Trivia Recap – Game #899 – April 7, 2026 – Red Rock Barbecue – Sporcle Events – Ypsilanti, MI

We know all hot streaks have to come to an end sometime, even if we’ve never gambled in a tribal casino – or a Detroit one – or a Toledo one – or a Vegas one! We occasionally buy lottery tickets just to justify having lottery fantasies, but gamblers…we’re not.

Though we did make some gambles against our brains during the trivia game at Red Rock Barbecue in Ypsi!

The bar was pretty busy on this night, though not everyone was there for trivia (IKR). The Tuesday all day beer happy hour is a draw (cider and NA beers and hop waters are also on special).

We’ve seen enough movies about gambling escapades that have gone south! We know that our debt to the trivia gods for our good luck over the past three games must be repaid eventually by having a shitty game 💩

We finished first for the night with 113 points, dangerous nights finished second with 102 points.

We won one $20/first place prize and a $10 second place prize.

Special shout out to our friend Brad for getting every single sportsball question – including an entire sports mystery round – correct 💯

Here were our questions:

Game One/Round One

1 Court – What is the 11-letter term for a criminal court proceeding that consists of an open reading of the indictment to the defendant and a call for them to submit their plea?

2 Old Cities – Cahokia, one of the largest pre-Columbian cities in North America, was located in what is now what Midwest U.S. state, where its remains are a UNESCO World Heritage site?

Each one of us had a different guess for what state this could be. And none of us were right!

3 SNL Pairs – Name one of the two Saturday Night Live cash members who played Marty culp and Bobbi Mohan-Culp who perform medleys of popular songs at school functions in sketches between 1996 and 2002.

NERD POINT: Name both cast members.

Miss and miss. Clearly we were watching more Mad TV during this time than SNL…

4 Social Media – The social media trend “What were you like in the ’90s?” Which consists of users showing a montage of their photos from the decade, is accompanied by a song what band?

FB host clue. Thank the gods. Music by this band does not represent my 90s experience! Not that it’s a bad song, but it’s not really my jam. I guess it’s – to quote Douglas Adams – “Mostly Harmless.”

Mystery Round One

For this mystery round, there are four answers, and they must be placed in the correct order.

Place the following MLB teams in order according to when they last won 100-plus games during the regular season beginning with the most recent.

Teams:

Chicago Cubs

Houston Astros

Los Angeles Dodges

San Francisco Giants

Brad hit this one out of the park (yeah baby)!

Round Two

5 Musicals – In 2013, Cyndi Lauper won the Tony Award for  Best Original Score for what musical, making her the first solo woman to win in that category? We guessed by putting down the name of one of her songs. Nope.

6 Mergers – During an investor call in March, 2026, it was announced that what streaming service will combine with HBO Max as a result of the planned sale of Warner Bros. Discovery? Mike had good guess here.

7 Exploration – In 1989, Voyager 2 became the first (and to date, only) spacecraft to perform an up-close observation of what planet that takes roughly 165 years to orbit the sun? Miss. We were off by one.

8 Movie Siblings – In a 1950 animated film and its 2015 live-action remake, Drizella and Anastasia are the stepsisters of what Disney princess?

Mystery Round One

Answer the following questions about World Health Day.

M1 What word fills the blank in World Health Day’s 2026 theme – “Together for health. Stand with BLANK?

M2 The largest international public health initiative, created in 1988 and led by the World HEalth Organization, seeks to eradicate what infectious disease that had its first vaccine introduced in the 1950s?

M3 What city in Switzerland is home to the headquarters of the World Health Organization?

M4 The World Health Organization has a number of official global public health days and weeks, including one on December 1 every year since 1988 that is dedicated to raising awareness of what public health issue?

Missed #1.

We were in fourth out of seven teams going into the final in game one with 39 points behind are we not doing phrasing anymore?, who had 40 points, stiff tutu who had 47 and 212 who had 48.

What constellation is named for a mythological queen who was placed in the sky after angering Poseidon by claiming that she and her daughter were more beautiful than the sea nymphs?

Mike started typing this into his phone immediately.

We got this and finished second in game two with 54 points behind are we not doing phrasing anymore?, who had just one point with 55 points.

