Trivia Recap- Game # 836 – November 20, 2024 – Corner Brewery- Ypsilanti, MI

Oh the irony – we decided to use a Star Wars inspired team name in a recent trivia game, and failed to get a question about a female soccer player whom is probably related to Han Solo (not really)! But wouldn’t that be a cool thing to tell your friends? “Yeah…Han Solo is my uncle!”

We paid a visit to Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti, MI on a recent chilly Wednesday evening. A newer host on the block named Seth was on the mic, serving up a decidedly different “style” of hosting than served up by past hosts. We’ve seen a few different hosts at the helm here since trivia began here in 2012. Seth does something different than any other host I’ve seen. If you put in an incorrect answer, chances are Seth will let EVERYONE know about that wrong answer! No he won’t say which team put in “X” wrong answer!

After each question, expect to hear a detailed list of what seems to be EVERY incorrect answer submitted – before being able to hear the actual correct answer!

Want to read every single wrong answer we submitted during the game? Let’s see – locusts, Ninja Warrior, Facebook, Magic, Mia Hamm, Americium, gold, idiom, The Office, no idea (times four), Gerald Ford, no idea, Ice Cube, Mark Wahlberg and Mickey Rourke.

So yes, we got to hear Seth read all of these wrong answers on the mic, in addition to wrong answers submitted by other teams! It took a minute, since there were 20 teams signed up to play!

He announced on the mic that he will only be hosting locally for a couple of more weeks, since he’s moving to Grand Rapids. He said a host named Leif (pronounced like the word “life,” not like the “leaf” pronunciation for the name of 1970s heartthrob slash singer Leif Garrett, or Nordic explorer Leif Ericsson). I remember an older neighbor girl having a Leif Garrett poster on her wall!

As you might have guessed by now, we… didn’t do so hot in this game! A couple of bright points – acing a “current events” mystery round (that is usually not a great category for us), and getting the game two final question about world capitals in the Americas correct. It was so bad…that we were actually happy to have moved UP to tenth (we had been in last place) after the game two final, finishing in ninth overall with 64 points.

Since I’m an older gal, I really liked the audio clue which was a disco song!

Here’s a meme inspired by the movie Mystery Men:

Should I continue listing all of the wrong answers submitted by players during last nightโ€™s game? No? Good because I didn’t write ’em all down!

Here were the questions, some may be abbreviated:

Round One/Game One

1 Insects – A group of what type of insect is appropriately known as a scourge? Miss.

2 Reboots – What obstacle-course based game show originally aired on ABC from 2008-2014 before being rebooted in 2021 with John Cena, Nicole Byer and Camille Kostek servias co- hosts? Miss – bet that Chad M. the MTL host would know this!

3 Movie Quotes – What one-word exclamation is spoken five different times by the character Vizzini in the 1987 film The Princess Bride?

NERD POINT: What actor played Vizzini?

4 2024 News – In October, 2024, what company was fined $20 decillion by Russia for allegedly blocking pro- Kremlin propaganda? Miss.

Yeah, three of our wrong answers were read by Seth by this point!

Mystery Round One – Also a Song

The correct answer for each clue is also the title of a song included on Rolling Stone‘s list of the top 500 songs of all time.

M1 NBC superhero drama airing from 2006-2010 and used the tagline “Save the cheerleader, save the world.”

M2 Magazine for which Anna Wintour – the inspiration for Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada – serves as editor in chief?

M3 Team Name of the franchise that won the World Series in 1985 and 2015

M4 Word that fills in the blank in the title of an 1899 book by Sigmund Freud- The Interpretation of (blank)

Missed #3 – Felt so dumb when the answer was eventually revealed after about an hour (JK, JK)! Let me live that fantasy that we got it right!

Round Two

5 Soccer – Who was the goalkeeper for the United States women’s national soccer team who won a World Cup and two Olympic gold medals from 2000 to 2016?

Hint – She shares part of her name with a Star Wars character

if we felt like we were dumb for missing that mystery round question earlier, you’d better believe we felt pretty dumb here! Strange, I remembered reading that this soccer player was involved in a domestic violence dispute of some sort several years ago, but damn I couldn’t remember her name!

6 Clothing – Traditionally made from reindeer skin or seal skin and commonly worn by indigenous peoples in the Arctic, mukluks are what type of apparel? FB host clue.

7 Mountains – The Appenine Mountains are a roughly 870-mile long range located in what European country?

8 Writing – What collection of 85 articles and essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay were designed to promote the ratification of the United States Constitution?

