Usually I dread the trivia nights where the space has to be shared with diehard sports fans, because there are sometimes people who do one of the following things that are tantamount to a trivia player horror story: blurt out answers that are right, or blurt out answers that are wrong. Seasoned trivia host Liz H. laid out some “ground rules” early on about blurting out answers, and so thankfully no such transgressions occurred! Cheering on touchdowns and good plays is par for the course, and just adds to the lively atmosphere. Sometimes sports fans, however, (like any other barfles) drink a tad bit too much, and as the BAC rises in their blood, so does their volume of voice! I am hearing that some patrons weren’t so well behaved at a trivia spot near Toledo Saturday evening, apparently a drunken person accused a played on Steele Trap of cheating! Speaking of Steele Trap, I have copied/pasted the questions from their recap, since I had to work this morning, and well, more laziness, less pants, right? Speaking of, why the HELL am I still wearing my dress pants for work? I gotta change into something more comfortable, stat, BRB…Ah, that’s better! Nice and fuzzy pajama pants (blissful sigh)! Things weren’t too bad Saturday at Oscar’s Sports Grill, my only real complaint was that nobody seemed to like my game one team name “Golden Gopher Stew.” What, not even a chuckle? You WOUND me,sir! ..Game reps this time were myself and Evan from Sticks team Trump 2020, overall, we teamed up quite well on the answers! Finished in first for the night with 108 points, won a $15/first place gift card in game one. We have to miss next week’s game, so it’s unlikely we’ll hold on to our first place venue spot we’ve had almost all season! So sad! But hey, life happens, right? And the questions…
Game One
1. Same Name: What eight letter name is shared by a model of Jeep and a brand of jeans endorsed by Brett Favre?
Yup.
2. Comic Strip Characters: In 1991, which comic strip character was named the official spokesperson for National Piano Month?
Yup. A rare game when I miss a “Peanuts” question!
3. Netflix: Created by David Fincher, what Netflix original series that launched in October 2017 stars Jonathan Groff as an FBI agent and hostage negotiator?
Evan does not have cable and watches lots of Netflix…yup.
4. Ice Cream: In 1969, Baskin Robbins introduced a flavor of ice cream called Lunar Cheesecake in honor of which numbered Apollo mission?
We had multiple choice on this: 8, 11, 13, or 17, got it.
5. Film Characters: What is the reptilian name of the character played by Kurt Russell in the 1981 film Escape from New York and its 1996 sequel Escape from L.A.? Yup.

6. Medicine: What -ology is the scientific study of drugs and how they are used in medicine? Yup.
7. Home Runs: In May 2015, Alex Rodriguez hit his 661st home run, passing which Hall of Famer for fourth place on the career home runs list? He retired after the 1973 season. Evan had a good guess here, but I chimed in with another guy whom I remembered had been mentioned in “Peanuts” comic strips from that era. We got it, for low.
8. Musicals: Macavity, Skimbleshanks, and Bustopher Jones are characters in which musical that debuted in London in 1981? And I may have started singing one of these songs here…”Macavity…Macavity…there’s no one like Macavity…” Yup, played songs from this musical in 10th grade marching band. “And when you reach the scene of crime…Macavity’s not there.” I like some of the songs, but did not care for the stage production.
9. National Parks: Death Valley National Park straddles the border between two US states. Name one. Bonus for both.
Third “Peanuts” related question of the night, we missed the bonus. Which “Peanuts” character lived here? Hint, he looked like this…

10. Political Scandals: Attorney and academic Anita Hill was at the center of a 1991 sexual harassment lawsuit involving which then US Supreme Court nominee? Yup.
Mystery Round: “Nov”ember. All answers will contain N-O-V in order.
1. A person new to or inexperienced in a field or situation.
2. To restore something old to a previous or better condition.
3. A team’s losing possession of a ball through error or minor violation of the rules, as in football or basketball
4. Its capital is Halifax
Yup, got all of these.
Heading into the final:
Twelve teams, scores 12 to 66, with Golden Gopher Stew (aka ‘Pods) in first. One is the Loneliest Number was in third with 60.
Final Category: Nominated Films
Final Question: Actor Michael Peña holds the rare distinction of having appeared in movies that were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture in three consecutive years. Two of them DID win Best Picture, and all films were released in the 21st century. Name ONE of them.
I am so thankful Evan was all over this. I have never heard of the guy. I was able to help out by naming best pictures around the time of the film he was thinking of.
Final Standings: ???, 50 (wagered zero), Golden Gopher Stew, 86.
Game Two
1. Dances: Conga music and its associated conga line dance originated in which Caribbean country?
Torn between two, picked wrong one.
2. 90s Movies: What 1995 comedy was loosely based on the 1815 novel Emma by Jane Austen? FB clue.
3. Plants: Deriving its name from the Greek words for green and leaf, what green pigment in plants converts sunlight to energy for photosynthesis?
Yup.
4. Battles: The battle of Osan was the first significant military engagement involving US troops during which war?
Yup.
5. Breakfast Foods: Which of the following has never been a flavor of Pop Tarts: blueberry muffin, peanut butter & jelly, hot fudge sundae, or peach cobbler?
Evan’s comment: “There really is literally nobody who is an expert in Pop Tart flavors.” Me? “If there is, I pity the fool…” Made right guess.
6. Motivational Speakers: Audio clip of a dude in a 2006 TED talk. We did not have this as an audio clue because of the louder than usual game crowd. Had we had it as an audio clue, Evan probably would have gotten it.
7. Johnny Cash: In what song did Johnny Cash sing that he “shot a man in Reno just to watch him die?”
Thankfully the only Johnny Cash song that came to my mind turned out to be correct. I got a little nervous after we handed it in and Evan mentioned a different song!
8. Olympics Mascots: Sam the Olympic Eagle was the mascot of the Summer Olympic Games held in which US city? Bonus: in what year did these Games occur?
We took a YUGE risk and went 8 on this. Without Brad, who is “Mr. Olympics.” Got it plus the bonus. Whew!
9. SNL Characters: What actor portrayed Garth in the Wayne’s World sketches on SNL as well as the subsequent films? We were so worried about this category we saved our one-pointer for it. Thankfully we were able to save it for the next question…
10. Statues: The three tallest statues in the world all depict what religious figure?
We figured the correct religious dude was too rotund to make a good tall statue. Miss.
Visual round, see below:

Got all of these correct.
Heading into the final:
Nine teams, scores 18 to 60, with Trivia Newton John in first. We were in second playing under the name I can’t Golden Gopher that. Puns are the lowest form of humor, but at that point, I didn’t care anymore!
Final Category: US History
Final Question: Within one, how many states had been admitted to the Union at the time Abraham Lincoln was assassinated?
We really tried on this one. We figured original 13 colonies, and added a bunch we figured had joined statehood by that time. We just didn’t pick quite enough…
Final Standings: Chips, 65; Trivia Newton John, 80. We’ll be back in the trivia saddle Wednesday, look for our next recap on Thursday afternoon! Oh yeah, what did I forget? Go Pods, and stay classy….Clarence Thomas!
