A Writing Challenge – Or Sincerest Form of Flattery?

I’ve been working on my “own” version of Billy Joel’s song We Didn’t Start the Fire! You can call it a “Gen X” version if you like – with events from 1972 to 2012 being the focus.

Here’s a taste (see if you can spot the years):

Naked Gun, Ollie North, Bloom County, gas attack…
Batman, Tiananmen Square, Ted Bundy gets the zap…

This is DEFINITELY a work in progress! I’m doing my best to “mirror” his original song in terms of rhythm, etc. – but I ain’t no songwriter! Well, I’ve informally “composed” some tunes before but I’m no Tim Rice… This means I’m not much of a “lyricist.” It’s a different type of writing altogether!

Spoiler? The song ends with Whitney Houston’s death in a bathtub (which occurred on my 40th birthday).

I may end up tweaking the song so much that I won’t even bother posting it. If nothing else, though, it was a good excuse to take a “snapshot” view at the first 40 years of my life!
