A certain Motown group that we always seem to confuse us with a similar Motown group once sang “Reach Out, I’ll Be There.”

IRL I did that very thing! I reached out to my trivia teammate Amy and asked if she could help out in our Sporcle Events music quiz game last week…
And she said yes! Not only that, but she brought a couple of great helpers, too. Her daughter Morgan and Morgan’s BF Max.
Highlight of the game was when Amy and I merged our knowledge of the people named in Madonna’s song “Vogue” with Morgan and Max’s knowledge of modern rock and pop songs.
I really needed as much help as I could get for this game because our fearless leader Kim was out of town on a trip to New York. No reports yet as to whether she managed to see her teenage crush Jon Bon Jovi in the wild when she crossed the border into Jersey!
We didn’t win any prizes in our game or get either final question correct, but that was OK!
After all, we wouldn’t want Kim to feel like we don’t need her, would we? π
Because Kim is as much of a trivia junkie as I am, she and her husband Brent visited Becker’s Bar in New Hudson for their music quiz scene last night.Β She had just returned from her spring break trip and just had to get her trivia fix!
Yeah…I’ve done things like that too π!
If she needed to be reminded of who the best playa is on her music quiz team…
She did better than her team did playing without her! She for both final questions correct and won a $20 first place prize!
Full disclosure, there was no sharing of the questions we had in our Monday game with Kim before she played her music game Saturday. Well, maybe just one (I didn’t do it) !π
It was not a final question (scouts honor)!
Kim and Brent scored 137 points in their game (with mostly the same questions) and me, Amy, Morgan and Max only managed 84 points and won no prizes.
Like that Sam Smith song says…
“The writing is on the wall.”
I’ll graciously accept my pink slip!
Yes, we missed you, Kim π π₯Ί
We remain in second place in the overall standings but competition is tight! If we’re not fighting tooth and nail for supremacy in our weekly trivia games, it just doesn’t feel like a “real” trivia game, does it?
Here is a generalized recap of the questions. You’ll have to do your best to figure out the answers. Most of our questions were based on audio clips, which Indo not have the ability to re-share here.
Game One/Round One

2020s Pop – For this one, we heard from a red-haired male British singer that a lot of chicks love who was singing about being cold or something. I don’t know if he also has just used a urinal (you’ll have to ask him lol).
Amy’s daughter Morgan was all over this one… π
90s Family Groups – For this one, we heard a Swedish non-ABBA band that was hot in the early 1990s who sang about something that they saw after looking into someone’s eyes. It was quite a catchy tune (I think it’s still stuck in my head). Earworm! π π
Amy and I were all over the artist and title of this one (popular when we were both in college), but we weren’t so sure of the TV series in which this song was covered by the fictional band Girl Talk. Oops.
Soul – We were able to at least guess the title of this song by the guy who also sang a song about something making him want to “shout.”
We missed the nerd point about where this record was recorded (psst it was the same place (Lorraine Hotel) where Martin Luther King was assassinated).

2010s Pop – Morgan was the heroine here again, woot! She was able to spot the song by the female star of Only Murders in the Building. Sadly we missed the nerd point which was about criticism of this song’s video being too similar to what song by Maroon 5? Sadly we did not have trivia “Moves Like Jagger!” Did you know that 82-year-old Mick Jagger brought a 30-something piece of arm candy to a recent awards show? Now THOSE are moves like Jagger!

Mystery Round One – We had to decide, based on first words in the following song titles, whether the thing in that word sinks – or floats.
I can’t exactly play the songs, so here were the items we had to decide about whether they sink or float:
Oil (Oil and Water), Diamonds, Candle in the Wind, and whatever the last song was (did not get down the title, but it was by Kurtis Blow).
Did Kurtis Blow take inspiration for his name from the Lynyrd Skynyrd song “The Ballad of Curtis Loew?”
Doubtful. π’
Round Two
Gothic Rock – Finally I had a real chance to take a swing and hit this one out of the park! This was a “romantic” 1989 Billboard hit by the band led by British singer Robert Smith, we also had to decide which film starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler had a cover of this song by 311.

