Trivia Recap – July 29, 2025 – McShane’s Pub – My Trivia Live – Ypsilanti, MI

Scroll to the end for the answers..

We were at the bottom of the scores heap on a recent Tuesday trivia night at McShane’s Pub!

It’s not the outcome we wanted, but with only two of us on a very competitive night with ONLY league teams?

We’re just glad that we escaped with more than 50 total points (56)!

Only one team managed to get the final question correct, shout out to the ironically named team We Were Never Here. Strangely, they seem to be “here” nearly every Tuesday, despite their name 🤔

Don’t mind me, I’m occasionally too literal minded for my own good!

Scores remain tight among the top non-barhop teams, we’re just barely in third place – just a few points behind the second place team. To think we recently managed to be ahead of them for a minute!

Trivia scores here are like like Michigan weather…wait!

We usually prefer to play Thursdays, but since we’re going to be checking out My Trivia Live’s debut “Face the Music” show 7:30 PM Thursday, July 31 at E.G. Nick’s in Plymouth that night, we had to switch things up this week.

This will be our first “Face the Music” game we’ve played together since before the plague! Though Kim S., my occasional “trivia pardner,” did recently play solo at a MTL music trivia game in the bustling town of Flint, MI!

She won a second place/$30 prize. There is talk of returning soon to New Jester’s to play another music trivia game with some backup. I’d like to hope that I could not only help with maybe a question or two (especially if it’s 70s music), but I know the roads fairly well, so I could be a backup for a GPS too!

I’m not a big fan of using GPS, I must have issues with computerized voices telling me where to go or something?

We all have issues!

She told me that despite the ample motorcycle parking in front of the New Jester’s bar, the crowd was more on on the tame “older” side rather than the “scary biker” side! 🏍️

I grew up not far from that area in the 70s-80s, and had an aunt who lived in a mobile home park not far from that bar near Kearsley Reservoir.

Are those called “manufactured homes” now? Does this mean that Kid Rock is “Straight outta manufactured home” now?

As for our trivia game Thursday, we kind of knew that it wouldn’t be our trivia night when we missed the VERY FIRST QUESTION OF THE GAME! Tsk, tsk…it was just my husband Mike and I battling the questions on this night, so if we had a category that wasn’t strong for either of us, all we could do was make our best guesses and pray to the trivia gods.

What – you don’t pray to trivia gods during trivia games? Fifty percent of the time, it works for us every time!

No prizes for us on this night. Guess the trivia gods were busy helping out other teams on this night?

Here were our abbreviated questions:

Round One

Technology – In June, 2025, what technology company announced that it was retiring the “blue screen of death?” We picked the wrong tech company, yup, we were not off to a great start!

Jingles – What country had a jingle involving avocadoes, first heard in 2015?

Wars – What war began September 1, 1939?

Round Two

Science – Rubbing a balloon over a piece of wool or a head of hair is used to demonstrate what type of electricity?

Logos – What sportswear company has a “swoosh” logo?

Definitions – What word does Merriam-Webster describe as a structure or dewelling on the roof or the top floor of a building? Miss. Had the words “fancy” or “Bob Guccione” been used, we might have gotten this right 👠 💄 🍾 🛏️ 😂

Round Three

Decades – In what decade did women in the U.S. get the right to vote under the Constitution? Yay we made a correct guess here! This was a night to celebrate even the little bitty one point victories!

1990s Music – What band released the 1991 album Nevermind?

Colorful Food – Harvested from the crocus flower, what spice has been used as a pigment in art? I initially came up with the correct guess, but what do you think happened next? Yup, we went with a different one that was wrong! To be fair, our second guess is also used in pigments, but it’s not flower derived. 😔

Halftime – Legislation

In 1996, California became the first U.S. state to ratify legislation allowing the medical use of marijuana. Name four of the next seven states to do the same thing.

We picked two correct states. I heard that one team did really, really well on this category, the rest were like us and 50/50ish.

Halftime scores:

We Were Escorted off the Siren’s Curse at Cedar Point and Ended up Here (us/Pods, 28); Three, 30; Pants/Spacecats/Matty Platters, 33; Rather Be At, 36.

Round Four

Photography – In photography, ISO is a measure of camera sensitivity to what?

American History – At what university did Governor George Wallace make his stand regarding the desegregation of public schools?

