Fact Du Jour – September 7, 2019 – Tasmania – Former Penal Colony

The Australian state of Tasmania, formerly called Van Diemen’s Land, was the former site of the Port Arthur prison facility, which is an open-air museum today.  It operated as a prison from 1833 to 1853. When convicts were doing their time here (some of the most hardened criminals the U.K. had to offer), they were not allowed to look at – or talk to – each other – and were required to wear hoods while walking among other prisoners. Not surprisingly, many convicts suffered mental illness.
