912 Olympics? Miss, I went with guy who ran the four-minute mile (my knowledge of old-timey athletes is a tad limited, I’m afraid…). Miss for 2.
3. Weather – Bahia Feliz is located in what country – and has 325 days of rain annually? We were on the right continent, but missed this for 4. I remembered being on a beach called Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys in 1981, so I was guessing bahia meant “beach” (it actually means bay, so I was close). Not that knowing what that word actually meant would have helped us get it right! I do remember it was a pretty sweet beach (though mom was kinda ticked because I left my sandals there and we didn’t notice until we were several miles down the road…d’oh!). Kids!
Round Five
1. Board Games – How many playing pieces does a player have at the beginning of a game of Backgammon? A whole lotta nope, miss for 2.
2. Inventors – What inventor, whose children were nicknamed “Dash” and “Dot,” proposed to his wife in Morse code? 6
3. Medicine – What type of cancers is diagnosed with a PSA test? Wrote down a long list of possibilities, picked correct one for 4.
Round Six
1. Historic Villains – What was the name of the man who worked for Nicholas (the last Czar of Russia), who was a self-proclaimed “holy man?” 6
2. T.V. Villains – Character actor, comedian and impressionist Frank Gorshin was best known for portraying what TV villain? Almost put a different villain from the same series but caught myself in time!
3. Movie Villains – What villain “didn’t spend six years in evil medical school to be called mister?” 2
Finished regular rounds with 59 points.
Scores – 45, ???; 46, Says Who; 57, Ham Wallets/Dan Smith; ‘Pods, 59.
Final Category – Weapons
In 1989, what country became the last country and so far the only country to create nuclear weapons and voluntarily dismantle them, shutting down the program?
We decided to wager one but weren’t too confident…
Final Scores: 49, ???; Ham Wallets, 57; ‘Pods, 58.
Until next time, which will be our “team” game Wednesday at Arbor Brewing Company (Ypsilanti). No, we’re not planning to play hooky again this week! As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Viktor Frankenstein!
