Now that weather is getting warmer and work/life just keeps getting busier, my husband and I are not playing as many trivia games as we used to! We’re still unsure whether we’ll find a decent local live trivia spot to play, but in the meantime, the virtual games will do!
We flunked a final question about cocktails, which kind of made us hang our heads in shame for a couple of reasons! One, we like cocktails, and two, there is a dive bar located very close to us that shares its name with the cocktail they asked about in the final question! Have we ever visited it? No! Have we ever had the cocktail they asked about? Also no! Will we ever try the cocktail they asked about? Uh, probably not! When they revealed the answers to the final question, I automatically thought of this scene from the movie Airplane!:
But I’ll explain a bit more about that later (it’s not important right now)!
Round One
1 English – The part of a car known as a “boot” in British English is most commonly known by what term in the United States? My husband claimed that he learned the answer by watching episodes of “Doctor Who,” i claimed to know the answer by watching episodes of “The Young Ones.” We also knew a British couple who made us a bit more hip to British slang, so… Did you know they also call flashlights “torches?”
2 Pride Month – At many colleges and universities that are not in session in June, LGBTQ+ pride is instead celebrated during which other calendar month? He said one month, I said a different one, his was correct, whew!
3 Presidents – Who was sworn into office as U.S. president the last time that the oath of office was NOT administered by John Roberts?
NERD POINT: Name either person who administered the oath of office to Lyndon B. Johnson.
Missed the nerd bonus.
4 Ratings – In the United States, there are six categories in the TV content rating system. Which category that includes a number comes between TV-PG and TV-MA?
Mystery Round One – Visual
Missed #3, which is kind of a shame, since that image is used in so many memes!
Round Two
5 Art – The 1942 painting Nighthawks by Edward Hopper depicts several individuals in what type of establishment?
6 Outer Space – What type of celestial body gets its name from the Greek word meaning “wander?”
7 MASCOTS – What cereal producing company known for its monsters like Count Chocula and Franken Berry will be releasing a caramel apple flavored cereal with a character named Carmella Creeper, a zombie DJ this Halloween?
8 Grammy Awards – In 1997, what country and pop artist became the youngest person to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, doing so at the age of 14? Can you blame us for being confused about questions involving blonde white female singers from this time? How many of them were shoulder-length blondes? Honestly if you put this person in a lineup with Jewel and Joan Osborne, I wouldn’t be able to tell them apart! Gwen Stefani on the other hand, she had more of a “punk” look to her!
Mystery Round Two
Answer the questions about people with the last name Tucker.
M1. What 1997 sci-fi film stars Chris Tucker in the role of Ruby Rhod?
M2. In September 2021, Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker set the NFL record for the longest field goal made. Within one yard, how long was this field goal?
M3. In 1972, country singer Tanya Tucker had her first hit with what song that was later covered by Helen Reddy?
M4. Tom Tucker is a newscaster on what animated series?
Missed two of these. We were in sixth going into the final.
Final Question – Cocktails
As specified by the International Bartenders Association, what are the two primary ingredients—one a liquor and one a liqueur derived from that same liquor—in a rusty nail cocktail?
So in the movie Airplane! Ted (played by Robert Hays) says in a flashback scene that he had served in “the war” in (the liqueur name in the final question) off of the Ivory Coast. If that’s all I know about that liqueur, it’s no surprise that we missed the question!
The top two teams had to answer this tiebreaker – In what year was Arby’s founded?
As always, Go Pods and stay classy, Ethel Merman!
