The things we do for trivia, right?
It was one of those rare nights where we had to “perform” on a Sporcle Events music quiz night. And there we were without our “lead singer” Kim.
We also didn’t have our lead guitarist Amy – cçand also didn’t have Evelyn (she’ll have to tell me what instrument she plays besides her cool LED-lit crochet hooks lol).
Believe me, Kim loves music quiz games so much, that it’s really rare when she has to miss a game. In this case, it was a “family affair.” This is a hint for an answer later on that I will end up just giving away anyway! Read on for more about that.

So it was “Just the Two of Us” for the most recent music quiz battle which we valiantly marched into 😄 The “B-Squad” was called off the bench! 😲
The two of us are knowledgeable about certain eras and genres of music, but not great at spotting most modern songs. You know, songs that are 30 years old or newer! 😂
I don’t normally provide so much detail in these music quiz recaps, but…the things we do for trivia – and our friends, right? 👍
I knew that Kim would probably want a detailed report of the game that she had to miss, so let’s call this a “long distance dedication” for her!
Anyone old enough to remember those from Casey Kasem Top 40 broadcasts? I used to write down all of the songs when I was a kid 😅 🤓

In keeping with the music references, we picked up a free agent “session musician” in game two (more details if you read on).
We managed to tread water in this shipwreck of a game, but no prizes for us. That bench was really warm and toasty by the time the games were done! 💯👍
Small victories?
On to the questions No answers, the questions are all multi-tiered and I am giving lots of hints, so just be like us when we played this doomed game and do your best to figure out the answers! 🤓
Game One
Round One
Pop Punk – Song was thankfully something that I recognized, female Canadian singer with an oddly spelled first name singing about a boy she likes who either likes skateboarding or roller skating (I’m not gonna ask her which). Hey we all have a type, don’t we? 😉

Max points on first question besides nerd point? Yes please 🙏 😊
Girl Groups – 80s girl group led by Belinda Carlisle with a rhyming name and a string of hits, this song implies that they’ll keep your secret for you. Had to also name the album title that had this song, that with one letter removed, shares name with 1991 animated Disney film.

Good start to the game, got the first two correct for max points (except nerd point on first one).
Soul – Played a Motown classic using the words “Ain’t Too” in its title. As we almost always do, we picked the wrong group out of two choices. Also barely missed nerd point asking which year this song came out.
Indie Folk – miss, miss, miss on this one. Song about a place in nature where one might seek shelter from storms. Also missed how many members this band had for most of its tenure. We put in “Suspenders and Bowties” as our guess for the song title, guessed Lumineers for the artist, not nope, it’s the band with the “sons.”
First mystery round was easy for us. Played four songs, had to say whether they were OGs or covers.
M1 Hallelujah (did not recognize the artist that was played), so how about saying that it was another artist who performed this – the tragic hottie Jeff Buckley 🥰

M2 Poker Face, Lady Gaga
M3 I think We’re Alone Now, Tiffany
M4 I will Always Live You, Whitney Houston
Got all of these.
Round Two
New Hits – Miss, miss, miss. Some Bruno Mars song we thought was Flo Rida, also missed nerd point asking which big event he performed at:

Movie Songs – Played a 1978 hit by Four Seasons singer doing things solo – singing about doing cleanup at a fast food restaurant after closing (specifically the deep fryers). JK! Obsessively says that the thing he cleans from the fryers is “the word” throughout the whole song. Hey to each their own – everyone needs a hobby 😂
Nerd point asked which “Baby I Love Your Way” singer supplies guitar on this song. Hit all of these things correct.
Notable thing about this singer – he does not use his trademark falsetto in this song – and interestingly enough, the songwriter Barry Gibb is another singer best known for his use of falsetto as well! I hear tell he is still “Stayin’ Alive” while his three younger brothers are all dead. The youngest brother Andy, who had his own solo career, died the earliest.
2020s Pop – Ugh can we not? 😂😩 Blonde singer who got her start on Girl Meets World sang this one. We incorrectly guessed Selena Gomez and Wizards of Waverly Place for series in which she got her start. I tried! Needed Kim’s youngest daughter here!
Rock Bands – played a song by band whose members used to play under another name in the early 90s – until the original singer’s death by suicide – has recently become controversial. Song mentions both a tool and an animal, which describes a word meaning to screw up plans. Missed nerd point for not reading the question thoroughly. Who’s the🐒🔧 now? 😂
Mystery Round Two
Single Word Songs
Didn’t recognize the first two at all, first was Usher song with what I would enthusiastically say if you asked me if I wanted a Twix or Kit Kat candy bar 😋, the second title is a camera part starting with “A” and was by Harry Styles.
Third one was the totally false “Thunder only happens when it’s raining” song by Fleetwood Mac, fourth was a Roxette song about a pointless drive with no destination.

Got the last two.
We used the name Meth Lab for Cutie (stolen from a meme I saw last week that I really wish I could say I made it up 😂).
Apparently there is a league team using this name in the Sporcleverse? Found this out while signing into the game. I see you!
We were in ninth going into the final. The frequently and very loudly cheering ten-person Marvin Gayme team was not surprisingly in first with 64 points, Jonah was in second with 63 and Left if the Dial was in third with 61.
We stupidly bet it all in the category of Classic Rock Intros:

Songs played were Paint it Black, Baba O’Reilly, Sweet Emotion and Whole Lotta Love.
We picked up an “orphan” to help us in game two! Kevin E., who very ballsily (yes I’m using that word I just made up) showed up last week to play a music quiz game solo, and we wound up chatting with him after the game. He played with the team Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender for game one, they only had one playa show up (communication breakdown, like that other Led Zeppelin song says).
Our condolences to Jeff M. from Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender on the loss of his grandmother 😔 🙏
Deaths in the family are among the saddest reasons to miss trivia! We’ve had to do this a couple of times as well. 😢
We very gladly accepted his help for game two – and boy oh boy – helped he did! 😁
On to game two…
Game Two
Round Three

