What’s This? A New Hire at Work Who’s Actually A Delight to Work With?

As a person who’s been working in Retailville for longer than I care to admit, I’ve worked with and trained countless newbies. It’s sad to say that when I’m fortunate enough to  meet a good one, it’s the exception – not the rule.

A recent new hire has been a complete gem! No attitude, he works hard, wants to learn about the job and wants to be trained. He actually THANKED me today for my help! I don’t remember the last time any new hire was so courteous to me. I told myself I wasn’t going to cry πŸ˜‚

It’s been hit or miss for sure. Mostly miss. A recent new hire refused to help me clean up a mess unless I said “pretty please.” I didn’t ask him to do it himself – or order him to do it – so that was completely uncalled for. I refused to work with him after that. Thankfully a new GM cut his hours down to almost nothing and bam he was gone. He never did any work anyway. The new GM actually sent his ass home more than once when she caught him screwing around and not working. The previous GM overlooked things and didn’t listen to complaints.

Another recent newbie was confrontational with anyone attempting to train him. Especially me. I even complained to HR after he decided that it was OK to shout at me (nothing ever came of it despite having a sit down with me, him and HR…such a waste of my fucking time). Later, he quit and came back, then quit again. He tried coming back a second time on the condition that me and another person on my team were fired. Needless to say, his request was not granted.

About 10 years ago, a new hire gave off so much attitude to me that immediately after work I stopped at a bar for a drink! He didn’t last more than a week. Good thing, because that could have been very problematic for my health (mental and physical)!

I’m not incapable of looking in a mirror. I know I’m not the easiest person to work with.

I never expect anyone to do anything at work that I’m not willing to do myself.  I have little patience for people who don’t listen, give off attitude and don’t want to learn. And no whining! There’s a reason it’s called “work” and not sitting on your ass and bingeing TV!

I hope this new guy sticks around for a while!