Magazines – What notable woman stepped down as editor of Vogue in 2025? Apparently she was not notable enough for the two of us, we had to use our “freebie” here so that we wouldn’t blow six points. Yes, yes…we would regret this decision later, but thankfully, we didn’t blow any questions later in the game for six! Maybe this would be the only prayer that the trivia gods would answer for us?

Round Five

Actresses – What actress played Mary Todd Lincoln in the 2012 film Lincoln? Neither of us saw this so…nope.

Language – What is the name for the gliding  speech sound formed combining two vowels in a single syllable? For the second time this game, we talked ourselves out of our first guess (which would have been correct).

Keeping an eye on his daughter was not part of his skills, apparently! Also, I am kind of trepidatious about him playing Lt. Frank Drebin in the upcoming Naked Gun reboot. I’m a huge Leslie Nielsen fan (not just because we share a birthday, but I loved his droll take on a comedy “straight man,” among other things). I’d hate to see this franchise ruined more than it was by putting Anna Nicole Smith in the third installment! There were only two reasons to put her in that movie 😉

Our “particular set of skills” in trivia games are under thinking, overthinking and talking ourselves out of correct answers!

Moving on? 🤔

Islands – Teneriff is the largest of what set of Spanish islands? Nailbiter here, we had our six point slip and…yes we got it right! But we did almost talk ourselves out of the answer again. Hey every trivia team has to have that “special”  set of skills, doesn’t it?

Round Six

Sports – The Selke Trophy is given annually to forwards demonstrating the most skill in the defensive component of the game? We picked the wrong sport that uses forwards, miss.

Rock Bands – What metal band recorded the song In a Gada Da Vida? I have no idea if I spelled this right…(figure it out)!

Exploration – Lewis and Clark’s expedition was aided by what Shoshone guide?

Scores heading into the final:

Pods, 56; We Were Never Here, 63; Three, 66; Spacecats, 67; Rather Be At, 68; and tied for first were Matty Platters/Pants, 69.

Final Category – Musicians

Bear with me, this one was super wordy and had a lot of unhelpful qualifiers (sorry just had to say that)!

What musician, still touring as of 2025 (narrows that down, doesn’t it???), wrote his first song at age seven (yeah that’s not going to be Mozart, he was younger than that when he wrote his first song, scratch him off our list), served as the lead singer and guitarist for the Bohemian Polka Band, and wrote their first album, And Then I Wrote, in 1962?

If we weren’t fully convinced to cross Mozart off our brainstorming list by now, the words “guitarist.” “polka” and the year “1962” clinched that? Also album? I kid, I kid…we didn’t seriously consider him for this!

We briefly thought about Steve Martin (well, I did, I want him to be the correct answer for lots of trivia questions), but my trusty husband said “No, Heather, he plays the banjo, not the guitar.” Right! 🪕

So I picked a guitarist singer-songwriter guy who as  I just now learned is still touring in 2025 (check), was born in 1945, which could get him him first album in 1962 (check), maybe. But nope, he wasn’t the correct singer/songwriter/guitarist. Seriously, aren’t guitarists kind of a dime a dozen?

I heard that another singer/guitarist/songwriter born four years earlier than the guy I guessed – was also a guess for more than one team. Now that’s a really good guess (far better than mine)!

Nope, he wasn’t right, either.

Game winners – Rather Be At 66, Pants, 69 and We Were Never Here, 126.

You had to go farther back for this one, and We Were Never Here did just that and were the only team to get this right. Go them! I’d much rather have at least one team get a final question right – even if it’s not our team – than none.

We’ve only managed to be the only team in the bar getting a final question right a couple of times at a McShane’s triva game since December, 2024. One of those answers was “Praise You” (Kim knew that one), and the other was Liberace (I knew that one).

We’ve gotten final questions correct on other occasions too, but those were the only ones that I recall where we were the only teams getting the question correct. Was it a blue moon when those things happened? Pardon me while I consult my lunar calendar! 🌙🌛 🌝 ✨

Again, congrats to We Were Never Here for being that awesome team on this night! ☺ 🤜 We are not worthy!

What other teams will be at this Face the Music game at E.G. Nicks in Plymouth 7:30 p.m. Thursday July 31? And what music shirt will you wear (I guess they want us to wear music/concert shirts to this thing)? My choices are Depeche Mode, Jane’s Addiction, NIN or my “”That’s My Jam” tank top. 🤔

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Willie Nelson!

  1. I knew who played Mary Todd Lincoln in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Killer,

I missed seven, which included one of the mystery round states.
