Has Anyone Bothered to Look at the Grinch’s Side of the Story?

Little is known of this iconic holiday character’s back story.

I thought to myself earlier while out doing last minute holiday errands…

“Why hasn’t anyone given the “Wicked” treatment to “How the Grinch Stole Christmas?”

You know – presenting the story from his point of view? Making him like the wicked witch character in “Wicked?”

Just to get this out of the way, yes he violated the law by breaking into the Who’s homes, stealing their stuff and making off with their stuff. It’s grand theft larceny. This puts the moral compass in the Whos’ favor. Yeah yeah…

In the Grinch’s defense however, this is a world where extreme forms of behavior seem to be the norm. The Whovillians can’t seem to do anything in any fashion that isn’t “extra.” It only makes sense that the Grinch would behave in a similar fashion by using larceny as a means of making a statement. Subtlety isn’t a “thing” in the Dr. Seuss universe.

Grinch clearly expresses how fed up he was with the noise levels of the Whoville residents.

Yes Grinch – we hear ya –  even if the Whos cannot!

Clearly the Whos are like the Griswold family when it comes to celebrating the holidays. If you’ve gotta do it, overdo it! Maybe Grinch thinks they’re getting into his face with how ostentatiously and noisily they celebrate the holidays.

We don’t know if The Grinch moved out of Whoville because of the Whovillians or if he was on his lonely mountain first – with the Whos moving into the valley later. We really don’t know much about the Grinch at all.

What we can surmise is this – something drove him to choose a life of isolation on that mountain. Something traumatic must have happened to him in his childhood to cause him to exhibit angry and abusive behavior towards those close to him.

Poor, poor Max the dog having to live in the Grinch’s orbit!

In the end, Grinch’s heart grows three times bigger, no one seems to be alarmed by this obvious medical emergency and yay everyone is happy.

Yet nothing was solved. The Whos agree to look the other way on the Grinch’s grand larceny, and Grinch decides that maybe a cup or two or three or a baker’s dozen cups of spiked egg nog is pretty darn tasty after all.

Moral of this story? You’d better get on board with holiday cheer – or be an angry outcast.

While I’m not totally on Team Grinch, I understand his point of view! Let everyone celebrate – or not celebrate – the holidays in whatever fashion they choose!

If your celebration of the holidays level is at 10 or higher, consider putting away those air inflated lawn ornaments, sell that heavy handed Nativity scene or maybe take down a string –  or three of lights! Look at your holiday display, turn around and look at it again. If something appears to be too “extra” make it disappear!
