Trivia Recap March 3, 2015 – Maiz Mexican Cantina

Wound up in third place for the night behind More Beer Less Pants and Little Lebowski Urban Achievers on our first “Pub Champions League” outing at MAIZ Mexican Cantina. We were missing one of our stronger players, Dave K., but gained another, Sam N., who was key for helping us out on a tough game one final about, of all things, math. Shout out to her for knowing the value of “E” in “E=MC2.” Two NBA draft-related questions and an unfortunate six-point loss on a concert tours question kind of hurt us, but we will shake it off and stay aboard, curious to see how the new format plays out. We’ll be back at it again on Wednesday at Arbor Brewing Company Microbrewery.
To view the standings, visit, standings.
And the questions…
Game One
1. Firsts: In 1988, Delta Airlines became the first carrier to ban what practice by passengers on its domestic flights? Hint: it’s not running into the cockpit and yelling “bomb.”
2. Museums: Which US state is home to both the National Atomic Testing Museum and the Burlesque Hall of Fame? Overthought this one to our folly.
3. Film Characters: What character has been played on film by Bernard Lee, Robert, Brown, Judi Dench, and Ralph Fiennes?
4. Musicals: Which musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice concentrates on the life of Eva Perón? Don’t cry for me, Cthulhu!
5. US History: The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, took place on which day of the week?
6. NASA: Juno is a spacecraft launched by NASA in 2011 that will orbit and study which planet in 2016? And we lost our nerd street cred here.
7. TV Debuts: Audio clip of the theme song from a show popular with the elderly. Had to be within two years of its debut (a Toledo venue had to be within one year). Redemption! Got it within one. Kudos to Brad for recognizing the theme song, and Heather for nearly nailing the year dead-on. That’s f–ing teamwork!
8. Commercials: In commercials, Peyton Manning sings alternate lyrics to the tune of which company’s jingle? Yay Brad…
9. Retired Numbers: Which uniform number did the Yankees retire in honor of Lou Gehrig in 1949? Toledo had a nerd bonus on this one about Don Mattingly, we did not. We had multiple choice on this, and Brad picked the right one (whew).
10. Tours: Which female singer has embarked on the Good Girl Gone Bad tour, the Last Girl tour, and the Loud tour since 2007? What a terrible question to have only a six-point slip to use. Boo…
Mystery Round: Before and After
1. TV sitcom featuring cousins Larry and Balki/Comedy Central series starring Amy Sedaris
2. Chicago Bulls center drafted in the first round of the 2007 NBA draft/Actor who played Dr. John Carter on ER
3. Largest cable company and internet provider in the US/2000 film featuring Wilson the volleyball
4. Second studio album by Metallica/Character voiced by Owen Wilson in the 2006 film Cars
Missed #2.
Final Category: Math Class
Final Question: Put the following math values in ascending order: π, e, the square root of 8, 3
What a night to have an actual post-grad math student among our ranks…got it, but didn’t put us in money zone. 75 total points. Kudos to Sam N. for knowing the value of “e.”
Game Two
1. Architecture: What is the term for the triangular portion of a wall that encloses the end of a pitched roof?
2. US Presidents: Within one, how many future US presidents were alive when the Declaration of Independence was ratified? Nerd bonus for the exact number. Wait, what? So we have to know the birth years of presidents now? Our “presidents” person had better get to work…
3. Reporters: In 2003, which Fox News reporter was the subject of criticism for revealing troop movements to viewers while traveling with a US Army division?
4. Hit Songs: What band reached #1 in 1986 with the song “Invisible Touch” from the album of the same name?
5. Socialites: Which of the following is the oldest: Nicky Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, or Nicole Richie?
Heather came up with the correct answer based on this infallible logic – “— has been married twice, so she must be the oldest.”
6. Foreign Capitals: Hobart is the capital and most populous city of which Australian island state?
7. 60s TV: What sci-fi TV series that aired from 1963 to 1965 opened with the line “There’s nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture?”
Got it, thanks to our “old guy” Brad, and our sci-fi nerd Mike.
8. Dresses: Which actress gained media attention in 1994 by wearing a black Versace dress held together by oversized gold safety pins to the premiere of her then-boyfriend’s film?
And we thought Jenny McCarthy was such a good guess. No, it wasn’t…
9. NBA Draft: Which team drafted forward Larry Johnson first overall in the 1991 NBA draft out of UNLV? Nerd: With which NBA team did Johnson finish his career? Our only sports guy in attendance doesn’t know a damned thing about draft picks, unfortunately…
10. Autobiographies: Bill Clinton, Magic Johnson, and Burt Reynolds all used which two word title for their autobiographies?
Blank faces all around. Just couldn’t come up with it.
Visual: Got them all, see Spaceballs: The Trivia Team for those.
Final Category: Who Am I?
Final Question: I began my career as a stand-up comedienne in 1975 and became the second woman to host Saturday Night Live the same year. I was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for a 1975 film. I made appearances on many television shows, including Murphy Brown, Will & Grace, and Desperate Housewives. My given first name is Mary. Who am I?
This was not an easy question for the teams in attendance, we made a “strategic” bet yet still failed to come up with it. Didn’t even think of that old Robert Altman film until after we handed in our slip (drat!). When Sporcle updates the standings we will either edit this post or put it into the comments. Stay classy, Ypsilanti! And Go Pods!