Rock Ballads – Single word hit love song by Journey that was probably played at lots of wedding receptions in the 1980s (not Open Arms, which has two words).
For our nerd point, we had to pick which of his hit songs Prince worried sounded too similar to this one – which prompted him to reach out to the other band’s keyboardist? Mission accomplished, three for three!
American Idols – A Jennifer Hudson song ( we missed the artist) was played here, we were able to guess the title, not the correct artist, but for our nerd point asking for what rapper she’s been dating since 2022? Nope.
Hard Rock – Song by a band with Jimmy Page as the lead guitarist and John Bonham the drummer was played here – with a two word name (one word is an animal). We had to ID the lead singer. Easy, easy, peasy.
Mystery Round Two
They played four songs here, they stopped the song at a certain point, and we had to finish the lyrics. They told us how many words we’d need. I can’t really recreate these, you kind of had to be there to hear this one.
We were in fourth with 55 playing under the name Li’l Kim’s Backup Dancers. Resting Pitch Face was in first with 62; Strip Your Bartender was in second with 59, and Fumed Friends was in third with 56.
For the final in game one, they played songs by the following songs – Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Eric Clapton. Here was our question:
The first name of what ten-time Grammy-winning artist completes the blank in the following ecerpt from a speech by Bruce Springsteen introducing him at the 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony (please provide the artist’s full name)?
“The way that Elvis freed your body, BLANK freed your mind. He showed us that just because the music was innately physical, it did not mean that it was anti intellect.”
I talked myself out of the correct guess here because I was thrown off by the wording of this quote π
No teams got this correct. Sadly we always seem to wager it all on music quiz nights.
Zero wagers prevailed. But wagering zero would not have helped us here.
Game Two/Round Three
Hip Hop – We missed this, unsure whether we got any points out of this (sorry don’t have more details). I hear that Kim got this right in her game.
Speaking of not having more information, ditto for 2020s Collabs.
Movie Songs – They played a single-word song by the same singer who sang “What a Feeling” a couple of years later for Flashdance. Great chance to actually get some points! Yay for 80s music!
Motown – They played the “Reach Out I’ll be There” song, and and we actually picked the right artist this time! We’re usually torn between two artists when we hear certain Motown songs. I did not get a good photo of the slide showing the nerd point stuff, so…nope.
Mystery Round Three
In honor of April Fool’s Day, we had to give the titles of four different songs by artist with the word “fool” in the titles. One of those artists was the Cardigans, don’t know the others.
We got three of these correct.
Folk Rock – My “Yay I’m old moment” for spotting a song by the Horse with No Name artist. We also managed to get the nerd point guessing the original name of the song out of three choices given to us – Lost in the sun, Heat and Silence, or Desert Song.
Mike also helped with this one! Everyone contributed on this night π

Grunge – They played one of the dozen or so songs from the Singles movie soundtrack by a band with Jerry Cantrell as one of its members. Song title had a single word followed by a question mark.
This was one of those movies where I bought the soundtrack when it came out, but skipped the movie. Great collection of grunge songs!
2000s Pop – Morgan again did not disappoint! She knows her modern jams! π΅ πΆ
For this one, the title of the “Roar” singer could very well describe coffee temperature choices, bathroom faucet choices, or that kids game where you’re trying to find something, and the person guiding you tells you if you’re getting warmer – or dipping your hand into ice.
We needed to know what kiddie show debuting in 1969 featured this singer. We discussed two possibilities for the show, but thankfully we remembered which one debuted in 1969.
Indie Bands – We actually KNEW THIS! Well, Morgan did. Who da hell is Tame Impala? π€
Aren’t all Chevy Impalas kind of tame? I mean, if you want a Chevy with balls, you get a Corvette or a Camaro. If you want a roomy, practical sedan, you choose an Impala (which they don’t make anymore). Maybe try a Buick Lucerne like my dad has?
Hey I’m not bad-mouthing a great full-sized sedan (I do love the leg room). Didn’t matter, Morgan knew this! Yay!
Side note, they started making the Chevy Malibu models more roomy after they stopped making the Impala. We had a loaner Malibu when we had a car repair in 2021, and the guy at the dealer said that they jokingly called the new Malibus “Impalabus.”
My clothes bag fit really well behind my pushed back seat and did not fit in the same space in our 2013 Malibu, so I can attest to the greater interior space first hand!
Wait…we’re still talking about music trivia – and this isn’t turning into a car blog, is it? π π All right, shifting gears π
Usually we are SUCK in the category of “indie bands.” We all have “those” categories that we dread don’t we?
Mystery Round Four

Finally a chance for the old lady (me) and younger Amy to be able to collaborate with the kiddos! We had to identify artists played in four different clips whose names are shared by people mentioned by name in the Madonna song Vogue. Morgan’s boyfriend Max was able to name that hard rock band (Greta Van Fleet) from Frankenmuth who has part of its name shared by the reclusive star of the movie “Camille.” Max was SO excited to contribute this answer to the game! Sometimes enthusiasm about trivia knowledge can be infectious! Seriously you should have seen his smile π
We also heard songs by Lauryn Hill (Lauren Bacall), Jimmy (James Dean) Eat world and Rita (Hayworth) Ora.
I don’t get down the standings or points, but I think that we were in fourth or fifth going into the final for game 2.
Final question game two:
What artist sent Kendrick Lamar the following text message after beating him out for Best New Artist and Best Rap album at the 56th Grammy Awards in 2014?
“You got robbed, I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and it sucks that I robbed you.”
Some teams got this, we did…not.
Kim got this at her game!
Resting Pitch Face finished first again with 71, Strip finished second.
We’ll be back at it Monday. We may even hit up a “special” music event in Milan this coming weekend (stay tuned)!
As always, Sparty On, Go Pods and stay classy Wilson Pickett!