Pop Stars – Our helper Kevin came out swinging and helped us with spotting this song about a magical creature who grants wishes by a singer with a Latin last name beginning with “A.”
Trust me, do not allow these magical beings to grant wishes for you – they cannot be trusted to not twist your words and turn your wishes into something that ends up destroying you and everything you love. Ahem…
That being said…
We couldn’t think of any other hit songs of hers for the nerd point, so I put in “Bare Midriffs and Body Shots” for a joke answer. Good song for a Natalee Holloway biopic? 🤔🤨 Too soon?
Music Legends – Blue suede shoes wearing singer songs about providing soundtrack while incarcerated. Nerd point asked about name of 13 acre estate he bought in the 1950s. Points all around for everyone! 😃
Country Artists – Nope, nope, nope. Correct song was by guy we never heard of named Sam Hunt where he colorfully describes a body in a way that would make me slap him if he said it to me 😂
“What – you saying I have potholes and roadside trash on my body? Maybe some roadkill and red Solo cups on the side of the road filled with lord knows what? 🤮”
Is that just me? Am I missing the romantic gesture of that song title like I typically do? 😂
Host liked my joke answer for song title “Red Solo Cups and Walmart Bathroom Sex.”
Go ahead and try to not imagine that image! I dare you!
We all got a type when it comes to music, and cuntry music… ain’t mine! 😩 Not correcting the spelling!
1990s Hip Hop – Our helper Kevin came out swinging again by recognizing the artist who sang a song about a dead member of NWA that shares its name with a bad Britney Spears film (are there good ones? 🤔)
I’ll stop picking on Britney. She has enough problems right now 🍺 🚗 🚨
I was able to name the dead guy, amazingly enough. We couldn’t think of the song title, so I got creative again and out in “I Love East Compton” as our guess.
Mystery Round Three
Had to name artists who had songs with the word “time” in their titles.

M1 – Good Riddance band
M2 Time for me to Fly band
M3 Time After Time singer
M4 Some song by Pitbull that I didn’t spot (you guys can figure it out if you want).
I learned recently that the “Time for me to Fly” band had some psychedelic songs early in their career. I actually enjoyed learning that – and listening to their song “Golden Country!”
Round Four
2020s Hits – Helper Kevin stepped in for his hat trick here by recognizing singer whose name always makes us think about hairs around the eyeballs that are not brows. Could not name correct song, so I said “Song To Slit One’s Wrist To.” The correct song was “Lunch” and for nerd point had to name what NBC sitcom she quotes dialogue for in this song. That was a nope for us.
Speaking of nope – we get a category we actually had a chance with coming up next and we’re gonna totally blow it (spoiler). 😩
1970s Funk – Song they played shares its name with a sitcom airing from 1966-1971.
What that’s not enough of a hint?

OK, the singer shared his given name with a sassy black and white cartoon cat (though he was known by a three letter nickname) and he died last year. His group also did a very awesome bluesy cover that you all should totally listen to right now of Doris Day’s “Que Sera, Sera” which plays in the end credits of the 1988 black comedy film Heathers.

Oh OK! I’m feeling generous and I’ll just give this one to y’all. Sly and the Family Stone, Family Affair. Nerd point was what year within five was this band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We missed all of this question, had they played the cover they did of Que Sera Sera, I would have known it 😢
Barely missed nerd point 😞
O Canada – If you all are like me, you have a short list of Canadian music artists that you know. Neil Young, Alanis, the woman from question #1, Corey Hart, Bieber, Buble, Shania, Celine, Arcade Fire, Joni Mitchell, Bryan Adams and lastly, that really lame 90s-2000s band that your friends probably make fun of you for liking, even though they probably secretly listen to it on full blast in their cars anyway 😂
It starts with “N?”
Our helper stepped in for a fourth time and helped name the artist, but we couldn’t name the song, or know the nerd point asking which food chain name inspired their name.
Soft Rock – I was so hoping for Christopher Cross here but again, I was disappointed. But I still managed to recognize the band that made some lame baby-making hits in the early 80s.
The band’s name is also something that can run short on missions in spacecrafts or submarines, or can be cut off from a person by applying duct tape to their mouth and nose (seriously don’t actually do that to anyone I do not endorse such behavior, though if you listen to enough music by this band, it might make you want to do this to yourself – or others 😂).
Their song mentions being “all out of” something commonly described as affectionate or intimate that rhymes with this:

Nerd point had to name which country the band was from.
Don’t you just love it when you know things about songs you hate? Good way to end this regular round.
Mystery Round Four –
Mixing Colors
They played two songs for each question here, both of which have colors in their titles, that when combined, make another color – had to name the combined color.
I didn’t get down all of the songs, but here were some of them:
99 Luftballons/Yellow, Big Yellow Taxi/Some Song with blue in the title, White Room and some among with red in the title.
We got three correct.
We were in sixth going into the final with 52 points. The same teams were in the top three spots as were in game one (Left of the Dial, Jonah, Marvin Gayme).
We bet zero on the category of “featured rappers,” didn’t get the question down. Still we vainly guessed Timbaland.
We still remain number two 💩 in the bar standings.
We’ll hopefully get our “lead singer” back for our next game Monday! And maybe a backup dancer or two!
As always Go Pods, Sparty On, and stay classy, Li’l Wayne!
