Trivia Recap – September 18, 2025 – McShane’s Pub – My Trivia Live – Ypsilanti, MI

We initially kind of hemmed and hawed about whether we wanted to go out for a trivia game on a recent warm Thursday evening – or stay home in our air conditioned house.

You want to take a guess what we ultimately decided to do? 🤔

It was just my husband Mike and I waging the trivia battle on this night. It was the first week of the new My Trivia Live season, and we noticed some…changes! Some temporary, some possibly permanent?

A temporary change was that the regular host Stacy was absent. She was just on a well deserved vacation, from what we hear!

Secondly, team “Pants” was playing. We have never seen them play on Thursday nights, so maybe we’ll be waging more trivia battles against them in the coming season – just like in the old days at the Wurst Bar!

We were roughed up a bit by the regular round questions, but somehow managed to get the final question correct, wager just the right amount to be in a tiebreaker (which we won) and win a $20 second place prize!

I hope that a couple of the teams that normally play Thursday whom were MIA on Thursdays wind up coming back! We would never like our trivia nights to be TOO easy, now would we?

We were not sitting in the normal spot that we like to play, and we had some difficulty hearing the questions. So they will be very, very abbreviated! I’ll do my best to recreate them with the aid of Google searches.

Round One

Meteorology – From what sky-borne object does rain originate?

Candy – What sweet treat is inside the hard candy shell of a Blow Pop?

Fun With Words – What word for a knife attack, spelled backwards, shares its name with an animal associated with Count Dracula?

Round Two

TV Tech – What do the letters CC stand for on a TV menu?

Finish the Lyrics – Finish the Eagles lyrics “Plenty of room at the (BLANK)?”

90s Slang – What 90s slang term mentioning a vending machine staple is added upon the phrase “All That?”

Round Three

Telecom – What Finnish telecommunications company acquired Symbian in 2008?

I could not find the right meme to go with this question, but this movie helped me come up with the correct answer!

Trivia Math – What number do you get when you add the last four digits in a Tommy Tutone song title and subtract the first three digits in the title? We missed this, just because we didn’t didn’t quite understand the question. These things happen in trivia games, but clearly we needed math teacher Kim to help us here 😂

American History – What was the most common occupation listed in the 1940 Census?

Halftime – The Federal Budget

According to USAspending dot gov, what four cabinet level departments have the highest budgetary resources?

We only got two of these correct. I wanted to put “Defense” down four times considering the state of our current administration 😕

Halftime scores:

Papa, 18; Cheboygan, 19; Pods, 26; Titanic Swim Team, 27; Dorks/Pursuit of O Snappiness, 29; Spacecats, 30; Ypsi Starlings Rugby, 30; Pants, 32 and Keeping up with the Joneses, 33.

Round Four

Authors – What American suspense writer created the character Christopher Snow? We discussed the names of a few different authors, including the correct one. But putting down the correct guy would not be “on brand” for us! Miss…

Annual Events – “Beauty and the Broken” won best in show at an event dedicated to what comforing creative art in August, 2025? We put down “axe throwing” as a guess out of desperation, since that is a creative art that would be comforting to us! Maybe it was the recent drive through Westland that made me see the new axe throwing entertainment place that opened there?

No, axe throwing was not correct!

Shopping – The Fanatics company owns what mall store that specializes in head gear? This is heavily abbreviated.

Round Five

TV Shows – Emil Wakim joins Brooks Whelan and Luke Null as single season cast members of what long running NBC program?

Animals – Since they’re disoriented, Iclanders throw what animal off a clif to help the young animals along? Miss.

Medicine – A resting heart rate above 150 beats per minute is described as what 11 letter word?We used our “freebie” answer to avoid having to correctly answer this one.

Round Six

Linguistics – What symbol resembling an upside down letter V is derived from the latin as “It lacks?”

Villains – Colin Farrell and Danny DeVito both played what movie villains 30 years apart?

Adjectives – What word describes a diet composed solely of meat?

Scores heading into the final:

Cheboygan, 19; Papa, 26; Titanic Swim Team, 49; Pods, 52; Pants, 58; Pursuit of O Snappiness, 58; Spacecats, 60; Dorks, 61; Ypsi Starlings Rugby, 64 and Keeping up with the Joneses, 69.

Final Category – Geography

Mount Popomanaseu is the highest point and the Mbokokimbo River is the longest river on what island that was the site of a pivotal battle in World War 2?

It’s not every trivia game where the first thing you think of for a final question answer winds up being the right thing!

It’s also not every trivia game where two different trivia teams with two different scores heading into the final – us with 52 points – and Spacecats – with 60 points – wind up in a tiebreaker! Apparently both of our teams wagered to try winning by one point if the top team missed it?

I’ve said before that trivia games can be like chess games, and this game was no exception!

What we didn’t count on was the third place team – Dorks – betting it all and getting it correct.

For our tiebreaker, we had to answer how many calories are in a Blow Pop. Our guess of 180 calories was closest to the correct answer of 70 calories, so we won second place.

Game winners – Spacecats, 70, Pods, 70 and Dorks, 122.

That’s it for our trivial pursuits for the week. We’ll be hitting up a Sporcle Events music quiz game next week.

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Dean Koontz!
