Something Bugging Me About Revenge of the Nerds…

Watching Revenge of the Nerds. By today’s strict political correctness standards, it simply…does’t measure up. At all. I think we can all agree on that! Everyone is fair game for ridicule – Asians, gay men, ugly girls and of course…nerds. Jocks are also ridiculed – in their own way.

Then of course there’s the “rape scene,” which occurs at the Greek carnival – where nerd Lewis – while wearing a Darth Vader mask – rapes the “pretty girl” – Betty Childs. Yes, there are tons of “grey areas” in terms of consent (she didn’t exactly protest or try to push him off – nor did she exactly… consent to sex with Lewis as Lewis – since she “thought” she was being plowed by her boyfriend, Stan). But I don’t want to get into the “weeds” with any of this! Let’s just say it was rape…

The rape scene – or the overt stereotyping – isn’t what bothers me the most about this movie. And I still can’t believe – after the dozens and dozens of times I’ve seen this movie – that it’s only bugging me now.

So what’s bugging me? The fact that Lewis ditches the Omegu Mu girl he met at their party. She seemed to be a good match – she said robots were “sexy,” she was obviously into the same “nerdy” stuff as Lewis, and we can only presume she was a freak in the sack. Or was that why he ditched her? We can only speculate.

I don’t think her character was named in the credits for this movie. Only by stumbling upon a “fan” site did I learn that her name could be “Diane.”

Yet at the end of it all – Lewis ends up with the “pretty girl” he sexually assaulted – not the nerdy girl who said “Let’s go to your bedroom” –  with whom he seemed to connect so well (in more ways than one).

Maybe he ultimately rejected her because she was taller than him! I get it now…I can certainly relate to THAT!

Back to the movie…
