First Quarter 2025 Trivial Pursuits Overview – ‘Pods

Wow, has three months gone by already? My how time flies!

Our trivial pursuits in the first quarter of 2025 haven’t been without a little bit of drama! We started the year by having two different teams at McShane’s Pub in Ypsilanti, MI (which offers My Trivia Live games) accuse us of cheating after we were the only team getting a ’90s music final question correct.

Needless to say, we were quite pissed off about this. No, we didn’t cheat, and no, we weren’t disqualified. But I did put an event in my phone calendar that said “end of McShane’s ban” around the end of January! I thought that letting things cool off a bit might be a good idea.

We made our return to McShane’s in mid February. This was mainly because my birthday fell on a Tuesday this year, and I was DETERMINED to go out for trivia on my birthday – for the first time since 2020, after two unsuccessful attempts in 2023 and 2024. How DARE they have a Super Bowl on my birthday (which caused bars to call off trivia)! πŸ˜‚ 🏈

My first choice for my birthday game was a MTL spot in Northville, but weather alerts made me switch to a spot closer to home. So McShane’s then? It was fun, I gave out birthday cookies to a couple of players on a different team, and Kim gave me a bottle of paczki flavored vodka!

While we were on our temporary self imposed “exile” from McShane’s, we thought we’d give the very competitive Corner Brewery (which offers Sporcle Events games) a go. We had a new player helping us, and also an occasional “loaner” from the former league team Ennui, in addition to the four players I have in my own ranks. You do need a bigger team to be able to “really” compete at this bar, famous for its “megateams.” Who is it that I know who coined this term? πŸ€” Could this person also be someone I saw win first place here by himself many moons ago? Uh… The best I ever did here solo was second place/$10 maybe about 10 years ago. We had some successes in our brief run at Corner, but on February 19th – at a game that technically didn’t happen – things kind of…fell apart.

So what do I mean about the game technically “not happening?” By that, I mean it’s not in the Sporcle records. Ooh, a mystery! πŸ‘» It’s simply…not there. think that the host lost the scores, but I don’t know that for sure.

Read about the game that didn’t happen here:

Ever see one of your trivia teammates have what appears to be a panic attack right in front of your face? Yeah, that happened. I’m not revealing names, and I’m not saying any more about this. But I decided to temporarily stop trying to play any more games at Corner until further notice.

We returned to McShane’s in earnest in late February, and we have had some decent success with winning prize money and having at least four players coming out for some of the games. One of my “semi regular ” players adores the mac ‘n cheese!

We plan to finish out the MTL season at McShane’s this week, and we will have played 10 out of the 20 weeks. We plan to play a “wild card” spot next week for the MTL bye week. It will probably be a Sporcle Events spot.

We do plan to return to McShane’s for the new season, but I can’t say right now whether we’ll “go for broke” (as in play for tournament qualifying purposes) or not. I can’t predict my work schedule more than a couple of weeks out, and as I learned last year…life happens, and sometimes, like what happened about a year ago…life just stops πŸ˜”

Que sera, sera!
