How our trivia team is like a “Star Trek” movie!

Another My Trivia Live season is just about in the books. We just finished our fifth season of playing in this league, and for the fourth time, finished in first place at The Wurst Bar (bonus points not withstanding). Two teams from the Wurst will advance to semifinals. We’re hoping that our team is not like a “Star Trek” movie. You know how “Star Trek” The Motion Picture” kind of sucked? God, I saw that when I was just 7 or so, and I could barely keep myself from falling asleep! What was WITH that bald alien woman?

When I was 7, bald women – and bearded men – kind of weirded me out. And nowadays, we have men who look like this literally almost everywhere…

You could cut through that pretension with a knife!

That said, the next movie “Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan” was really good. So one was bad, two was good.  And #2 also had Ricardo Montalban in it, who some of you might remember as “Mr. Rourke” from “Fantasy Island.” He also played a villain in “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad.” What a voice on that man! And body, wink-wink!

KHAN!!!!!!!

Then the third film, “Star Trek: Search For Spock” was kind of bad. So just to summarize, the even numbered “Star Trek” films tended to be good, the odd numbered ones tended to be bad (of course all of this is a matter of opinion). We went to our first finals in May, 2016 using a spot that another team had left on the side of the road with a “free” sign, wound up finishing 10th overall. So that first one didn’t really count, since we didn’t have to “qualify” to get there. So we’ll count our first semifinal bid – aka the “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” bid as when we failed to advance to finals in August, 2016 after playing at Woodstone Grill in Belleville. So our first bid for finals sucked as badly as “Star Trek:The Motion Picture. Second time around, in December, 2016, we played our “Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan” semifinals in Saline, and advanced to finals. We wound up finishing sixth overall at the finals held at the ROC Bar in Plymouth. Then we had our third semifinals, aka the “Star Trek: The Search for Spock” semifinals in March, 2017 – where we failed to advance to finals (kiss my grits). Some of you who were playing that day will get this reference! Fourth semifinals roll around, aka our “Star Trek: The Voyage Home” semifinals. Pretty smooth sailing, we advanced to finals after a semifinal game at Wurst (our “home” bar, which kind of fits with the “Voyage Home” theme, lol), and managed to win first at the finals. We’re kind of going into our fifth semifinal bid with a bit of trepidation, since the “Voyage Home” movie was SO good. Seriously, it’s the BEST of the franchise, imho! They time travel to San Francisco, Spock is super funny, gives a nerve pinch to an annoying bus passenger, Kirk puts his moves on the blonde whale lady (who winds up playing the kid’s mom a couple of years later in “Child’s Play,” a bit of trivia for you), and everyone was freaking out about Chekhov’s Russian accent. That was a good movie! Our fifth bid for semifinals will be our “Star Trek: The Final Frontier” bid. And we’re nervous because that movie wasn’t very good (imdb backs me up here). We want nothing more than to break this habit of only qualifying for every other finals! We need another box office hit, dammit! Only Cthulhu knows for sure how things will go…As for trivia tonight, we are taking a break during this “bye” week. A couple of us will be playing at Original Gravity Brewing Co. on Thursday, unless one of them bails, then there will be only one! We’ll see y’all in the next recap, which will be posted on Friday!
