Borrowing a Flannel Shirt From My Dad? Boy Does THAT Take Me Back!

I went to my folks’ house today with the specific plan to borrow one of my dad’s flannel shirts. I haven’t really been a “plaid flannel shirt” kind of gal since the early ’90s, when the “grunge” look was hip, and I wanted to put together a ’90s outfit for a ’90s music theme night on Sunday. Here’s a “wayback machine” entry – a  photo of me in one of my favorite flannel shirts from 1993 (or 1994) – this shirt had a ZIPPER! And I bought it from the now defunct Montgomery Ward – at Flint’s Genesee Valley Mall.

How could I not love a fashion craze like this? Me at age 21 (or 22) at Fisherman’s Island State Park – Charlevoix, MI. I no longer have the flannel shirt, but I still have the Depeche Mode tank – and wear it!

When I talked to my dad on the phone earlier, my only request was that the shirt be something in the “blue/green” family and NOT red (red just isn’t my color unless it’s a very dark red). Bright reds wash me out. He was happy to oblige, and is lending me this shirt to wear on Sunday:

I attended the Lollapalooza Music Festival at Pine Knob in Clarkston, MI in 1991. This venue is now called “DTE Energy Music Theater (but will always be “Pine Knob” to me). This was the first year the festival occurred. What a wild time that was! People set fires on the lawn, moshing galore…

This isn’t the first time I’ve “borrowed” an article of clothing from my dad! I kind of “co-opted” one of his flannel shirts when I was in college – it was a blue/white number – until I washed it with a dark red thermal shirt – which turned it into a blue/pink shirt. Bonus! I now had a  “girly” flannel shirt! I absolutely LOVED that shirt! It was chamois, so it was nice and soft. It was no longer in his regular rotation, so he didn’t care that his old shirt was the victim of a “laundry accident!”

Chaos ensues when Bart’s red baseball cap gets thrown in with the “whites” load.

I haven’t figured out what the “lower half” of my outfit will be. I don’t have any true “tapered leg” jeans, so I’ll have to be a bit creative! I was fond of the shorts/tights combo in the early 1990s, but ATM I don’t have any tights in my drawer that are not…purple (I try to save those for trivia tournaments). Black leggings with shorts may have to stand in for tights (and will be a little warmer on a polar vortex day). I’ll have to scrounge a bit to see what I can put together! Just like I did when I was in college! Hmmm, this shirt I’m picking up off the floor isn’t too wrinkly- and doesn’t smell like bar smoke! #winning
