(REVISED) Trivia Recap – Game # 775 – June 25, 2023 – YpsiAlehouse (Ypsilanti, MI)

Editor’s note: This recap has been revised from the original version. So hopefully it’s not f—ed up now! At this time in my life, I was under a great deal of stress brought on by my husband very recently losing his job of 20 years. For inquiring minds, he has since found some other employment, though it may only be a stopgap measure (any money coming in is better than none).

It was almost by accident that we ended up at a trivia spot of auld Sunday night. We were just there to play a board game, but then since one of our trivia cohorts said he was going to be there around trivia time, we shrugged our shoulders and said “Why not?”

If nothing else but a decent selection of beer, seltzers (hard and soft) and ciders, the YpsiAlehouse is always a great people watching spot! It was even more so of a people watching spot back when the old Deja Vu was still open. Sadly, a combination of a fire – and the pandemic – caused operations at this local “gentlemen’s club” to close its doors. I have not heard anything about whether – or when – it will reopen.

As for our first live game since early May, we didn’t do so great! Though we were in second going into final question two. We just couldn’t remember the name of a particular toy brand they were asking about in the final question! And aw shucks on that, since we just watched a whole season of a History Channel documentary series about toys! Guess we’ll just have to play with our old Hot Wheels cars and Star Wars figures to console ourselves! Here’s a snap of some of my husband’s old Star Wars toys below:

Round One (all questions abbreviated)lFinal

1 Measures – What basic unit of mass in the metric system is equal to roughly 2.2 pounds?

2 Magazines – What color is the rectangular border on the cover of National Geographic magazines?

3 1990s Movies – What film falls last alphabetically for Tom Hanks in a credited role in the 1990s? Miss.

4 Holiday Music – Since 2000, what artist had #1 hits on the Billboard adult contemporary charts with O Holy Night, Believe, I’ll Be Home for Christmas and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas? I was talked out of my correct guess. For shame! Always default to a retail employee when it comes to questions about holiday music! Except when they don’t know the answer 🙂

Mystery Round One – Greek Letters

We got all of these correct (I just let my two nerdy trivia pardners take care of this while I did my nails, LOL).

Round Two

5 NFL Teams – Since 1933, members of the Rooney family have been the majority owners of which NFL franchise? Yay Brad!

6 Organizations – What media monitoring organization was rounded in 1985 in protest of defamatory AIDS coverage by the New York Post? I completely misread the FB clue offered before the game, so this miss was totally my bad.

7 Painters – What painter’s unfinished work was Man at the Crossroads, which was destroyed in 1934 because it contained an image of Vladimir Lenin? Miss.

8 Chefs – Audio clue of a British chef known for his cantankerousness and gravity defying hair.

Mystery Round Two – PAL people

All answers will contain the letters PAL in order.

M1 – Spellcaster and holy knight in fifth edition Dungeons and Dragons

M2 – Teenage girl central to plot of the TV series Twin Peaks

M3 – “I love the smell of (BLANK) in the morning,” from the 1979 film Apocalypse Now, fill in that blank

M4 – Onetime residence of Imperial Russian Romanov family in St. Petersburg, now home to Hermitage Museum

Final Category Game One – Podcasts

We had zero confidence in this category, so we wagered accordingly.

Podcasts – The rewatch podcast partially titled “Fake Doctors” is hosted by what two actors who starred together on the series that is the subject of the podcast?

We would not have known both, though we correctly guessed one of the actors.

Game Two

9 Alloys – What metal is always used in the making of bronze and brass?

10 TV Networks – What was the first Spanish language network in the U.S. which launched in 1962 – the first to be broadcast entirely in Spanish? Miss.

11 Government – The IRS is a bureau of what U.S. cabinet department?

12 World Capitals – In what cardinal direction would a person have to travel from Berlin to Prague?

Mystery Two

This Day in History

Answer the questions about June 25 throughout history. I took a pic because I couldn’t be f—ed to write ’em down…

We missed 3 and 4.

Game Two/Round Three

13 #1 Hits – What song by Michael Sembello reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983? Nerd point, in what movie’s soundtrack did this appear?

14 Candy – What Hershey’s caramel candy got its name because the manufacturing process failed to make the perfectly round candies it intended?

15 Airports – When three-letter airport designations became standard in the mid 1940s, what letter was added to airports with two-letter identifiers to make them comply with this standard?

16 I have no idea why this question is missing…sorry.

Mystery Four – Sofia Coppola Movies

Identify which four of the following seven movies were directed by Sofia Coppola.

Lost in Translation

Marie Antoinette

Nomadland

The Beguiled

The Bling Ring

Lady Bird

Prosing Young Woman

We got six points of out this. Not bad considering we only knew two for sure!

We were in second going into the final.

Toys – this will be very abbreviated, I didn’t write this down!

What 1980s toy brand was known for being pitched by fast talker John Mischitta?

We may occasionally play here, as long as we ONLY come for trivia and nothing afterwards (long story). Clearly we didn’t understand the rules of open mic night!

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy…us! It’s been a rough couple of weeks.
