Fact Du Jour – August 9, 2019 – Michigan’s Oldest Coney Dog Joint

Have you ever had a “Coney Dog?” It’s definitely an American tradition – and is basically a hot dog, served on a bun with some kind of “chili” sauce (usually meat sauce without beans). But in the Midwestern state of Michigan, each Coney Dog has their own regional variations! Flint Coney Dog chili sauce must be made of beef hearts and the dogs MUST be Koegel brand (a big meat company in the greater Flint area). Angelo’s in Flint is THE place to go for Coney Dogs if you’re into this kind of food! In Jackson, beef hearts are optional in the sauce.

The oldest continually operating “Coney” joint in Michigan is in Kalamazoo, and is called Coney Island Kalamazoo…

What are the Coney Dogs like in your ‘hood? My favorite way to “take” a hot dog (no dirty jokes please) is a Koegel’s chicken dog with brown mustard and maybe some finely chopped cucumbers/peppers. Anything goes! I just don’t care for the greasy meat sauce. My husband said he liked his Coney dogs with JUST the meat sauce and NO hot dog!
