There are some final questions in trivia that really just come down to guesses – ideally, somewhat educated guesses – and well, sometimes those guesses are correct – and sometimes those guesses are wrong!
We did remember one of our trivia mantras when answering the final question in game two – which is : “Everything is bigger in Texas.” Sadly, there are lots of things in Texas that are bigger than other things in Texas and outside of Texas, and we just happened to pick the wrong bigger thing in Texas!
We’ve had a decent run in our trivia games lately, having won prizes of some sort every time we’ve gone out since December 26. We kind of knew deep down that this alone was a sign that the trivia universe was probably out of whack!
We won a second place prize in game one, but blew it in game two on a question about everyone’s favorite trivia topic (groan) populations of cities!
Show of hands – is this REALLY any team’s favorite trivia topic?
Yeah, yeah…we know that not ALL final questions can be about hit songs from the 1980s, sci-fi TV series or best picture winning movies!
We finished in eighth overall for the night with 97 points, we remain in a tie for third in the overall standings with nine “globe points.” Teams who finish first for the night overall get 10 of these, second place teams get eight, third place teams get six, fourth place teams get four and and fifth place teams get 2. The rest get one each.
Here were our questions:
Game One/Round One
1 Restaurants – Munch’s Make Believe Band, featuring Jasper T. Jowls on the bass guitar and Bella Bunny on the tambourine among other characters, has been a staple at what entertainment restaurant chain?
2 Science – What is the term for a congenital lack of melanin in an animal or plant, resulting in white hair, skin, scales or feathers and pink or blue eyes?
Example of a creature with this condition is shown above, he or she was nicknamed “Whitey” and lived near my brother’s home in Houghton, MI. I lucked out getting this shot in thr trees, had it been on the snowy ground it would have been more tricky to get a good shot!
3 2024 Films – What 2024 film is the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide, and one of two to have grossed at least 1 billion, alongside Joker?
4 Magazines – In 2020, Harry Styles became the first man to appear solo on the cover of what magazine, which was founded in 1892? Good guess. Where was our good guess luck on that g2 final? š¤ š
Mystery Round One
Spanish – Give the three-letter word in Spanish for the English word in each clue.
M1 River
M2 Eye
M3 Today
M4 Daylight
Got all of these.
Round Two
5 Landmarks – What country is home to more than a dozen UNESCO World Heritage sites, including archaeological sites at Delphi and Mystras?
6 2002 TV – What TV series that oriignally aired from 2004-2010 has a spin-off series of “mobisodes” subtitled Missing Pieces, consisting of short video clips made to be viewed on a mobile device? Totally “lost” here…miss.
7 Grammys – What artist was nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year four times from 2010-2023, but failed to win each time, set4ting a record for most nominations without a win in that category? Nice work Andrew! š
8 Olympics – Within four, in what year did South Africa return to the Olympic Games, having originally been barred in 1962 due to its policy of Apartheid?
NERD POINT: Get the year exact.
Yay got this for the points and nerd point.
Mystery Round Two – This Day in History
Answer the questions about events that took on January 15 throughout history:
M1 in 1972, what song that is more than eight minutes long reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 ?
M2 In 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 safely ditched on what body of water?
M3 In 1967, the first Super Bowl took place with the Kansas City Chiefs losing to what team?
M4 In 1559, who was crowned queen of England and Ireland, although her reign actually began several months earlier?
Missed #4.
We were in second with 51 points behind Your Resume Sucks by just one point, they were in first with 51. Dangerous Nights was in third with 49. There were 16 teams packed into the “lounge” area of the brewery on this evening, with two smaller teams occupying a table next to us. Teams arriving an hour – or more – before game time on trivia nights here isn’t that unusual! Even the two main parking lots can fill up, meaning people arriving later may have to use street parking.
We bet it all on the category of Movie Titles.
Final Question Game One:
Among the last 10 winners of the Academy Award for Best Picture, four have titles that do not contain the letter A. Name two of those four films.
Got this, so did the one team ahead of us, so we finished second with $10. Didn’t get the standings down, so don’t know who finished third.
Game Two/Round Three
9 Kids’ Books – In the Winnie-The-Pooh series by A.A. Milne, which of Pooh’s seven animal friends has a name that comes first alphabetically? I remembered the theme song which lists all of the animals…and sang it to be sure here! Who says songs can’t help you remember trivia answers? We did almost overthink a bit here and wonder whether Christopher Robin was considered an “animal.” Yes he is technically an animal, but he was not considered that for the purposes of this question!
10 Backing Vocals – The I-Threes, consisting of Judy Mowatt, Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths provided backing vocals for what band beginning in 1974? Facebook clue.
11 TV Themes – Audio clue of an opening theme from a TV series airing from 2002-2009. Miss. Hint: Tony Shalhoub with OCD.
12 Human Body – Name one of the two most abundant elements in the human body after oxygen and carbon. We failed to think enough about elements at the molecular level. High school science fail! Maybe we needed our “scientist” Dave for this one!
Mystery Round Three – Visual
Got all of these, nice teamwork.
Round Four
13 Same Name – What is the only team named shared by both an NHL franchise and a MLB franchise?
14 1980s Movies – What 1988 film stars Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe as FBI agents investigating the disappearance of three civil rights workers? My high school history teacher Mrs. Sheridan showed this in class and students had to get permission slips from parents beforehand to OK it because of the graphic violence.
Or was this my friend’s history teacher Mrs. Chapel? Meh…
15 Islands – The Canary Islands belong to Spain but are closest geographically to what country?
16 Board Games – A bobble head, candy dish, cup and a phone are among the tokens in what edition of Monopoly? Miss.
Mystery Round Four – Odd One Out
Choose the thing among the following lists of things that don’t belong.
M1 Nobel Prize categories – Mathematics, Economics, Literature, Physics
M2 Heads of government at the Yalta Conference during World War 2 – Charles DeGaulle, Franklin Roosevelt, Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill
M3 Resources in the base version of the game Catan – Grain, Water, Brick and Ore
M4 Reality shows whose standard US versions currently have $1 million grand prizes – Survivor, The Amazing Race, Big Brother and America’s Got Talent
Got all of these.
We were in fifth going into the final with 47 points, behind One is the Loneliest Number and 24-Hour Brunch, who both had 48 points, Smells Like Poutine Spirit and YRS, who both had 52 and Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender, who were in first with 53 points.
We stupidly bet it all on the category of:
US Cities
I didn’t get this question down, but it involved naming one of three U.S. cities that were ranked #9, #10 and #11 in population of US cities in 1990 and has increased in population since then – or something like that.
We got the right state, wrong city.
Didn’t get final standings because I was a little too late getting a screen grab of them before they went…poof! But there was a tiebreaker for second.
We’ll be back at it again next week same time, same place, different players. Don’t know our trivia plan after that (all depends on my work schedule).
As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Michael Scott! Though your show didn’t get laughs from you being classy, did it?
