Nearly sixty years before the release of the 1975 movie Jaws, a real-life Jaws story was unfolding on the Jersey shore. Five swimmers were attacked between the days of July 1 and July 12, 1916 with only one of them surviving. The attacks got so much attention that even President Woodrow Wilson and his cabinet got involved – with the U.S. Coast Guard ultimately being mobilized and patrolling the shore in motorboats. This has been described as the largest scale animal hunt in U.S. history, with hundreds of sharks being captured.
