Trivia Recap – Game # 785 – August 13, 2023 – Live Game – YpsiAlehouse – Ypsilanti, MI

Not an awful start to the new Sporcle Live Pub trivia season for us! We won a second place/$10 gift card in game one, though we blew it on the doggie names final question in game two. Does this mean that our game “went to the dogs?” Sure, why not?

Not everyone can be a “weiner,” can they? As long as you’re not as sad as this doggo when you flub a final question!!! Is this enough corny joking for ya?

I’ll get right on to thequestions, which may be heavily abbreviated, and sorry no answers (I’m not using my laptop to type these). Just look up the answers like you’re cheating in a trivia game! 😁

Game One

Round One

1 Word Origins – What 10 letter Greek derived word means “writing with light?”

2 Brands – Activia is a subsidiary of what company?

3 Books – What 1959 William Burroughs novel’s title was described by him as such – “That frozen moment when everyone sees what’s at the end end of the fork?” I mistakenly was thinking of a Kafka story instead – my bad for confusing two authors who both wrote about some weird shit! My teammates initially confused him with Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burroughs, though eventually my husband came up with the right guess, to which I said, “Yes, that’s it, and that guy from Robocop was in the movie!” Too bad we’d already put in a wrong guess 😦

Here’s an image from that movie:

Caption contest? Drugs are bad, m’kay? My wife doesn’t understand me? Of all the gin joints, you had to walk into mine? My place or yours?

4 Olympics – What Belgian city was the first to host the Olympics after WWI?

Mystery Round One

Put the following list of Grammy “losers” (nominated but didn’t win) in order from having the most to least Billboard charting hit songs – Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons.

We got four points out of this round.

Round Two

5 Marriages – From 2009 to 2019, Josh Duhamel was married to what singer?

6 World Leaders – Name one of the two leaders of the Soviet Union who served during the decade of the 1960s. For a bonus point, name both. Got both.

7 Trees – What is the name for the miniature potted decorative tree popular in Japanese culture?

8 Candy – What is the name for the Hershey’s Kiss variety with chocolate and white creme intertwined?

Mystery Round Two – Visual

We got all of these.

We were in third going into the final with 46 points. We bet it all on the category of Classical Music, which I insisted upon doing, because, I’m a former band nerd. Which is a lie, of course! There is no such thing as a “former band nerd” any more than there is such a thing as a former athlete, former boy/girl scout, or a former clown. Some things just stay with ya for life!

Final Question: Put the following classical composers in order according to which one was born first – Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, Ludwig Von Beethoven.

Got them all, but so did the team 24 Hour Brunch. Second place, prize money, yay!
Game Two/Round Three

9 Toys – In 1953, the Lesney Products company introduced a brand of small replica vehicles that received its name because they were sold in boxes similar to what type of package?

10 Disney – What was the name of the skunk in the Disney animated film Bambi?

11 Audio Clue – had to ID singer in the clip, we missed it (sorry too lazy to try to recreate this, but the singer was Smokey Robinson, and we missed it).

12 Solar System – What type of eclipse occurs when the earth is directly between the sun and the moon?

Mystery Round Three – Book Titles

Given the publication year, author and one of the character names, ID the book titles.

M1 – 1830, Victor Hugo, Esmeralda

M2 – 1905, Sir Piercy Blackney, Baroness Emma Orczy

M3 – 1844, Alexandre Dumas, Edmond Dantes

M4 – 1959, Charles Dickens, Charles Darney

Got all of these.

Round Four

13 Airports – Which Southeastern capital city is served by an airport with the three digit designation BNA because of its former name – Berry Field? Miss.

14 Winners – In 1983, who became the first African American woman to win the title of Miss America?

15 – Streaks – Within two, in what year did Cal Ripken Jr. end his 2,632 game consecutive games played streak? Brad and I teamed up on this by playing “hot and cold.” I threw out guesses of years, he would say whether they were hot or cold guesses. Got this within two, yay!
16 Famous Names – What showman, known for founding a well-known circus, also served as mayor of Bridgeport, CT from 1875 to 1876?

Mystery Round Four – Add ‘Em Up

All of the following clues will have numbers as answers and will add up to 22.

M1 Second magic number in nuclear physics

M2 – Number of months ending in the letter Ye

M3 – Number of Stanley Cup championships won by the LA Kings

M4 – Number of different candy coated shells in a standard bag of M&Ms

Got all of these, and it was all Mike and Brad doing the work (I love you guys)!

We were in fourth going into the final with 47 points. We bet it all on the category of pet names.

Final Question: According to rover dot com, six of the ten most popular female names for dogs begin with the letters L or B. Name four of those names.

We talked ourselves out of one that was correct and only got three right. Classic ‘Pods maneuver!

Oh well, we’ll be back at it in a week. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, the Count of Monte Cristo! And the people who eat the sandwiches named for you!