Game Two/Round Two

9 Curling – What is the three-letter term for a round in a game of curling, which consists of each team shooting eight rocks? Brad was spot-on with all of the sports questions on this trivia night – this was the second question about sportsball (well, sports rock shoved leisurely on an icy surface) that he got right for us on this night!

10 Audio clip of a song, it was very loud in the bar, and we really couldn’t hear let alone recognize the song very well over the noise of the loud group of about seven chatty men sitting right behind us at a table at the bar. But Mike decided to take a “gamble” anyway – and said “This sounds terrible, this must be the Black Eyed Peas.” Damn – he was right! 😂

11 Movie Titles – What 2019 film starring Tom Hanks has a tile inspired by lyrics in the theme song of a children’s TV show hosted by Fred Rogers?

Good news is we picked a film about Mr. Rogers. Just not the right one. Miss.

12 Vegetables – What root vegetable, also called a swede, is the result of cross breeding between the cabbage and the turnip?

Some produce sections still call this “The Swede.” Not to be confused with this colorful character from the historical drama series Hell on Wheels:

I bought a couple of these vegetables for a holiday dinner in 2019. They were my second choice – can you believe that turnips – my first choice – were completely sold out? I even decided to be a complete Karen and ask if any turnips might be hiding in a stock room!

Good thing is my potato-rutabaga mash turned out quite well! Bad news is I was terrified of having a kitchen knife accident while handling these things! They’re not easy to peel – and you need a really good big knife to cut them – which might incite homicidal urges in certain individuals 🤣

Me versus rutabaga in 2019 (thankfully I won the battle).

Mystery Round Three

Add ‘Em Up

The correct answers to the following clues will be numbers, the sun of all will add up to 37.

M1 Numeric title of a 2009 single by Taylor Swift about her freshman year of high school

M2 Number of occupations that can be chosen at the beginning of the 1985 version of The Oregon Trail

M3 Number of Pleiades in Greek mythology

M4 Jersey number worn by Tom Brady throughout his NFL career

We jokingly discussed whether “butcher” was an Oregon Trail occupation. We decided that only the Donner party had one of those! 🩻

We got all of these.

Round Four

13 Time Zones – What island European country uses Greenwich Mean Time year round?

14 The Sun – Nearly three-quarters of the mass of the Sun’s photosphere is made up of what element?

15 Writers – What 18th-century English writer and philosopher is best known for A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, in which she argues that women are not naturally inferior to men and deserve equal educational access?

NERD POINT: This writer is the mother of what author born in 1797, with whom she shares her first name?

Miss and miss. We knew about the daughter, but didn’t know that her mother was so…awesome 😎! And also a writer. I love it when I learn new things in trivia games!

16 Sitcoms – From 1975-1983, actor Pat Morita had a recurring role as a restaurant owner nicknamed “Arnold” on what sitcom? Yay we’re old 😁

Mystery Round Four – Visual

Identify the people that have been used in commercials for some insurance company.

We were in second with 44 points going into the final, behind stiff tutu, who had 46 points. Are we not doing phrasing anymore was in third with 43, dangerous nights was in fourth with 37, fist my bump was in fifth with 25, Tantalus was in sixth with 24, 212 was seventh with 22 and dead Kennedys had 12 points and were in eighth place.

Final question game two:

Category – Song Titles

We decided to take a “gamble” here. What if the song skewed too recent for us old folks with zero interest in newfangled *music*?

When I heard the word “1970s” in the question I celebrated a little out loud!

I haven’t been this excited about a music final question since we had that Earth, Wind and Fire one back at the YpsiAlehouse in 2023! That Dire Straits q we had in a music quiz game was pretty sweet too 😃

We finished first in game two with 59 points, dangerous nights finished right behind us with 52. Damn, we said to them last week that they’d “get us next time.” Maybe next time?

Our 900th Sporcle Events game is tonight and will be a virtual affair! It’s not easy hustling too many people for live games anymore. It’s always a great excuse to talk to people we don’t get to see in person very often.

As always, Go Pods and stay classy, Fred Rogers! Who knew that your fashion style would one day be stolen by hipsters?
