Wow, what an exciting week of trivial pursuits it was for us last week!
I’m going to “attempt” to do mini recaps of our music quiz games starting in 2026. They will be extremely abbreviated “highlights” things, not question for question recaps like I do for general knowledge trivia games.
Audio based trivia games are not ideal for those kinds of recaps. That said…
Last week, we had a couple of really close music quiz games! Our team’s “lead singer” Kim nailed a final question about which song was the basis for study by the German guy (Karlheinz Brandenburg, seriously how cool of a name is this) who first developed the audio format Mp3 in 1995.
I know that some music enthusiasts like to talk about how vinyl has a “warm” sound and all of that. Fair enough. I’m sure you’re right. And it’s much more romantic to put on some records and play baby making jams than it is to hook up your phone to a Bluetooth speaker with the vain hopes that it will pair properly! I just don’t trust Bluetooth. Gimme wires – they’re much more reliable (I digress)!
I LOVE compressed digital audio formats! Being able to cram thousands of songs on a thumb drive to play in my car? Yes please! Also playing records is so… limiting. You can’t skip tracks easily, it’s difficult to play particular tracks, you might bump the record if you like dancing to the music and you can’t fast forward or rewind…
Yes I know records make cool sounds when you do that scratch thing that DJs like to do. Like this guy…

Apparently, Brandenburg used a certain song as a basis for testing the clarity of his spanking new compressed digital audio format. So they played four songs and we had to pick the right one.
In a big stroke of luck that Kim probably loves when she visits a local casino (lol), she knew this answer before they gave us our choices. I guess this was something that she read at one point. So all we had to do was…wait.
The tricky part was, they didn’t play the actual song that Brandenburg used, but songs containing SAMPLES of the song. Our teammate Amy was on the ball when she heard the right song (covered by Fallout Boy), so we…nailed it!
Another team called Marvin Gayme was tied with us, they asked the number of seconds long the song Tom’s Diner was, we lost, so only a $10 prize. 😢
Send your sympathy cards to us care of this address (lol)!
We didn’t do so hot in game two, we finished third – out of only four teams playing!
We’ll be doing another music quiz game Monday, and if weather, my work schedule and energy levels allow, we’ll play another general knowledge game later in the week.
That’s all that I have to report for now! See some of you guys at the next trivia battle! 😉
