Trivia Recap – Game #879 – January 26, 2026  – Corner Brewery – Sporcle Events Music Quiz

We were way too sexy for music trivia in our most recent music quiz game! I mean…

TWO sixty-nine point games? Yes really!

In addition to our love of music trivia being in the air that night like some sort of Phil Collins (or was it Genesis) song, some of the questions were “sort of” about love, too. At least if you knew where to look!

First, let’s talk about that Paula Abdul video where she wears PG-13 BDSM gear! How cute was she in this video?

Paula Abdul in the “Cold Hearted” video, which was inspired by the Bob Fosse musical All That Jazz.

Note: This is just a general recap, not a question for question recap like I usually post here. Do your best to figure out answers to the sampling of questions I’m sharing here!

All of that said…

The 80s was a time when a lot of love letters were written via hit songs! Paula Abdul wrote a love letter late choreographer Bob Fosse through her video for “Cold Hearted.”

Maybe it wasn’t romantic love (or WAS it 🤔), but a mutual love for the dance art form that Paula Abdul would have likely shared with Fosse, who died in 1987.

They were both choreographers, after all! Did any of you know that Abdul provided choreography in the original 1987 Running Man movie?

While we’re on the topic of this awesome sci-fi 80s movie with colorful skintight spandex jumpsuits – one of which was worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger, did you also know that the director was Paul  Michael Glaser, who was one half of “Starsky and Hutch?” He was Starsky!

As for more romantic love letters told through song, Madonna’s “True Blue” album has been described as a love letter to Sean Penn, whom she was married to longer than Cher was married to Gregg Allmann, though not as long as Jamie Lee Curtis has been married to filmmaker and actor Christopher Guest. Their marriage went WAY past eleven! Some of you might get this “Spinal Tap” reference!

They have been married since 1984!  😲 😳 I read a recent interview with her, she says that the polar oppositeness of her and Christopher Guest is a big reason they have been together as long as they have. Hey – whatever works, right?

We had trivia questions about both “Cold Hearted” by Paula Abdul and a final question involving the Madonna song “Papa Don’t Preach.”

I know this is going to sound like my own love letter to Madonna (guilty), but am I the only one who thought that her short platinum blonde ‘do she had in that video was just… adorable?! 🥰

I also liked it when she dyed her hair black for “Like a Prayer!”

Yes, I was a pretty big Madonna fan in the ’80s!

As for our game, we finished with not one but TWO very sexy scores of 69 points! We finished first overall for the night, and won a first and second place prize.

As always, we had a good mix of categories – 90 percent or more that gave me ample time for napping!

Electropop, 2000s R&B, ’60s Swing, Pop Groups, Pop Rock (not to be confused with that noisy candy that makes popping noises in your mouth), New Wave, Rock Bands, 2010s Rock, ’80s Dance, Synth Pop, Classic Hits, 2010s Hip Hop, Disco, One Hit Wonders and Acoustic Rock were our categories for this night. This might be a good time for taking a breath if you’re reading this blog out loud to help put your kids to sleep! 😂

I’m not usually much of a “heavy lifting” player on music quiz nights. I’m a session musician at best, not a lead singer, lead guitarist or chief accordionist. 🪗

They may call me occasionally if they need a triangle solo or something.

Hmm, I wonder which famous music stars got their start as session musicians? That may be something to explore! Peter Gabriel was a hired gun as a flute player for Cat Stevens on his 1970 album “Mona Bone Jakon,” for example. Yes as the name suggests, it’s really about (well, I’m not gonna say 😉 🍆).  Also Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones got their starts as session musicians, too.

Truth be told, Kim and her friends Amy and Evelyn (and occasionally Amy’s daughter) handle answering a majority of the questions without any help from me. I’m basically there to step in when the questions skew just a tad “old” or “goth”  for them! I’m the one who has to know the difference between Depeche – Mode and The Smiths!

Truth! RIP Catherine O’Hara! 😔  She appeared in some Christopher Guest (aka Mr. Jamie Lee Curtis) films during her career.

I was called up to bat when they asked about which of the singing Gibb brothers was the oldest (ironically he’s also the last one still living, and the youngest of those brothers, Andy, died first in the 1980s).

A scene from the 1999 comic book film Mystery Men. I like to use this quote occasionally!

So yeah, they *occasionally* have to nudge me awake for help with some random music questions!

Amy and I teamed up well when they played a song by a duo made of Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet. Later, Clarke would “move out” of that duo (see what I did there) and form another duo with singer Andy Bell, and even recorded an album of Abba covers called “Abbaesque.” Which I loved in college 💕

Our game one final asked us to identify the singer – out of four choices – who uses their real name as a stage name.

We heard songs by Kim’s #1 favorite singer John Denver (JK his music actually makes her very stabby, which means whenever they play John Denver songs in music trivia, we sing along to it really loud 😂), Dua Lipa, George Michael and Jamie Foxx. We were able to pick the right person.

I really got to step up to bat for the final question in game two, which asked about songs tipping charts at the ending of their respective decades.

The trivia host Phil played songs by Rupert Holmes (Escape), Aerosmith (Don’t Want to Miss a Thing), Blinding Lights by The Weeknd, and Madonna’s song Papa Don’t Preach.

We were able to eliminate the Aerosmith song because Kim knew that another song topped the charts in the end of the 1990s. I knew the Madonna song was released too early to be an “end of a decade” song.

But what I also knew was when the Rupert Holmes song was released (yay I’m old).

I guess we were the only ones getting this one correct!

Yup, moods were good all around!

This almost made up for us having the audacity to not be able to tell the difference between Dean Martin and the legendary “Chairman of the Board!” Uh, that’s Frank Sinatra… 😬 Glad he’s been dead since 1998, or else he and his “Rat Pack” might give us kicks in the head (like the song says, for the record I don’t endorse this type of violence)! We’d totally deserve it 😂 I call shotgun on getting kicked in the head by  Sammy Davis Junior!

We also hung our heads in shame for  confusing Buddy Holly for Elvis Costello 😂 🙄

To be fair, didn’t Elvis Costello kind of steal Buddy Holly’s vibe and look? 🤔 Also to be fair, we did put down the whole name “Elvis Costello and the Attractions.” We thought we were SO smart for that!

I have another trivia recap to write, so I’m a gonna wrap this up.

Maybe we’ll see some of YOU at our next music quiz game 🎵🎶

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Smashmouth! We totally did not know that one of your songs was a love letter for the theme song from “Goldfinger!”
