Me and what remains of my trivia team have been on a bit of a break from competitive trivia over the past several months. A death in the family and a variety of other things (including the Detroit Lions making it to the championships 🦁 🏈) made it difficult for us to commit to weekly games. We made a valiant effort to play regularly on Sundays at the beginning of 2024, but alas, weekend games were not to be. With me working nearly every Sunday now, it is even more difficult.
We still managed to throw our hats in the ring for a My Trivia Live tournament in August, where we managed to finish eighth out of about 40 teams! I had to borrow a dear friend who plays with another team and even brought a MTL first timer aboard whom had previously played with a Sporcle League trivia team years ago.
Special thanks to the MTL host Stacy for helping to bring us out of “exile” (which was totally self imposed)! It’s been fun getting back into the saddle! Funny they asked a trivia question about a saddle part just last week 🐴
As of late, the My Trivia Live league has worked out better for us on the nights when we can actually make it out to games. The later 8 p.m. start time helps, and we don’t need to bring more than a couple of players to have a shot at a prize. Having two different nights as an option helps, too! Thursdays have been working for me better lately than Tuesdays.
I’ve been trying to get players to come out for a weekly Sporcle game at a competitive spot called the “Corner Brewery” near my home, but it hasn’t worked out. I don’t want to try playing here without at least five players. The average team size here is usually six players or more. While trivia is “fun,” to be sure, having at least a chance of winning occasionally is also fun! Not having a chance – ain’t so fun!
Our days of domination of this trivia spot are long behind us! We managed to win bar championships here a few times years ago, but had to give up the bar as a regular spot when our numbers started dwindling too much for us to compete there. We successfully found greener trivia pastures elsewhere, managing to dominate a few other local trivia spots, even winning money in a few regional tournaments – until Pandemic 2020 sucker punched the entire planet 🌎
Tonight my husband and I (and possibly someone else) will hit up a Sporcle virtual game. I’m very curious about the questions, even though we have not played the minimum games to be able to make a run at any local bars (boy does THAT feel strange)!
it is still up in the air as to whether we’ll be able to play in any end of season Sporcle or MTL games scheduled in December. The MTL spot we were playing canceled their weekly shows nearly as soon as they began, and if we do manage to get into a Sporcle Globe Game, we get last pick of spots and may not be able to get in. Hmmm are we willing to drive to Ohio? 🤔 😂
I’m not generally a gambling gal, but I’m betting everything on our chances here! 🎰
