Trivia Recap – Game # 892 – Red Rock Downtown Barbecue – Sporcle Events – Ypsilanti, MI

No answers for this one, just do your best! I had a lot of technical difficulties this morning typing this up because of my tablet dying and my laptop barely functioning 😩, so just roll with it! Thanks!

After a bit of hemming and hawing about what the hell we wanted to do on a cold St. Patrick’s Day evening, we ultimately decided…

Sporcle Events trivia at Red Rock then? 🤔

Everyone loves leprechauns, right? ☘️

Our semi-regular Tuesday trivia spot – a My Trivia Live game at McShane’s Pub called off their trivia night for the holiday, so that was not an option for us.

Other than not doing so hot in the games, we found some good reasons to come back and play here occasionally!

For one, it smells fantastic! Even if you’re not a big fan of eating smoked and barbecued meats, boy do they smell good! It’s also nice and warm in there on chilly evenings, the bar seats are comfy and…most importantly…

Half priced draft beers during trivia games! I think the Tuesday all-day happy hours that this place used to do back when they first opened in 2012 are back! That even included NA beer, which made me very, very happy! 😁 I love that the NA beer was on draft and not served in some dusty bottle that tastes a bit skunky from sitting around too long. 🤮

They also offer a full bar with spirits if beer isn’t your thing, and food, of course. It’s food focus is, as the name suggests, barbecued fare. We don’t usually eat during trivia games, so I can’t really give reviews of it, but I have tried the mac and cheese (it’s yummy)! 😋

The first game was all St. Patrick’s Day questions, the second game was just general knowledge questions. We did not win any prizes, but came close in game two!

Here were our questions:

Game One/Round One

1 Folklore – What is the “B” name of the spirit of Irish legend that warns of impending death by shrieking?

2 Travel – What low-cost airline was established in Irelnd in 1984 and is today headquartered in the town of Swords? Miss.

3 Light, slip, single, double, hop and treble are all types of what folk dance usually performed solo and closely associated with Irish dance?

Team Names – Name one of the two schools that play football in the American Conference whose team names include the word “green.” One school is in the city of Denton as is known as the “Mean Green,” while the other is in New Orleans and is known as the “Green Wave.”

NERD POINT: Name both schools.

Got one, not both.

Mystery Round One

Name These People (With a Hint)

Give the first and last name of the person described in each clue that connects them to a famous Patrick. Hint: The first and last initials of each person can be combined and rearranged to spell the name of a city in Ireland.

One can only dream of being as cool as this guy!

M1 Actor who stars alongside his longtime real-life friend Patrick Stewart in several films in the X-Men franchise

M2 British actor who was named People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2018, five years before Patrick Dempsey earned the title

M3 Actor who plays FBI Agent Johnny Utah opposite Patrick Swayze’s Bodhi in the 1991 film Point Break

M4 Basketball player who played at Duke and was the only amateur on the 1992 U.S. Olympic “Dream Team,” where he played alongside Patrick Ewing

Missed #4.

Round Two

5 Holidays – Beltane, the Gaelic festival that celebrates the beginning of summer, is traditionally observed on the first day of which month that falls entirely during spring in the Northern Hemisphere? FB clue.

6 TV Shows – What sitcom, which aired from 2018-2022, is set in Northern Ireland and features main characters named Erin, Orla, Clare and Michelle, who make up most of the title group? We had zero clue, so we put in a joke guess of “Never Sunny in Belfast.” Now I’m trying to imagine what that series would be like!  Would the Irish Charlie Day also be a high talker only with a brogue? Would that make him sound like a leprechaun? 😂

7 Sweet Treats – What is the name of the green mint-flavored milkshake offered by McDonald’s ahead of St. Patrick’s Day?

8 Parades – Ireland’s first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in 1903 in what city, which is also known for its crystal?

Mystery Round Two – Irish Folk Songs

Name the Irish folk song based on the given lyrics.