Mystery Round Two – Current Events

Answer the questions about events that have taken place recently

M1 Three daughters of what civil rights leader filed a lawsuit against the CIA, FBI and the New York Police Department, asserting that they were aware of an assassination plot and failed to stop it?

Acting in Threes

M2 Four California residents were arrested and charged with insurance fraud after it was determined that they damaged their own vehicles while dressed in what kind of animal costume?

M3 What skier announced that she is training to return to competition at the age of 40 – 20 years after she won her first World Cup race?

M4 What satirical news organization won the auction to acquire InfoWars, with the intent of turning the site into a parody of Alex Jones’ conspiracy theories?

These were all guesses and we got ’em all! And go me for being able to name a female skier who isn’t my ski champion niece! ๐ŸŽฟ ๐Ÿ†

We were in tenth with 40 points going into the final playing under the name Never Tell Me the Odds. Great Han Solo quote, even if he isn’t actually related to Hope Solo! My Type on Paypah was in first with 49 points, ahead of Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender, 47 points and Wrong Answers Only with 46.

Final Category – Periodic Table

Spoiler – Poor Seth would nearly lose his voice reading off all of the wrong answers submitted for this question! Why? Here’s another spoiler- EVERY TEAM GOT IT WRONG! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

Since we don’t “always” fail on questions in this category, we decided to wager all 15 points.

Other than curium, which was named after Marie Curie and her husband, there is only one element on the periodic table that is named after a real life woman. Name EITHER the scientist OR the element, which has atomic number 109.

Warning, we moved to a different area for game two, the questions will be more abbreviated.

Round Three/Game Two

9 Poems – What color is referenced in the first line of Robert Frost’s poem The Road Not Taken? Miss, though our guess was close.

10 English – The expressions “cold as ice” and “I slept like a log” are examples of what figure of speech?

11 Band Names – We had this as audio clue but…I’m feeling generous, so I’ll convert it to a words question for all y’all! Hey, don’t everyone thank me at once!

What disco band, formed in 1972 in New York City, recorded the 1978 song Le Freak, which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1978? Hint, their name can describe something that is trendy or fashionable.

I had no idea that a certain famous music producer who worked with lots of different artists was in this band! ๐ŸŽถ ๐Ÿ•บ

12 TV Series – What TV series airing from 2005 to 2014 occasionally had scenes from the year 2030? Miss.

Mystery Round Three – Visual

OK, great! A picture round! This won’t be too bad! Will it? Oh wait… oh just slap me!

This round was doubly hard because even if you thought you might know the right teams, you’re screwed if you don’t also know the stadium name. Lemme think – Roger? No? Timothy? No? Yeah we put “no idea” for every one of these, though I could have put “Wrigley Field” for all four and have maybe a 25 percent chance of getting at least one right! Yes, we’ve done this in desperate moments in mystery rounds!

Round Four

13 Countries – Name one of the two largest countries in Asia by area that are landlocked. Name both for a nerd bonus.

14 Minerals – What hard crystallized mineral made of silicon and oxygen is the second most abundant mineral in the continental crust?

15 Vice Presidents – What US VP served just 82 days before ascending to the presidency? Miss.

16 Video Games – 1986, Konami, basketball video game named for infraction by offensive player. Miss.

Mystery Round Four

Here are some screenshots:

We got #2 correct. And I didn’t catch the answer for #1.

We were at the bottom of the barrel in terms of points with…23 points? Meh, I didn’t bother writing it down! In keeping with our whole “Who gives a f—” attitude, we decided to bet it all on the category of…

The Americas

Name two of the four most populous national capital cities in North or South America, all of which are more populous than Buenos Aires.

Got this right, but what a nail biter waiting while so many wrong capital city names were read off! Someone actually put Austin! Silly, Texas only THINKS it’s a nation! I wasn’t in the greatest spot to hear, but I’m gonna but $ that some teams put Rio for an answer (silly, that’s a Duran Duran song ๐Ÿ˜‰).

Best of luck to Seth if he continues to host in the new town to which he’s moving! What will become of Monday’s music bingo scene? ๐Ÿ˜”

Trivial pursuits may be light for us over the next couple of weeks because of work and other annoyances. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Nile Rodgers! You might not be as well known as the dearly departed Quincy Jones, but your mad music production skills might even lure me to a dance floor ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿ’ƒ #balletdropout
