We’ve gone back to being a virtual trivia team for now. Which means we are just figments of your imagination, bwa ha ha!
Interesting how far we’ve gotten in virtual reality technology, isn’t it? Did anyone else happen to see the 1992 film Lawnmower Man? Honestly, I barely remember much about the movie, other than Jeff Fahey was in it, and that it was a Stephen King joint. I was reminded of this movie while watching an episode of the 1990s reboot of “The Outer Limits,” which features (drum roll) virtual reality! This guy works at a tech company and puts on a virtual reality helmet/goggles and has the ability to see into the future, which includes a vision of his death. And then today, I watched an episode of Rick and Morty called Lawnmower Dog, which is about the family dog becoming super intelligent and doing…well, Lawnmower Man stuff.
When the store in which I work got virtual reality headsets in for a holiday season, the first thing that came to my mind was, “People will just use these to watch porn.”
And speaking of dogs…
Round One
1 Proverbs According to a common proverb, “if you lie down with dogs, you will get up with” what other animal?
2 Agencies The FAA, FHWA, and FRA are among the agencies that are part of what U.S. Cabinet-level department?
3 Book to Movie What 2013 film directed by Baz Luhrmann is based on a novel of the same name that was released in 1925? I watched a video on YouTube recently called “(Title of this book) in 15 Minutes.” It summarized the story quite nicely!
4 Drinks What eight-letter French word refers to an alcoholic drink served before a meal, such as vermouth or champagne? “Bud Light” wasn’t the answer!
Mystery Round One
Name the song with “new” in the title based on the artist, year of release, and the given lyrics.
M1. Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, 1992—“I can show you the world; Shining, shimmering, splendid”
M2. Dua Lipa, 2017—“One: Don’t pick up the phone; You know he’s only callin’ ’cause he’s drunk and alone”
M3. Everclear, 1997—“I hate those people who love to tell you; Money is the root of all that kills; They have never been poor”
M4. Billy Joel, 1976—“Some folks like to get away; Take a holiday from the neighborhood; Hop a flight to Miami Beach”
I actually tried playing #4 on the piano recently. Billy Joel, I ain’t! We missed #2.
Round Two
5 TV Names The five main characters on the TV series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia collectively have three last names. Name two of those three last names.
NERD POINT: Name all three.
Nope, nope, nope…
6 Presidents Which U.S. president ran a reelection campaign that included a TV commercial that opened with the line “It’s morning again in America”?
7 Tennis What tennis player, born in Yugoslavia in 1973, won eight major singles titles while she was still a teenager? I had no idea she was a Slav, I thought she was German.
8 Teeth In humans, the third molars are more commonly known by what colloquial term? My husband’s trivia about wisdom teeth are that he has tiny unerupted wisdom teeth. My bit of trivia is a bit more disgusting…I actually have the wisdom teeth extracted in 1997! I mean, come on – what am I supposed to do – throw away my body parts? 🙂
Mystery Round Two
This is going to be a little fun!
If the state capital is in the correct location on the map, answer with the name of the city. If it is NOT in the correct location, answer “NO.”
We got all of these correct. We were in fifth going into the final with 49 points. We decided to wager just half (8 points) on the category of TV programming.
Final Question:
The Disney Afternoon programming block debuted in 1990, originally featuring Adventures of the Gummi Bears and three other animated series. Name two of the other three shows that originally completed the two-hour block.
Yeah, of course we knew this! Wagering full points would not have moved us up at all.
As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, whomever Dua Lipa was singing about in that mystery round question!
