Today will be my trivia team’s sixteenth Sporcle Live “finals,” or “league championship” in current parlance. I am not expecting too much out of my team today, as there will be plenty of great competition at Ashley’s Westland. I expect my team to be playing more of a “prey” role than “predator,” and will likely provide plenty of meat for other teams to chew on (clearly I watch WAY too many nature documentaries).

I did not even expect to qualify for the league championship this season, it was by mere serendipity that my team managed to do so (by playing the required number of games at Tower Inn Cafe, a new trivia spot and being the only qualified team at the end). In a weird twist of irony, my team also did not attempt to qualify for the MTL finals this season, though had we tried…we would have had to bow out of finals on Dec. 15 because of a family event involving a sacred Native American artifact (I honestly could not make this up – it’s completely true). Though we WILL be attempting to qualify in MTL this season!

Because I’m nothing if not a slightly superstitious beast…today I am wearing at least one component from each of the past three times my team has won money in trivia contests (outside of regular “league” games): I’m wearing the black tank top I wore when we won the top prize at at MTL tourney in July, 2017; the black hoodie I wore in April, 2018 when we won the fourth place prize in the Sporcle Live League Championship at 59 West and lastly, I’m wearing the shoes I wore when we won $100/first place in the ’80s movies theme night in July, 2018. I know none of this will do a damned bit of good, but it still makes me feel like I’m doing something… meaningful!
