Checked Out a New Old Trivia Spot Tonight

Don’t you just love it when a restaurant sign describes the fare that they serve? πŸ€”

We paid a visit to a trivia spot tonight that we haven’t played for at least 12 years. Red Rock Barbecue in Ypsilanti, MI stopped offering trivia sometime after that – and now –  trivia is back on the menu!

I’ll post a full recap of this trivia game within the next 24 hours…

A few people from my team might remember when we hung out after a Red Rock game in November, 2012 to watch election returns on TV!

There haven’t been too many other Tuesday options for trivia in Ypsi for a while. McShane’s has had a Tuesday night trivia scene in the My Trivia Live league for years, but Sporcle options for trivia have not been an option since before the pandemic.

Cultivate Coffee and Tap House previously had a Sporcle trivia scene that was staged in an outdoor tent heated by propane heaters in cold weather, but the city ordered them to ditch the tent – and Cultivate closed shortly afterwards.

Tower Inn may have had a Tuesday trivia night in the pre-pandemic years, I recall playing there under both the MTL and Sporcle banners  2018-2020, though those trivia nights did not last very long.

Now Tower Inn is called Basil Babe and does not offer trivia.

This recent visit to Red Rock was a “scouting” mission for  my husband and I. We plan to bring a team here to play soon, but I wanted to test it out first by looking at seating arrangements, bar layout, the drink menu, prize restrictions (if any), etc.

Boy am I glad that I did that!

Good news –  trivia prizes are no longer restricted to food only at this bar like they were in the past. πŸ˜…

There is bar seating, several tables that will accommodate 4-5 players (depending upon how cozy you like your seating arrangements), and tables for larger parties of roughly 7-8.

Tables that seat 4-5 people

There is both “high top” and low top seating. I happen to know players whom are very particular about how they like bar seating to be. Like a late 90s gal, some people like their bar seating like late 90s jeans waistbands – low!  πŸ˜‰

I was still in my 20s when this fashion fad hit, but…it was a “nope” for me!

Prizes are given out digitally to whichever person gives their cell phone number and can be redeemed with their phones (the following week or just not on the same day) via a QR code.

This is similar to how Tower Inn used to dole out their trivia prizes before the pandemic.

It’s strange – but I guess it will work? We’ll see next time we visit!

We won two first place prizes in the game, which is a SUREFIRE sign that it’s a new trivia night – and it needs some competition! πŸ˜‚

Only a handful of teams showed up for the most recent trivia night, which was its second trivia night. The host is Sherlyn, who also hosts at Water Tower Distillery just around the corner on Monday nights.

The food menu is barbecue fare. I  don’t tend to eat very often during trivia games, so I am not the person to give a review of food! Or alcoholic drinks (I’m not partaking of those at the moment).

Drink offerings are decent – drinkers have a choice of draft beers (most $6-$7 bucks lol I said 6 7!) and ciders, and a choice of various crafted traditional cocktails.

If you prefer your drinks at a discount, visit during happy hours daily between 4-6 p.m. or 10-11 p.m. weekends.

I was a real party animal and had a…

Ginger beer (non alcoholic)! This one is from “Down Under.” Ginger beer is a good choice if you’re not drinking but want something more interesting than traditional pop (or “soda” or “Coke,” depending upon where you’re from).

Trivia games are 7 p.m. Tuesday nights. Street parking is available, or off site parking is available a short distance away.
