Trivia Recap – Game # 852 – June 8, 2025 – Sporcle Events – YpsiAlehouse – Ypsilanti, MI

Scroll down to the end for the answers…

I had three things I wanted to accomplish in the recent venue tournament game at the YpsiAlehouse, none of which involved us doing anything remotely awesome in the game – you know – like winning?

Pfft (blows raspberry), that stuff is for total amateurs! We “tried” and failed to play an entire venue tournament game earlier in the week, but DTE had other plans (curse whatever squirrel or rabbit it was chewing on a wire or whatever else caused the “equipment problem”).

Seriously – All I wanted in this game was to use up our prize money that we won in January (done), see a different team win the game than the “usual” team that won a majority of the games all season (also done, congrats to 24-Hour Brunch for doing just that) and three? Not be completely (insert off-color word of choice, preferably an action word beginning with “f” and ending in “ed”) by the mystery rounds.

My standards are low – if we get 50 percent or more of the mystery round questions correct, that’s…”good enough!” If we get 100 percent of a round correct? Yay! Overall, we didn’t do too badly on the mystery rounds!

What a pleasant surprise to get all eight points on a mystery round about Tony Award winning musicals! We expected to have a difficult mystery round about LGBTQ authors since it’s Pride Month (there was a LGBTQ final in game two, however). You’ll have to read on to see what that was!

No prizes for us this time, which is good! It takes us months to use those up, apparently! 😂

Here were our questions:

Game One

Round One

1 Science Names – Ursus maritimus is the scientific name for what large Arctic mammal?

2 Brands – What beverage brand, known for the slogan “Made from the best stuff on Earth,” merged with Dr. Pepper in 2008 and now operates under the Keurig Dr. Pepper umbrella?

3 Sitcoms – What UPN sitcom that debuted in 1996 stars R&B singer Brandy as a high school student navigating life with her upper-middle class family? Yay for Mike remembering this answer…

4 Oceans – The Milwaukee Deep is the deepest point in the Atlantic Ocean and lies within what oceanic trench that is named after a nearby U.S. territory? It would have been helpful here to be able to name more than one famous oceanic trench, fail for 6.

Mystery Round 1

Each of the following clues combines and scrambles the names of two three-named celebrities who share one name in common. Identify that common name, which is missing from the clue.

M1 Leigh Hewitt Love Jason

M2 Frye Unit Soleil Zappa

M3 Makepeace Bryan Jennings Thackeray

M4 Frederico Gabriel Lorca Marquez

Missed #3 and #4.

Round Two

5 World Leaders – After Joseph Stalin, who held the longest tenure as leader of the Soviet Union, serving from 1964-1982? Facebook host clue, thanks to host from Farmington Brewing Robyn for posting this so we could see it! We take all lifelines we can get for trivia these days!

6 Dual Threats – Name the actress and singer from the following clip. Since I can’t do audio clues, I’ll just say it’s the same actress who played Maddy in the 2010 Coen Brothers take of True Grit. Which is one of the CB movies that I loved (I am 50/50 on their movies, I either hate them or really love them).

She also recently became engaged to a Bills player. Bummer that I knew these two things about her, but had no f—ing idea that she was also a singer (we incorrectly guessed Selena Gomez, who is also an actress/singer)! I didn’t hear this actress sing at all in either movie that I’ve seen her in!

Sorry I don’t know what song they played by her in this game.

7 Franchises – What Mattel media franchise centers on a hero who defends Castle Greyskull from Skeletor on the fantasy planet of Eternia?

8 Actresses – Taxi Driver and Freaky Friday were early acting credits of what award-winning actress?

NERD POINT: Name either movie that earned this actress an Oscar for best actress.

Of couse we knew this one for one stinking point and one bonus point rather than six, which we blew on the trenches question! Oh the trials and tribulations of trivia, right?

Mystery Round 3

From the following list of seven musicals, choose the four that won a Tony Award for Best Musical in the 2010s.

An American in Paris, The Book of Mormon, Catch Me If You Can, Dear Evan Hansen, Fun Home, Kinky Boots, Newsies.

Wow, managed to pick all four correct answers here! Sweet! I’ll take whatever good luck thrown our way in a trivia game!

We were in fifth tied with Only Fans with 41 points going into the final, behind Where Are My Sisters, 44; No Talent Ass Clowns, 48, 24 Hour Brunch, 49 and Defending Champs, 51.

