Trivia Recap – Game # 791 – September 24, 2023 – YpsiAlehouse – (Ypsilanti, MI)

Any Simpsons fans out there who can spot this reference? 🀣 Maybe it ties in with a game question!

Our “Three Amigos” trivia threesome met for a Sunday afternoon trivia bout at the YpsiAlehouse. No prizes, but boy were the games close! we lost out on a three way tiebreaker for second place in game 1. I do like a trivia scene that’s not only competitive, but one where winning isn’t completely out of reach, especially for a smaller team like ours.

Here were our questions, most are not abbreviated!

Game One

Round One

1Toys – What toy and media franchise, originally introduced by Hasbro in the ’80s, consists of mini horses that are meant be groomed, collected and used in storytelling?

2 Capital Cities – What island country is home to the most northernmost city that serves as a capital of a sovereign nation? NERD point, which island country is home to the most southernmost city to serve as capital of a sovereign nation?

3 Logos – Which NFL team has a helmet logo that depicts a bull with a star for an eye?

4 Food – What Greek food – with a name that translates to “spinach pie,” is a form of borek pastry, made of thin flaky dough, and is traditionally filled with spinach and feta? Thankfully correct spelling wasn’t required!

Mystery Round One –

Got all of these correct.

Round Two –

5 Novel Animals – What mammal is described in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy as the second most intelligent species on Earth, having tried to send messages to humans forewarning the destruction of the world, including their final message, “So long, and thanks for all the fish?” Douglas Adams fan Mike was all over this! Who knows which animals were deemed the smartest in the book?

6 1980s Movies – In what 1987 film do actresses Anne Archer and Glenn Close play romantic rivals of Michael Douglas’ character?

7 Firsts – In 1990, 20 years after she earned her degree in medicine, Antonia Novello became the first woman and the first Hispanic person to hold what U.S. government position? FB clue.

8 Constellations – According to the International Astronomical Union, the constellation Sagittarius is depicted as aiming its arrow at the heart of what other constellation, which is represented as Maui’s fishhook in Hawaiian tradition? Miss…

Mystery Round Two –

Got two of these correct.

We were tied with two other teams in second with 48 points. The top team was only ahead of us by two points.

We decided that because our teammate Brad is a science guy, we’d bet all of our points on the category of biology.

Final Question – Which phase of cell mitosis comes fourth chronologically and first alphabetically?

And as quickly as a cell divides – wait, is that a quick thing, or is it like a caterpillar changing into a butterfly? I digress, anyway, we were put into a (you guessed it) three way (giggle) tiebreaker. Some of you may know that I liketiebreakers. Do I get off on them? Uh…πŸ€”πŸ˜ These trivia recaps are intended to be suitable for PG 13 audiences, so I’m not saying anything else!

Alas, we didn’t win this tiebreaker (can’t win ’em all). ☹️

Game Two

Round Three –

9 US Cities – Cheyenne is the capital and most populous city in what US state?

10 Cop Shows – What 1970s police drama series ran for four seasons and featured two title characters played by Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul? Did you know Glaser directed the 1987 film The Running Man? I really like the movie! Also, Paula Abdul was a choreographer for the film!

11 Big Animals – The world’s largest amphibian is a member of what order of animals? We were worried we’d need the actual scientific order name, but we did not.

12 Names – Since the Social Security Administration began keeping track in the 1880s, of the top 20 most popular American boys’ names in any decade, only two begin with the letter “K.” Name one of those names, both for a bonus point.

Mystery Round Three – Polygons

Give the number of sides for each of the following polygons: nonagon, icosagon, tetradecagon, megagon.

We got three of these correct. And we determined that Godzilla needs to fight Megagon!

Round Four –

13 Instruments – Audio q, had to ID the musical instrument being played. I thought it was too easy, I was hoping to have tell the difference between an English horn and oboe, having to tell the difference between a viola and violin, a bassoon and contrabassoon.nope it was just a flute ( bummer). #confessionsofabandnerd

14 Royalty – What is the most common first name that has been used by queens of England and /or Scotland, having been used by three, most recently from 1689-1694?

15 Words – What are the only two acceptable 7-letter Scrabble words ending in shion. Name both. We felt so dumb not knowing both. Makes me want to plop on a seven letter word ending in shion…

16 Voices – What actor provides the voice of Woody in the Toy Story franchise?

Mystery Round Four –

Missed #1 (nice work Brad)!

We were in fifth going into the final with 45 points. We wagered just five points on the category of 20th Century Literature in the hopes that…yeah I’m not sure what I was thinking! πŸ˜„

Final Question – “The Chain,” “The Man who Belonged on Earth,” ” The Moratorium on Brains,” and “The Egoist” are titles of chapters in what book published in the 20th Century?”

We incorrectly guessed Stranger in a Strange Land. At least we only lost five points!

Unsure when we can do our next live game. Not likely until October, we’ll see! As always, Go Pods, and stayclassy, Zaphod Beeblebrox! Don’t you wish you were as smart as a white lab mouse?🐁
