Trivia Recap – Game # 828 – July 10, 2024 – Sporcle Events Game – Corner Brewery (Ypsilanti, MI)

We played our first game of the Sporcle Events season on a recent mild weather day. We hadn’t checked out the feisty Corner Brewery trivia scene for a spell, and since I had the day off, and had four total players available, well…why not? We know we’re way too outnumbered to make any noise when we play here, but it’s a favorite meeting spot, and a frequent haunt close to home.

The sunset was quite spectacular on this evening:

We got both final questions incorrect, didn’t win any prizes, finished 12th overall. But would you expect anything better from us at this bar?

Here were our questions:

Game One/Round One

1 Magazines – Although the border of Time magazine is usually red, it was what color for the April 28, 2008 cover? The headline for the week’s issue was “How to Win the War on Global Warming?” Easy way to start things.

2 TV Settings- The Tibbitt to Conwoyto Winter Road, the Dalton Highway and the Dempster Highway are among the main settings of what reality series? My written brainstorming insert was a profane take on the name…but we got it.

3 Rap Music – What rap group played their final public show in June 2009 at thr Bonaroo Musicand Arts Festival? FB clue.

4 Math – I’m gonna use a picture for this one since I don’t know how to find the pi symbol on my tablet keyboard:

Got all of these.

Mystery Round One

Shakespeare Title Words

Name the word that is found in the title of a Shakespeare play based on the clue.

M1 Last name of the singer who released the songs “Carnival” and “Wonder” in 1995

M2 A small mammal related to moles

M3 The 23rd most populous city in Canada as of 2021

M4 A state of agitation or fuss, especially about something unimportant

Got all of these, but almost forgot about “South Detroit,” lol..

Round Two

5 Cars – What automotive division produced the HHR vehicle model from 2005-2011?

6 National Parks – Wind Cave National Park and Badlands National Park are both located in which US state?

Nerd Point: Which of the 63 US national parks was established most recently, in December, 2020?

Missed the bonus.

7 Ingredients- First created by a chef to King George IV, what condiment brand counts tomato puree, raising paste, crushed orange puree, vinegar and salt among its ingredients?

Half of us wanted to say one sauce, two of us wanted to say a different sauce. Two of us were right in our guess, but the wrong guesses got their way.

8 Architecture – Art Deco Architecture originated in what European country in the years before World War I?

Mystery Round Two

This was NOT our mystery round! We only got #1 correct. We heard a team cheer really loudly at getting #2 correct. Sigh…I guess our team just couldn’t handle the truth! And if someone told us the correct answer, we’d have to kill them. Classic Jack Nicholson overacting at its best! If I want to see him overact, I’ll take him in this role, thank you:

So much more interesting than a marines uniform!

We were in third with 45 points – behind four teams, two tied with 46 points, and two tied with 47 points (it was the third highest score so yes we were technically in third, so there)!

24 Hour Brunch were in first with 47 points, tied with Smells Like Poutine Spirit.

Hey, when we play at a place as tough as this place, I like to celebrate ANY little triumphs that we can!

And since we won’t (SPOILER) get the upcoming or second final questions correct, this concludes our high point of the game! Mama mia…

Final Category Game One – US Cities

What major US city, incorporated in 1851, has ten times the population of its namesake, which is around 2,500 miles away?

Damn it…a series my husband and I are watching now is set in this city! Grimm, for inquiring minds.

Game Two/Round Three

9 Pilots – What pilot was ranked second on Time magazine’s list of the “Top 100 Most Influential Heroes of 2009,” due to his landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River?

10 Buildings – What building is home to the United States Department of Defense?

Nerd Point: In what decade was this building opened for use? Got the points and the bonus.

11 Countries – What country, the 18th most populous in the world, is the most populous country with a four-letter name?

12 Novels – The title what 1850 novel completes the following quote from that book – “She turned her eyes downward at BLANK BLANK BLANK (three words), and even touched it with her finger, to assure herself that the infant and the shame were real?

Mystery Round Three

Beyoncé Quickfire

Name four of the five singles by Beyoncé as a lead artist that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the decade of the 2000s.

Dave really, really tried to get this. But we only got one answer correct.

Round Four

13 Nicknames – What former MLB player is nicknamed The Big Hurt? Miss.

14 1960s Movies – Audio clue of clip of 1964 James Bond film, he’d to identify the state in which the movie quote’s events were set.

15 TV Characters – Becky Jackson, Jacob Ben Israel and Ken Taraska are supporting Characters on what Fox TV series that aired from 2009 to 2015? Miss.Though we did pick a series that ran nearly as long and debuted the same year 😦

16 Letters – Of the 26 letters in the modern English alphabet, which one was added most recently- C, J, P or X?

Miss. Not our game!

Mystery Round Four – Crossword

Answer based on the crossword-style clue given.

M1 (6 letters) – The fabric part of a parachute that catches the air

M2 (9 letters) – Animated TV series that follows Scrooge and his three grand nephews

M3 (7 letters) Cocktail traditionally made with cognac, orange liqueur and lemon juice

M4 (6 letters) Swiss corporation known for its chocolate and mineral water brands, among other products

Missed #1.

We were in 13th out of 16 teams going into the final with 41 points. Most teams ahead of us were separated by just one point, Hotter Than Mordor was in first with 52 points.

We did thr opposite of ballsy with our final question wager in the category of…

Theater Records

Name one of the two longest running Broadway productions – both with more than 5,000 shows – that never won a Tony Award.

One has the distinction of being the longest running revues on Broadway, while the other is Broadway’s longest running jukebox musical.

You KNOW we’re screwed when it’s a theater question and someone on the team asks, “What’s a jukebox musical?”

I tried to answer…”I guess it’s a musical but with popular songs or something?”

We actually did think one such jukebox musical that was correct. Wouldn’t have put us in the prize zone had we wagered. I watched the movie version of the part two recently at my mother-in-law’s house and it was…awful! I did think it was cool that Benny and Bjorn both had cameos though!

Did I just give a hint to to one of the correct answers? Yes, maybe I did send out an “S.O.S” to you all who like to say “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” some trivia answers (you know who you are)!

Unsure when we’ll do our next Sporcle Events adventure. We’re not making any solid trivia plans this summer, and have not set our sights on any one “regular” trivia spot. We’ll play where we want – when we can!

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Agnetha and Anna-Frid (Frida)!
