Don’t you just LOVE it when you put down an answer to a question that was the wrong answer in a game a few weeks ago but it’s the right answer the next time you put it down as an answer?
Sure, getting the final question answer would have been nice, too, but…you can’t have everything! I guess some of the times you put down “Gloria Vanderbilt” as a trivia question answer about contemporary women fashion designers you might be right!
Now to check if she’s still alive (click click click) – nope, she died in 2019 at age 95. Nice long life, considering the first photo that came up in my search about her shows her with one of those long cigarettes with a fancy rich person’s cigarette holder like FDR used to use:

It was almost like a “date night” on a recent trivia outing for us at McShane’s Pub in Ypsilanti, MI with just myself and my husband doing battle on some strange, strange questions and sitting in a cozy booth with nice padded seats. Thankfully he knew a few of the strange, strange answers we needed! I still don’t know how he knew that one answer, that when written out – looks more like a city name in Poland – than the name for an alignment of planets!
Next week, we’ll be taking a hiatus from McShane’s, and checking out a Sporcle Events trivia night nearby. It’s all part of my ADD-driven trivia plan where I try not to play at a place so many consecutive times that I get bored with it! We’re not giving up on trivia nights at McShane’s (though I think that SOME of the players might not mind if we did wink 😉 😊). About that…
Here’s my special shout out to to a one-person team getting the final question correct and finishing in third! You bested us in this trivia battle, we’ll try to beat ya next time!
We finished with 55 points and were in second place going into the final, no prizes.
Here were our abbreviated questions:
Round One
Animated Characters – What color is Patrick Star, Sponge Bob’s friend?
Same Name – What blood-sucking arachnid shares its name with a light beating sound made by a clock?
Geography – Monte Carlo is an administrative area in what city-state in the French Riviera?
Got all of these.
Round Two
Pen Names – Theodore Geisel wrote children’s books under what pen name?
Animals – All species of lemurs are native to what island nation? We got this, but went into kind of a rabbit-holey conversation about a relative of the lemur called the “slow loris.” Why did they call it “slow,” because of its movement speed, or its intelligence? Then we tried doing our best imitation of lorises with the latter description and it just kind of got silly – “I’m a loris – I like hanging out in trees and stuff.”
Art – What armless statue has been displayed in the Louvre since 1821?
Got all of these.
Round Three
Page to Screen – Crusoe, a 2008 NBC series, is loosely based on the works of what writer? You know it’s going to be bad when you ask the host to spell a name (I thought it sounded like “Caruso” in the way the host said it, so I was just thinking about actor David Caruso for a second there)! But then I got my head on straight and thought of another author from (about) that same time who wrote adventurey stuff about a man who would later inspire the name of a fast food chain. Miss…
Stock Symbols – What company trades on the NYSE under the ticker symbol ZZ? We put in our guess, then I thought “Maybe it has something to do with sleep?” Yup…it did (oh well). Miss. Will we get any correct this round?
Monarchs – What monarch reigned for a majority of William Shakespeare’s life? Yay we got this!
Halftime – Stuff about Swans
Answer the following questions about swans:
H1 Name for a young swan
H2 Composer of Swan Lake
H3 Fashion designer who used a swan in logos in the 1970s and 1980s
M4 Author of The Trumpet of the Swan
Missed the fourth one.
Round Four
Consultants – What is the trademarked name for decluttering method touted by organization expert Marie Condo?
Sports – Which two teams played in the first Super Bowl? We knew one for sure and put our best guess in for the other team (fail).
Whistleblowers – What activist and whistleblower was court martialed in 2014 for leaking classified information to Wiki Leaks? We used our “word of the day” to avoid having to answer this.
Round Five
Fun With Words – What stellar Scrabble word has only “sometimes vowels” as vowels and describes a straight line configuration of three or more celestial bodies? Yay Mike!
Poets – What American poet wrote about “ships passing in the night” among other things I didn’t write down in its entirety? Miss.
Supreme Court – What future Supreme Court justice argued in the case of Brown v. Board of Education?
Round Six
Laws – What is the only state in the U.S. prohibiting discrimination based on body size? Miss.
TV Catchphrases – On what TV series airing from 1978-1986 did a character typically say “Whatcha Talkin’ Bout?”
Capitals -The capital city of Ohio shares its name with what explorer?
Scores heading into final – ten teams, scores ranging from 29 to 62 with the Ypsilanti Starlings in first. We were in second with 55, Pursuit of O Snappyness was in third with 53, Spacecats had 52, Nope had 51 and Dead Guys had 46 (didn’t write down the other team names).
Final Category: Hip-Hop
Described by critics as a “poignant and powerful portrait of our country,” which hip-hop song was the first hip-hop song to win both record of the year and song of the year, doing so in the 2010s?
Betting zero would not have helped us here…at least three teams got this and they weren’t us! We went with a hip-hop song released earlier, that was only Grammy nominated (not a winner). It was still a fun night out, congratulations to teams Nope, O Snappyness and the Starlings for taking the prizes.
