Trivia Recap – Game #893 – March 23, 2026 – Corner Brewery – Sporcle Events – Ypsilanti, MI

What songs or musical artists do you think of when you are given the word “waiting?” Maybe it’s I’ve Been Waiting For a Girl Like You?

Maybe the first songs you think of with the words “wait” or “waiting” are Wait For U by Future featuring Drake and Tems, Wait by Maroon 5, Right Here Waiting by Richard Marx, Waiting on a Friend by the Rolling Stones, I’ll Wait by Van Halen or the simply titled Wait by White Lion.

Anyone else notice how many hair bands had the word “white” in their names in the ’80s?

While we didn’t have any actual questions about songs with the word “waiting” in them in our most recent music quiz game…

Music Quiz games at Corner can still be a “waiting” game! Waiting for what, you ask? Your opportunity to answer a question that you know!

Somewhere…drowned in a sea of questions about musical genres you know little or nothing (in most cases, the latter) about is…

A question that nudges you from your near slumber, makes you raise your hand and say “Oh…OH! I’ve GOT this!”

Ooh ooh I know this one!

Some of you regular followers of this blog might spot this as a “triviagasm.” You know – that moment in a trivia game that you’re so excited to know an answer that you get…overly excited πŸ˜‰

You can use your imagination to figure out how it plays out when it happens! πŸ˜‰

To say that I’m a “backup dancer” on our trivia team is an understatement. I’m more like that random sesh musician that gets called when the recording session goes into the wee hours and they need someone to do a killer recorder solo or possibly a triangle solo. Gutbucket? Hurdy-gurdy? Contrabassoon? Maybe not as awesome as Jean Roussel, who was hired by The Police to play the piano on their hit song Every Little Thing She Does is Magic. They were hesitant to do this, but the piano really sends the song into the stratosphere, imho. 🎹

Back in early 1973, an English session singer named Clare Torry got a phone call from Alan Parsons (you know – the future Alan Parsons Project guy), who was helping Pink Floyd cut their Dark Side of the Moon album. They needed a female singer – and could she come in to help out?

She hemmed and hawed a bit, because she had tickets to see Chuck Berry. But she remembered that Abbey Road Studios paid double if you came in on a Sunday. So she said yes…and she became a legend when she supplied her haunting, hartowing vocals on Great Gig in the Sky.

She wasn’t part of the band, or a music producer like Alan Parsons – but those vocals though 😲 (you have to listen to it if you don’t already know about this track). She later successfully sued to make sure that she got a songwriters credit for her work (the details were not revealed).

She may not have provided a wailing guitar solo on the songs Time, or Money – or the thoughtful keyboard solo in Great Gig in the Sky, but she provided something nobody else in the band could. The feels. With her voice.

In our most recent game, I did have to wait around quite a lot to be able to really help out my team. But when I did – I wound up knowing something that nobody else in the bar knew!

What’s the name of that song from the 1976 film Rocky that is used as the theme song?

Lots of guesses for Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger, but I knew what the real title was. What? You want me to give the answer? OK, but just this one – it’s Gonna Fly Now by composer Bill Conti (who also composed some notable TV themes in the 80s).

Our “hybrid” trivia team of Pods and Sparty On players Monday nights is still battling it out for leaderboard supremacy every week! With nothing but questions about songs we know absolutely nothing about to stop us! And “featured artists* (groan).

We had questions in categories of pop stars, new wave, soul, 1970s ballads, garage rock, Latin artists, 1990s Alt Rock and 2000s collabs, among others.

If you were able to spot a song by an American Idol singer whose song was co-written by a Canadian female punk singer, you were able to ace the “pop stars” category!

Were you into Betty or Wilma? Yeah I know, redheads always win!

In the category of New Wave, they played a song by a Georgia-based band led by Kate Pierson. We also needed to know what 1960 animated series for which they recorded a song cover. Kinda narrows it down a bit? Not gonna be The Simpsons!

They played an emotional 1970 ballad by a former Beatle featuring piano and drums. They also wanted to know which 1994 film he appeared in with the title character via CGI magic. Hint – it wasn’t a velociraptor from Jurassic Park! Now you can’t stop thinking about what that would be like, can you?

The 1990s Alt Rock category played a song by Crash Test Dummies, and likely the only one you can name by that band. Ya know…the one where they didn’t bother with any actual words in the chorus? Yeah, that one! They sound either contemplative, or sound like they might be eating something delicious πŸ˜‹

For 2000s collabs, they played a Gwen Stefani song about a girl with lots of money, had to identify which artist was singing along with her. We did not get this one correct when it came to naming the featured artist. That is one of our music trivia banes – “featured artists.” Those questions get us almost every time!

Our game one final question asked us about:

Duos

Which band formed in 1993 took its name from a negative review in Melody Maker magazine? Their former band was called Darlin.

Our “lead singer” Kim was able to come up with this band.

Sadly, we’ll be without her services our our next game Monday, but hopefully we’ll have some of our our usual helpers attempting to step into her vast knowledge areas! And maybe I won’t have to wait around too long to be able to help with an answer!

The rock band Foreigner had to wait to have a #1 song for quite a while – logging a handful of top 10 hits on the US charts before they hit #1 with I Want to Know What Love Is.

Patience is a virtue!