Since we were near the bottom of the barrel we wagered zero on the category of Stanley Cup. We knew that even if we got it, the teams ahead of us would likely get it too, which would do nothing to put us in the prize zone. And with nothing else on the line for us in this game? 🤷‍♀️ Why not?

Final Question – Stanley Cup

Name one of the two NHL teams tied for the most Stanley Cup championships among franchises not part of the “Original Six” teams – a group that includes the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Bruins, Red Wings, Blackhawks and Rangers.

Seriously, even an armchair hockey person who can name maybe five professional hockey players tops (including that Canadian guy worshiped as a God in Canada) such as myself knows which teams are the “Original Six!” This question basically just told the teams which teams NOT to put down as their answers here. I’m not being critical, but for a deciding game such as this? Make teams work a bit harder maybe?

I’ll shut up now! As I said, we had no horse in this race anyway… Yes, we knew this. No, I’m not saying whether the guy with the great hair I mentioned earlier was on one of these teams or not (you’ll have to scroll down for the answers).

Game Two

Round Three

9 Blockbusters – What 1975 blockbuster directed by Steven Spielberg primarily takes place on fictional Amity Island?

10 Grammar – In grammar, what part of speech do words like “above” and “from”: belong to, as they typically show relationships in time, space, or direction?

11 Bones – What is the more common name for the patella, a rounded triangular bone found in legs?

12 Mountains – What mountain range forms a natural border between France and Spain, with the microstate Andorra sandwiched in between? Yay Brad! Helpful that the correct answer has to do with a certain animal breed that he’s particularly fond of!

Mystery Round 3 – Visual

Missed #3.

Round Four

13 – Sports – In 2011, New Zealand hosted and won the men’s World Cup in which sport?

14 Mythology – In Green mythology, the Labyrinth that housed the Minotaur was located on what large Mediterranean island?

NERD POINT – What Athenian hero was known for slaying the Minotaur?

Usually it’s my nerdy husband who is all over these kinds of questions, but this one was all me (something I read in high school). Speaking of childhood knowledge…

15 Short Stories – In Rudyard Kipling’s short story of the same name, what kind of animal is Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, who defends a family from cobras? Did anyone else get to watch this on projectors in school classrooms? Is this the most Gen X thing you’ve read today? No? OK…when this happened in school, I’d be so excited about it that I’d call a friend on a rotary dial phone to talk about it! Or ride over to their house on a bike while not wearing a helmet to talk about how awesome it was!

16 Art – What American artist, known for capturing urban solitude, painted Nighthawks, now housed at the Art Institute of Chicago? We came close to remembering this person’s name, but…nope.

Mystery Round 4

Lady Gaga Lyrics

Name each Lady Gaga song by a notable lyric:

M1 “I want your ugly, I want your disease.”

M2 “I wanna hold ’em, like they do in Texas, please.”

M3 “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen.”

M4 “But baby, I just need one good one to stay.”

Not the best round for the players we had playing on this night, but…I tried? Based on the two LG songs I was able to name outright, I deduced two correct ones, and that fourth one? It’s a song I hear where I work all the time, I just didn’t know the title. Had someone else mentioned the right answer for #1 I would have said “Yeah, that’s it!” Ya know how sometimes your brain just sometimes needs a little “push” during trivia games? Like that! Four points still better than…zero!

We were in fourth going into the final with 48, tied with No Talen Ass Clowns; Sisters were in third with 54, 24 Hour Brunch and Defending Champs were tied for first with 55.

Final Category – TV Series

What groundbreaking Showtime series, which aired from 2004=2009, is set in West Hollywood and features television’s first ensemble cast of lesbian and bisexual characters?

We put in what we “thought” was a very good guess, for a similarly themed series that had a similar run length, but earlier. Nope…

Defending Champs won the tiebreaker for first against 24 Hour Brunch, No Talent Ass Clowns finished third (I’m only listing registered league teams at this point), only fans had 57 and we had 33. I think every team but us got this one correct! Never even heard of this series.

Cumulative winners were 24 Brunch, 134; No Talent Ass Clowns, 126; Only Fans, 113; Defending Champs, 107; Pod Squad (us), 74.

Our next trivia outing will be McShane’s Pub for a My Trivia Live game.
