Trivia Recap – Oct. 1, 2017 – Oscar’s Sports and Grill

Special thanks to Liz H. for sending a FB message to me Saturday telling me that the game start time changed at Oscar’s Sports and Grill! There I was, just goofing off, watching a little TV, surfing the ‘net on my laptop….and then I get this message from Liz: “Did you see that the time of trivia at Oscar’s changed? Crystal (the manager) and I were concerned because you’re not here and you usually are.” So I hastily wrote back, “No, OMW.” Thankfully Evan was also planning to play with us, and lives a bit closer, so I messaged him, and he was able to arrive by question #4 and get the party started without us (thanks for that)! So what is the new game time? Well, Liz says it’s 8 p.m., but the Sporcle Live page lists the start time as 7:30 p.m. From my experiences, when a show gets temporarily canceled, an e-mail is sent out to the players who have played at that show. I have had e-mails sent to me when shows are canceled for a night. Couldn’t the same thing be done when a time changes for a show? Apparently other regular players/ teams also did not get the “memo” that the start time changed (I did manage to send a text to one other player who said they were not planning to play that night anyway). I’m sure this will all get ironed out by next Saturday! As for last night’s game, no scores have been posted yet, so I’m unsure how we wound up in the bar’s standings. We flunked both final questions, won two second place gift cards, finished with 104 points. And the questions…thanks again to Liz for writing down the first few questions for us! Here’s a unicorn emoji for you! 🦄 And the questions…alternate questions used in Toledo because of a cheating team have been edited in, please see comments for more explanation…
Game One
1. U.S. Landmarks – The Alamo is located in which U.S. City? None of us had arrived for this question, but we would have wagered 10 on it had we been there….
2. Breakfast Cereal – In 2014, what company enlisted D.C. Comics illustrators to redesign the mascots of its popular Halloweeen-themed cereals? Would’ve wagered 9 on this…
3. NFL Careers – Hall of Fame defensive back Darrell Green spent his entire 20-year NFL career from 1983 to 2002 playing for which NFL team?
4. The Human Body – What type of tissue connects muscle to bone? And this is the first question Evan was able to hand in for 10…
5. Mountains – The Appenine Mountains run through which European country? 4
6. Title Characters – Who plays the title character Max Payne in the 2008 film of the same name: 9 – this is when Mike and I arrived…Evan knew this one right away.
7. Advertising – What common food item was described as “Incredible, Edible” in a 1970s marketing campaign? 8
8. Artists – What painter’s last name is van Rijn? This is not the question that was actually asked, but it was the FB clue question and I did not write down the two paintings that were listed in the question…7 Here is a photo of one of his paintings:

9. Words from Latin – What is the 11-letter Latin word for second from last? 6
10. Love Interests – What is the name of Tom Sawyer’s love interest in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn?” My first solo “hit” of the night….
Mystery – Add ’em up – Total will be perfect square of 9
1.Number in title of 2012 stand-alone movie sequel starring Paul Rudd, which was a sequel to “Knocked Up.”
2. Kurt Cobain’s age when he died
3. Derek Jeter’s uniform number
4. Number of different signs in the Chinese zodiac
We kind of groaned at getting an “add ’em up” mystery round, but got all of these…
Scores: Six teams, 29 points to 60 with us in the top spot playing under the name “We Don’t Feel Tardy.”
Final Category – Academy Award Winners
Three actresses born in the 1980s have won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and they have all won within the last 10 years. Name two of those three actresses.
We discussed both of the right ones, but put down one who was born in 1990. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to watch a movie with this actress in it before our game! And yes, it was a movie she had won the award for best actress…
Our flub still allowed us to win second place…I don’t know who finished first.
Game Two
1. Directors – What “Star Trek” actor directed the 1987 film “Three Men and a Baby?” Not very confident, but got this for 3.
2. Scientific Terms – What is the term for the process during a nuclear reaction where an atom is split into multiple parts? Liz hinted that spelling was important here…10
3. The Supreme Court – Which president appointed both Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Stephen Breyer? 9
4. Bears – What six-letter term describes both a detective and a collective noun for a group of bears? Mike with right guess here for 5.
5. ’90s Music – Audio clue, had to name either the band or the song title, so, so familiar, but missed this for 2.
ALTERNATE QUESTION USED IN TOLEDO BECAUSE OF CHEATING TEAM:
5. Television: Rick Grimes is a deputy sheriff determined to keep his family safe on which TV show? This would have been easier for us, lol…
6. Companies – JW Foster and Sons, founded in 1895 and known for athletic footwear, was renamed in 1950s for an African antelope? 8
7. Mexico – What U.S. state shares the shortest border with Mexico? 4
8. Adult Swim – What is the last name of either Rick or Morty on “Rick and Morty?” 7
9. Book Titles – What musical instrument is in the title of Louis de Berniere’s book title “Captain Corelli’s (blank)?” For an extra nerd bonus, in what war was this book set? Got both parts for 6.
ALTERNATE QUESTION USED IN TOLEDO BECAUSE OF CHEATING TEAM:
9. Song Lyrics: Which of Paul Simon’s songs contain the lyrics: “A man walks down the street/He says Why am I soft in the middle now/Why am I soft in the middle/The rest of my life is so hard?” God this song was SO overplayed when it was released….and still is at some trivia shows!
10. Gravy – Before this question was read, Mike joked about how much I hate gravy (just give me butter and salt for my taters, thank you, maybe a little mayo for my fries when I’m feeling decadent….or some malt vinegar!)…and ironically enough, I was the one who ended up knowing this answer….What name for a Southern gravy made with ham drippings and black coffee shares its name with the name of a coffee drink? Got this for 1.
ALTERNATE QUESTION USED IN TOLEDO BECAUSE OF CHEATING TEAM:
Golf: What country will host the 2018 Ryder Cup, the first time the competition has been held there? Glad THIS wasn’t our question!
Visual Mystery – Got all of these.

visual930
Scores: Five teams, scores 28 to 61, with us in the top spot again. One is the Loneliest Number (who arrived in time for the second game, he also did not know about the time change) was in second with 42 points.
Final Category – Sporting Traditions
The Black-Eyed Susan cocktail is the official drink of what annual sporting event that takes place on the third Saturday in May?
For the second final question in a row, we managed to discuss what would have been correct…but alas did not write it down. We only wagered one point on this one, finished with a second place again. One managed to get this correct.
Well, that’s all for now! We’ll have another recap posted Thursday afternoon from our Wednesday game at Wurst. Until then, Go Pods, and stay classy, Santa Ana!
ALTERNATE FINAL QUESTION USED IN TOLEDO BECAUSE OF CHEATING TEAM:
Final Category: Cereal Boxes
Final Question: The first non-orange Wheaties box was released in the 1990s and was colored in honor of a US pro sports team to commemorate their championship season. What colors were used on the box?

  1. Also, it seems that Ralphie’s Holland’s policy of moving their game due to the Ohio State game may have resulted in a team deciding to cheat. The game in Holland began at 5:30, so it was over long before the game began in Oregon. A team that never plays at Ralphie’s Oregon had an absolutely perfect game in game one. So MC Matt changed a few of the questions in game two, including the final. The team in question missed enough of the switched questions. To add to the suspicion, they sat in the one table that it’s easiest to cheat at, in a corner and around a corner from the host.
Sad…is $30 in gift cards really worth that kind of effort??
