Fact Du Jour – July 5, 2019 – Agacher Strip War (AKA “Christmas War”)

The African country of Burkina Faso is pictured above, the red strip is a portion of its border with Mali. The two countries were embroiled in a conflict over this 100-mile strip of land, with both countries thinking the natural resources found in this “disputed” land would help their dire circumstances. This “dispute” occurred between 1974 and 1985, and the International Court of Justice split the 1,150 square mile parcel of land almost equally between the two countries in 1986. This has also been referred to as the “Christmas War,” not to be confused with the “War on Christmas” that some people like to whine about over the holidays…
