It’s rare these days when we play more than one trivia game in a week, yet there we were at McShane’s Pub in Ypsilanti, for the second time in one week…
Back in the long, long ago, multiple trivia games in a week weren’t THAT unusual for us. We are kind of “semi retired” now, and not as competitive and committed as we used to be.
Should we BE committed for wagering it all in a final question (nearly) every team in our bar missed? Maybe!
Still, it was a fun “double trivia date” with Kim and Brent joining Mike and I on a blustery cold evening. Even if we didn’t win any prizes, and got a bit roughed up by some of the questions.
That Hepburn question though (well played, whomever wrote this one)! You got us good 👍
Here were our very very abbreviated questions:
Round 1
Studies – What fruit doesn’t actually keep the doctor away according to a 2015 study?
Idioms – What’s good for the goose is good for the what?
Animals – What type of animal is an equine?
Round 3
Scientists – What scientist wrote On the Origin of Species?
Food – What type of hard shelled black bean shares it’s name with a reptile?
Measurements – What distance race can be measured by 12 and a half laps of a traditional track?
Round 3
Presidents – Who was the first non incumbent vice president to be inaugurated as president? Miss.
Awards – In 2025 what actor was nominated for a Golden Raspberry award after playing the same character in a film for which he won an Oscar for a 2019 film? Miss.
Insects – What type of fly native to Africa causes sleeping sickness?
Halftime – Geography
Name four U.S. states in which you’d find the Ozarks.
Got two correct.
Round 4
Actresses – What familial relationship were Audrey and Katharine Hepburn?
Online Terms – What term used in math can also describe a social media post with .ire negative than positive replies? We used the “word of the day” to avoid answering this.
Quotes – What actor and one time president had an autobiography called I Ain’t Got No Time to Bleed, which is also a quite from the film Predator, in which they appeared? Miss.
Round 5
Science – What subatomic particle is made of three quarks? This question reverse engineered from the answer, full disclosure…miss. And damn we just watched a Star Trek – The Next Generation episode where they did a sweep of the ship for these!
Sports – Name one of the two colleges that have graduated three Super Bowl winning starting quarterbacks. Miss
Medical Terms – What ancient medical practice involved drilling holes in the head to attempt to cure a variety of ailments? By this point we were willing to try anything to improve our game! 😜
Round 6
Processes – What is made in the process of saponification? Miss.
First Ladies – What First Lady is remembered for saving a George Washington portrait from a fire in 1814?
TV Guys – In whose TV neighborhood would you find King Friday, Daniel Tiger and Mr. McFeeley? And right then we were so punch drunk – and maybe a bit into our drinks – and it occurred to us that “McFeeley” sounded like a proper name for a pervert. So at least a couple of us did our best (or worst) imitations of a pervy Mr. McFeeley, who delivered bad touches – instead of just mail and packages! Ha I said “packages!” 😂 🍆 OK I’ll shut up now!🤔
We somehow managed to wind up in third with 47 points going into the final, tied with Spacecats, using an overly long hashtag name that was very derisive to the Dead Guys team for some reason (honestly we don’t play here enough to “get” the whole dynamic with the overly long hashtagged names, must be some inside joke we’re not getting), and pursuit of O Snappiness and Starlings were ahead of us with 56 and 58 points respectively.
In keeping with our streak of being super talented at picking X wrong answer instead of right answers for a few questions, we decided to be really dumb and wager it all in the final question for which we didn’t know the answer. Can’t change horses midstream? What was that dumb Dubya quote (oh to have his adorable dumbness now instead of all of the daily abject terror…)

Business Blunders
What company founded by Jonathan Abrams turned down a buyout bid from Google in 2003, with the company dissolving in 2015?
Zero wagers were the smart move on this one. But clearly this wasn’t a game where we cared about making smart decisions! What – are we one of “those” trivia teams now (blows raspberry).
So the teams who like us, were completely deranged enough to bet it all, were in a tie for third with zero points. I had Brent go up to answer since it was the category of quarterbacks and he was more sporty than me, and actually knew who the guy was that they asked about…
“In what year was Bart Starr born?”
We didn’t win the tiebreaker but it was fun trying! I think Dead Guys won the tiebreaker.
We’ll be back for a “team” game at Corner Brewery next week. Unsure when we’ll be back at McShanes, but we’ll be back sometime!
As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Joaquin Phoenix! An award is an award!
