So far we haven’t gotten off to a great start in this new My Trivia Live season! We’re giving the “old college try” to playing at least once here every week for a few weeks to see how we do – and see how all of our personal lives shake out. It’s been difficult since the plague to go all-in on trivia commitments!
Should we BE committed? Yes, for multiple reasons!
It was nearly as competitive for seating as it was for trivia prizes! When we first arrived, our only option was a seat with backless barstools by the front window. While I was picking up our game sheets, my trivia partner Mike found us an empty booth!
We failed again to win any prizes, but we did get the final question correct – and actually felt confident enough to wager some points! It wasn’t enough to put us in the prize zone. π’
This was the first MTL final question we’d gotten correct since February 25. But…to be fair, some MTL questions are so difficult that NO teams get them correct! I’m not making this up! Sure, we miss some just because we’re not smart enough to know the answers of course!
Speaking of not knowing answers! My total bad for not listening to my husband’s suggestion for a flower known as the national flower of Nepal and the state blossom for a couple of U.S. states. We also didn’t know that the New York Yankees recently introduced a new type of bat whose name sounds like a sex toy for people who are extremely…ambitious.
We were also one off in a Bill of Rights question, and clearly we need to learn more about rivers in Africa that aren’t called “Nile” or “Congo!” Though we did manage to name the fourth longest river in Africa as our guess.
We finished with 61 league points, no prizes.
Here were our abbreviated questions:
Round One
Production – Which U.S. state produces the most maple syrup in the United States?
Around the House – What household appliance has the same name as the metal from which it was originally made? Mike came up with the answer here, this appliance is not one that I use…ever!
Science! – On which side of the Periodic Table would you find the Noble Gases? The ones you have to address by their royal titles lest they get offended…
Round Two
Constitution – What amendment protects against unreasonable searches and seizures? We picked one right next to the correct one in the list, miss. Do we need to retake high school civics? π
Singers – What singer known for the megahit “Superstition” in the 1970s released a new song in 2024 called “How can we fix our nation’s broken heart?” That is a very good question in that song title!
Animated TV – What animated TV show debuted on Fox in 2011 and features the Belcher family? Is it bad that I knew the answer because of a crossover episode involving this series – and “Archer?” Hey, any knowledge lifelines in trivia games are legit!

Round Three
Baseball – Featuring a thicker barrel closer to the hitter’s hands, what kind of bat made its debut in the 2025 season for the New York Yankees? Neither of us players in the game follow baseball – or baseball news, apparently! Miss.
Mythology – Persephone ate the seed of what fruit which prevented her from being able to leave the Underworld? What? Is this how “superfoods” work? π€
Movie Quotes – Robert Duvall said “I love the smell of (blank) in the morning” in what 1979 film?
Halftime – Space
Name four of the five countries that have soft landed unmanned probles, rovers or landers on the moon.
Got all of these – and I suspect a lot of other teams did, too. Which means…lots of ties at the half!
Halftime scores ranged from 30 to 37, we had 35 points. A few teams had perfect scores in the first half. Curse us for not knowing the Bill of Rights and baseball bats whose names sound like sex toys for ambitious ladies and gents well enough! Seriously – do I just have a filthy mind?
Round Four
1990s Movies – Woody Harrelson and Randy Quaid portrayed bowlers in what 1996 film?
American History – Who was the only man to serve as a general for both sides in the American Revolutionary War? It took us way too long to think of the right guy. In America: The Motion Picture on Netflix he is portrayed as a werewolf! Learning history is SO important!
Flowers – I was right to be worried about this category – plants questions usually kill us…What is the national flower of Nepal and also the state flower of Washington and West Virginia? Miss for 4. Ouch! Let us walk barefoot through a patch of poison ivy as punishment for this! By “us” I really mean me, because Mike had the right guess and I talked him out of it (bad wife)! I honestly didn’t think Nepal had that temperate of a climate, I was thinking more of Mount Everest’s summit which doesn’t have a temperate climate at all – but is five miles higher up (facepalm). This question really hurt us…
My moment for redemption is nigh!
Round Five
Crime – What man who took out Paul Castellano, the head of the Gambino family was arrested in 1990 and later convicted? For the first time in the game, we were the first team to hand in our slips for this question. It’s demoralizing to see people rushing up their slips for questions that you end up struggling with, isn’t it? Thankfully we got it right (I remember this being big news at the time, a real life Goodfellas story). Though Goodfellas was based on a real life story too!
At this point in the game, we had yet to use our freebie “Answer of the Day” that MTL lets teams use once per game to get out of answering questions you don’t know for full points. Do we use it on “Congress” – or “Rivers?” Both of which could fuck us. And had we not had the freebie answer option, both questions WOULD have fucked us!
Congress – In 1968, who would become the first black woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress? Yup, we used our freebie here, I remembered the name Jeannette Rankin, but I knew it wasn’t her.
Rivers – Owens Falls spans what river in Uganda? This question is really, really abbreviated…miss for 2.
Round SIx –
Oscars – In 1948, who was the only actor wo win an Oscar for a Shakespearean role, doing so for Hamlet? I was torn between two guys who were active at the time and played similar types of roles, but since this was not going to be our game anyway…we picked the guy who was married to Liz Taylor more than once and not the right guy who won a Golden Raspberry Award for playing Neil Diamond’s dad in The Jazz Singer.
Maybe if our trivia host was one who played musical clues for questions, I would have gotten a clue if she played “Coming to America!” She played that song during a game very recently! π

In the News – With its governor Phil Murphy in what state did drone sightings spark conspiracy theories in 2024? Nice save from Mike here, thank the gods he remembered this (smooch)!
Presidents – Who served as president between Bill Clinton and Barack Obama?
We were next to the bottom in terms of scores with 61 – all but one of the nine teams playing were ahead of us. You just don’t know how a MTL game will roll at the end – just last week, the highest score was 59 points!
Ypsi Starlings were on top of the roost with 70 points, 2 was right behind them with 69 (totes jealous of that score π because we are so, so mature).
Final – To measure purchasing power between countries, for decades, The Economist used what branded food item that made its debut in the 1960s?
Took us a while, and we discussed several options. Then Mike suggested an answer that sounded too correct to not write down. He wagered all but a few points and we crossed our fingers…
Yes we got it (soft yay), no prizes. Better luck next game? Starlings took the top prize, 2 took second, and Spacecats took third.
We’ll be back at it here sometime next week. No music trivia at Corner next week, they are only doing that every other week. In our recent music trivia game, I was the hero for knowing the birth name of the Sex Pistols’ lead singer! We were “supposed” to put his stage name, but I made sure we got credit for our answer! Fun times, I’m really enjoying music trivia much more than music bingo, and I hope it survives!
As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, John Gotti!