Options: Rocky Road to Dublin, the Wild Rover, Finnegan’s Wake, and Whiskey in the Jar

M1 I’ve spent all me money on whiskey and beer; but now I’m returning with gold in great store

M2 As I was goin’ over the farm-famed Kerry Mountains, I met with Captain Farrell and his money he was counting

M3 Then off the reap the corn and leave where I was born

M4 A gentle Irishman, mighty off; he’d a beautiful brogue so rich and sweet

We only got one of these correct.

We were in third with 40 points out of eight teams going into the final behind survivor: north sentinel island and weapons and chaos; 46; and smartyshorts, who had 51 points in first.

Final Question Category – Authors

Four Irish-born authors have won the Nobel Prize in Literature, doing so in 1923, 1925, 1969 and 1995. Name any one of those four authors.
survivor north sentinel island finished first with 61, 212 finished with 52 in second. We finished in sixth.

Game Two/Round Three

9 Slogans – What restaurant chain primarily used the slogan “Have it Your Way” from 1974-2014?

NERD POINT: In 2022, this restaurant introduced what two-word slogan?

Got both parts correct.

10 Hall of Famers – What seven-foot-six center from China became the first player born in the 1980s to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame when he was inducted in 2016 at the age of 35? We could picture this tall fella could not remember his name, miss.

11 Laws – A member of the Tlingit nation, Elizabeth Peratrovich is credited as being instrumental in the passing of the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945 in which U.S. state? We were not the only team thrown off by this. The correct answer is a state that wasn’t a state yet in 1945, so we ruled it out. 😢

12 Played by Renee O’Connor, Gabrielle is the sidekick and loyal companion of what title character on a series that aired from 1995-2001?

Mystery Round Three – This was visual, and I didn’t capture a good picture or have the URL for this, so you will all just have to imagine what this mystery round asked about! There was a photo of Mexican pyramids and of Machu Pichu!

Round Four

13 Film Plots – What 2013 Academy Award nominated film starring Christian Bale and Amy Adams features a dramatization of Abscam, a 1970s and 1980s FBI string operation that resulted in the criminal convictions of more than 30 politicians for accepting bribes? Apparently this movie wasn’t memorable enough for us, miss. Funny, I watched another Christian Bale movie, American Psycho, earlier this day (hint, this movie for the question also has the word “American” in it too).

14 Cells – The dendrites, the soma and the axon are the three main parts of what kind of cell? The word “dendrites” made me think of “dendrology,” sonl we went with “plant,” which was incorrect 😢 🌲 having another note sciency person helping us would have been great!

15 Tours – In February 2026, what artist heard in the following clip announced that she will be embarking on the Lucky Me tour beginning in June? I don’t have the audio clip so… “Lucky Me” is your clue here. We weren’t so lucky!

16 Language – Which day of the week is called “lundi” in French and “lunes” in Spanish?

Mystery Round Four – Food Tech

The correct answer to each technology-related question is a food term.

M1 Source code that is convoluted, hard to debug and poorly structured and is frequently described by referencing what carb-heavy food?

M2 What term for a chopped dish of corned beef, potatoes, and onions lends its name to a computing method that turns a program’s contents into a single value to check that it hasn’t been changed?

M3 What controversial browser extension with a sweet-sounding name, now owned by PayPal, was created in 2012 to automatically apply coupon codes to online purchases?

M4 In cooking it means to brown food through heat, but in technology what term describes small, brief non-intrusive pop-up notifications commonly encountered on smartphones?

Got all of these (this was mostly Mike).

We were in seventh out of eight teams heading into the final with 33 points, team slainte was in first with 48, stiff tutu was in second with 46.

Final Question Category – Pixar Films

From 1995-2011, Pixar Animation Studios released 12-feature length films, ten of which are rated G by the MPa. Name one of the two Pixar films released during this time frame that are not rated G.

We got this and finished just shy of the prize zone in third with 48 points.

This most likely concludes our trivial pursuits for the week.

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Keanu Reeves!
