I’m not normally much of a sobber when I watch movies and TV. But I do have my breaking points!
Black Mirror on Netflix did a whammy on me with season 7 episode 5’s “Eulogy” episode.
If I had a therapist, he or she would look at me from the underside of his or her glasses and say to me: “How does that make you feel?” I was gripped throughout the whole episode, but only the final scene unleashed my waterworks.

Throughout the entire episode, a very emotionally broken Paul Giamatti (Phil) is being guided by an AI attempting to help him recover memories of a girl he loved in the early 90s named Carol. Her daughter wants to set up a memorial for her mama, and she enlists the help of a tech device called Eulogy to do this. So the AI asks him to go through his old photos.
Problem was, Phil had destroyed all of his old photos with her images in them (by cutting out or blacking out her face).
Maybe the song “Pictures of You” by the Cure would have been a good song to use in this episode if Netflix had the rights to it!
His AI guide allows him to walk into old snapshots as he attempts to remember Carol.
They dated for three years, both of them had one night stands they could not get past. Carol’s one-night stand in London results in her becoming pregnant with her daughter Kelly.
Ultimately, he is able to remember Carol’s smiling face when he hears a composition that Carol had recorded while playing her cello. Hearing the song makes him remember… everything – down to her outfit (red and white baseball three quarter sleeve T and denim shorts – and her face smiling at him while she played.
I just blurted out loud – “So that’s what made him remember.” And I just… cried. Not for long, mind you, but wow…if anything can tap into my emotions, music can!
