A sneak peek at our 2018 trivia plans

We’ve been taking a bit of a trivia break the past few weeks. We have not been to any Sporcle Live games since the mid-November venue tournaments at Original Gravity Brewing Co. and Oscar’s Sports Grill (we qualified for finals in the latter spot). We plan to return to playing at Original Gravity for the spring/summer season beginning in April, and possibly Oscar’s, too. We thought it would be a hoot if we only tried qualifying at trivia spots beginning with the letter “O” last season (JK, of course).

Why haven’t we played in any Sporcle games? First off, it’s the off-season, so we thought it would be a good time to take a break. Secondly, this time of year is busy! Looking ahead to the next SL season, we haven’t quite decided what our game plan will be, but have given some thought to switching to the central division since (hopefully) it will be a closer drive for a finals tournament.  That, and a couple of our players live right next door to Canton, which is (for now) in the central division. Thirdly, it will be a chance to mix it up with different teams! Ennui and boredom do tend to rear their heads after a while!

From Edward Gorey’s delightful Gashlycrumb Tinies, which chronicles the strange, untimely deaths of children with names from A to Z.

A couple of our players who went to finals said they didn’t mind having to drive to East Lansing, but a couple of us were definitely not thrilled with the idea! Picking a centrally located tournament spot for the far-reaching west division – which includes Grand Rapids teams, Lansing/East Lansing teams, Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti/Saline/Milan teams AND Traverse City – had to have been a challenge! All that said, we live close to the “border” between the central and west division anyway, so jumping divisions – at least for a season to try it out – ain’t no thang! The ‘Pods, like The Dude, abide!

thedudeabides

Fun game to play! Name a movie in which Jeff Bridges appears, and say “The dude abides,” filling in the rest of the sentence with something he does in the movie! Example: “The dude abides in cyberspace” for the movie Tron – or “The dude abides while Michelle Pfeiffer lolls about on top of a piano” for The Fabulous Baker Boys.

Today we’re going to do something crazy (but not unprecedented) and play two trivia games in one day! We’ll be hitting up the My Trivia Live 3 p.m. game today at the Canton Bistro (which I call the “afternoon delight” game, though the questions the past couple of weeks have NOT been so delightful, lol). That Egyptian mythology halftime round left us feeling like a dead animal being gnawed upon by jackals!  At the “afternoon delight” game, Stacy and I will attempt to “warm the bench” and play under Kim’s league number, though she will not be able to join us. Later this evening, we’ll play the 8 p.m. MTL game at Powell’s Pub. We haven’t visited Powell’s for a few months, and a couple of us are feeling the itch!

We’re hoping to log a better score at Powell’s than the 49 points we got last Friday at Maplewood Lanes (we like to challenge ourselves from time to time). And that’s all, folks! Happy holidays, see y’all in the next recap(s)!
