I’m a mature person whom is “fairly” skilled at adulting. I’m not a spoiled bitch who insists upon having everything that I want – when I want it. Well, at least sometimes π₯Ί π I’m… realistic!
Most importantly, I know how competitive it can be to book sites for summer camping trips in Michigan State Parks! I know that like the Rolling Stones song says, “You can’t always get…what you want.”
That being said…
I booked a cabin for a late July cabin trip in a Michigan state park this morning! I didn’t get the first choice that I wanted, but I will be able to check at least a couple of things off my “recreation goals” checklist that I posted here a couple of weeks ago.
Among these “goals” I outlined included camping in a park that we have not camped in before – or haven’t stayed in for at least 15 years or more – and doing a camping trip during a full moon event.Β
In this case, this campground – Petoskey State Park – has the very first campground that my husband and I stayed in when we wereΒ “barely legal” (21) in the early 1990s and were on our very first camping trip together! βΊ π
It’s been more than 30 years since we’ve done a camping trip at Petoskey!

Our rental cabin has electricity and lighting, but not much else. But… that’s OK!
I’ve seen reviews that tell me that the Petoskey cabins have microwaves and mini fridges, but I’ll definitely confirm amenities with park staff before we make our trip and adapt accordingly.
We’re both very adaptable to all types of camping situations – backpacking, rustic, modern, tent camping, walk up…you name it, we’ve done it! We even rented a “safari tent” for an overnight three years ago and did some “glamping.”
My bare minimum requirement for camping is that there must be at least a vault toilet/outhouse available for potty breaks. I do NOT like digging “catholes!”
I’m just glad we’ll have electricity, because in July, I’ll definitely want electric (and USB powered) fans to help cool things off in the cabin if it’s hot!
Let’s face it. We’ve become a society where one pretty much needs a smart phone to exist properly. And those phones need juice! Power banks have their limitations.
I can do without electricity for 2-3 nights just fine, mind you. I’m just glad that I don’t have to for this trip.
The sandy beach located in this park is fantastic, and will provide another means of cooling off on warmer days. My husband loves to π₯½ I’ll get into the water too if conditions are just right (call me Goldilocks) and I’m hot enough. Mostly I’m content to sit in my own shady spot (with an umbrella) and be an observer of things at the beach. Nothing relaxes me more than just staring at the water. And occasionally, seeing other people enjoying the water!
I’ll be trying to book a cabin trip during the “flower moon” event in May, too. It won’t be as competitive to get a good cabin for that time slot!
We still have firewood stored in my parent’s garage from our last cabin trip – which sadly had to be canceled when I was in a local ER! π
We were able to get most of our money back for that trip, but beginning May 26, 2026, cancellation policies will become more strict, especially for last minute changes and cancellations. Campers will need to make changes and cancellations within 31 days (don’t quote me on this) or possibly lose it all plus their $10 reservation fees.
Here’s hoping that no medical emergencies ruin our next trip! π
