Michiganders Not Much Different From Minnesotans! Uh Yeah, I’ve Been Watching “Fargo…”

I know that I’m a bit late to the watch party, but yah, I’ve started watching the FX series Fargo on Hulu.

It’s almost scary how easy it is for someone like me – who has lived in Michigan, U.S.A. my entire life (pictured above in my best Fargo getup)- to be able to speak “Minnesotan!” We are only two states away, after all – and we have “Yoopers” in our state’s Upper Peninsula, who are fluent in Minnesotan! Dig if you will, the picture (please note that Minnesotan Prince wrote those words, may he RIP) :

My niece’s soccer game about 10 years ago or so in Houghton, MI. Nice August afternoon, sun brightly shining. Houghton is deeply north in Michigan’s U.P. , for those of you not in the know. Not too far from Minnesota or Wisconsin. Anyway, my husband and I were sitting in the bleachers and there were a couple of Yooper women sitting behind us and chatting in pure Yooper talk. Lots of “Oh boys,” “Yah,” “Pasties,” “Whitefish,” and “Wow aren’t those pesky black flies bad by the big lake?” Maybe they also said “Uffta” at some point too! But that might be a Minnesota thang! !

Yeah, it was a little annoying! Now that we’ve been watching Fargo, we can see that they’re not that much different from us!

I recently read that when they filmed the movie Fargo the cast had to read a book called How to Talk Minnesotan. Yes that is a real book.

I told one of my co-workers about this, whom I know is a Minnesota native. I told her that she could be an on-set dialogue coach for cast members! All they’d need to do is give her their lines, have her record them and listen to the playback. Hell, that’s what Bobby DeNiro did when he wanted to learn his Italian lines in Godfather Part 2. He went to Sicily and asked a native to read his lines into a tape recorder.

Australian actress Margot Robbie learned her Harley Quinn accent by listening to actress Lorraine Bracco in Goodfellas!

Imitation the sincerest form of flattery?
