Editor’s Note: This is another from the “lost recaps” files! All of the questions, besides final/mystery questions we got wrong, have been re-written and replaced with questions we would have gotten correct. It was a just-for-fun thing I was doing during the off-season of 2014. Enjoy!

So we weren’t exactly a “power trio” like Nirvana, The Police or Green Day on our “extracurricular” trivia night Monday at MAIZ Mexican Cantina viaSporcle Trivia Nights With Rachel Sue. Maybe we were more like the ironically named Thompson Twins circa 1982-1986 since we played with just two guys and a woman and had some minor hits (anyone remember “Lay Your Hands on Me?” and “Hold Me Now?”) But the night was not without its interesting moments and little triumphs, like getting both nerd points correct.
Remember, folks, during the holiday season, we are altering our re-caps to include substituted questions for the questions we missed (except mystery rounds and final questions). You know where to look for the “real” questions. If you don’t by now, we’ll kindly point you in the right direction or use private messages. Our re-caps will also feature photographs of delusional characters from the movies. Let’s see if you can ID them all! Last week our re-cap photo was of Norma Desmond from “Sunset Boulevard.”
1. Pizza – In 2012, Denver Broncos player Peyton Manning purchased 21 franchises of national pizza chain for which he also serves as spokesperson? Brad nails this for big points.
2. Cities in song – Besides St. Louis, what Missouri city is mentioned by name in Nat King Cole’s “Route 66,” and also in Depeche Mode’s cover version of the same song? Gotta love the questions that make you sing to get the answer…
3. Actresses – What actress played Queen Elizabeth I in a 2005 miniseries and Queen Elizabeth II in a 2006 film? Torn between two, but picked the right one.
4. U.S. States – In which U.S. state would you find both the Red River Gorge Geological Area and Daniel Boone National Forest? What a coincidence, Heb and Mike did some camping here.
5. Diseases – The fungal disease white nose syndrome, first identified in 2006, affects what animal? Multiple choice given here, but only one choice actually has a “nose.” Easy, easy easy. Every team got this one right.
6. NBA teams – What NBA team was named for a villainous character in a high-grossing 1993 film? Brad was all over this one.
7. Comedians – The artwork for the 2013 Prince single “Breakfast Can Wait” featured what stand-up comedian dressed as Prince and serving pancakes? One of the best comedy series. Ever.
8. Television settings – What was the name of the street around most of the action was centered on “Desperate Housewives?” Brad said he was ashamed for knowing this one…
9. World War II history – What German city was the site of a series of military tribunals where prominent Nazis were prosecuted for their war crimes? History 101.
10. Book characters – What is the name of the main pirate character in Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island?”
Missed three questions in round one. Check in later with the comments for more about those. In the meantime, enjoy our three substituted questions – all with the same category names.
Mystery: Earth, wind, and fire. All answers will have one of the “elements” in them.
1. 2011 Adele single which was her third consecutive #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
2. Annual international event celebrating the environment on April 22.
3. Family of musical instruments including flutes, clarinets, and saxophones.
4. A 2008 sci-fi film featuring Keanu Reeves in a remade version of a 1951 film of the same name.
Got them all. Really, we did!
Heading into the final were 10 teams with scores ranging from 36 to 66, with Little Lebowski Urban Achievers and More Beer Less Pants being tied for first with nearly perfect scores of 66. We were in third place with 60 points.
Final category: Directors
Martin Scorsese made two films with exactly 11 Academy Award nominations since 2000. Name one of them.
A lot of debate between two, one which would have been correct, the other incorrect. Guess which one we picked? HINT: It has nothing to do with the photo we’re using with the re-cap, even though it was directed by the same man.
And enough teams bet big and got it wrong to allow three teams who wagered wisely to rise to the top. #3: Adios Amigos, #2: Die Hard (didn’t catch entire name) and #1: Handjobs Across America.
Game Two
1. Fast Food – What was the name of the large purple monster-like McDonald’s character introduced in the early ’70s? Yes, this guy was the source of one of Mike’s earliest childhood phobias. To this day he still doesn’t like large amorphous blobby things. Make him watch “The Blob” sometime to see this mojo in action.
2. In the news – Audio clue in which we mistook the actor for the guy he imitates famously on film. There you go – this is one we got wrong! Don’t say we didn’t do anything nice for all of you today 🙂
3. World events – The epicenter of the strongest earthquake in history was located in what South American country? And again Brad sends this one out of the park.
4. Mythology – Who was known as the “Messenger of the Gods?” This one had “Mike” written all over it.
5. Olympic events – Name one of the three weapons categories in Olympic fencing? Brad’s dad actually taught fencing to female college students at Western Michigan University, RIP Keith Nelson!
6. 1970s TV – On what series that aired from 1968 to 1980 did the characters work out of the real life building called Iolani Palace? So, so glad we asked the host to spell this.
7. Directors – What was director David Lynch’s highest-grossing film of all time (unadjusted for ticket price inflation)?
8. Lead singers – Within one, in what year did Van Halen lead singer David Lee Roth leave Van Halen to pursue a solo career? For nerd bonus, name Van Halen’s lead singer from 1996 to 1999. Got both.
9. Ice cream – what type of Nestle ice cream cone comes in varieties including classic and mint chocolate crunch among others? Didn’t write down the question exactly word for word, but we got this one right.
10. Planets – what is the second smallest of the eight planets in the solar system?
Missed two questions in game two. For visual mystery round, see is.gd/album24. We got them all.
Heading into the final: Nine teams with scores ranging from 34 to 64, with More Beer Less Pants and Your Resume Sucks leading the pack with 64 points each in a tie for first. We were in fifth with 56 points.
Final category: sports championships
Put the following cities in order from the earliest to the most recent time in which they won the following: Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup and NBA Championships – Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Dallas.
Brad worked so hard on this. But he switched the last two cities. Great effort anyway, buddy!
And the winners were:
2. Adios Amigos, 49 points and 1. More Beer Less Pants, 84. They were the only team getting this right. Well played!
Unsure when we’ll be able to return here, but as Arnold would say, “I’ll be back.” The beer and food prices were definitely right…now if only the stars would be right and we would WIN SOME BEER MONEY. Perhaps Wednesday. Until next time, Go Pods!
